Apple's Siri-Based Smart Speaker Has 'Over 50% Chance' of Debuting at WWDC in June

Yeah no. Until Apple gets rid of its asinine privacy policy and stops neutering Siri then maybe this will be useful for more than just "Set a reminder" commands.

I'll take an Echo over this any day.

Care To Elaborate? Honestly curious...

I am not trying to troll but this seems kind of silly to me because I can just say "hey Siri" and my phone will come to life and answer what I need. I don't know why this would make any sense at all. If someone could explain why this would be different from "hey Siri" on an iPhone, I might change my mind.
The difference is distance. We had the echo for a while (basically useless without Apple Music and other integrations for our Apple household) and the best thing about it was that you could say Alexa from across the room and it would "hear" you. If my phone is across the room, I can't do that without yelling really loud.

I have two echo dots and love them. Having a version of that with siri and access to me beloved Apple Music library? I'd buy it in a flash.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.
But if this thing comes to fruition, Apple KNOWS they have to do better or it will be a flop out the door.
I love my Echo. I love my Apple products as well so if this thing brings more to the table and is priced right, I may consider. Like I said though, I am sure apple knows this. Here's hoping...

Hopefully it will incorporate location based functions, i.e. know what room you are in, what apple tv is also in that room, and be able to control not only homekit but turn on your apple tv to whatever channel/app you request.

I hope then include Apple TV in it - and I'd also like some sensors to determine if someone is in the room or left - could automatically pause the TV if someone leaves to go to the bathroom - or turn on the lights when someone enters - and act like a security system - notify you if someone enters the house when you're not home.

You probably don't own an Echo. It's vastly superior.

Whoever created that image needs to have an education in texture wrapping around 3D objects.

Don't knock that cyclinder over - you'll spill Siri liquid everywhere!!

with an iphone I carry all the time or even airpods, apple watch I can speak too and even siri on my mac, it makes these devices redundant unless i'm missing something.

I'm more than likely to wear my watch/carry iphone/be wearing my airpods than be in the same room talking to this thing.

Do you live alone? If anyone else lives with you, how do they have this kind of experience when your iPhone is out of the house with you? What do they do when you are away for a week or two for vacation/travel?

It's the same argument made against, "why can't our iPhones be the :apple:TV remote?" It can. But again, that's great for singles living alone... but as soon as the "remote" leaves the home, how do the rest back at home control the :apple:TV?

This- like :apple:TV- is primarily meant to be a stationary (at home) device... not a mobile device that may or may not be at home at any given time.

Note: I've been fairly skeptical about the merits of one of these myself... until I'm at friend's homes with one of the competitor's versions. They use them a lot and competitor devices seem almost Star-Trekkian "computer..." useful and very simple to use. Several of these friends have iPhones but still favor Echo vs. "Hey Siri...". Siri will have to make some big strides to seem as good IMO.

I can't imagine Siri working at this level. I have an Echo and it's amazingly accurate and fast. Siri is just a train wreck.
SIRI's voice recognition has gotten amazingly good. I can dictate normally to it and get about 90-95% accuracy. i'll get one or two words wrong - that's about it. i'd hardly consider that a train wreck. What Apple needs to do is increase SIRI's capabilities, which I have not doubt they're doing.

Please Apple, don't release any Siri hardware without fixing the software first.

You know what Siri really is a disappointment. The other day I was driving to pick up a friend, and asked Siri to "share my location with X friend," she had no clue what I was talking about. I tried other variations to no avail. Honestly, the only thing Siri is good at is to create calendar events.

Call Apple, ask for Phil or Craig - say I sent you.

If the price is right & audio quality equivalent or better, I could see this replacing my Sonos Play1 sitting in my kitchen in a heartbeat.
