Echo is not as good as you people are making it out to be. It's probably correct on like 30% of tries.
That's not true at least in my case. I have both Siri and Alexa and I use Siri a lot (or at least try to) and I can tell you that in my experience Alexa beats Siri hands down!

Apple's widely rumored Siri-based smart speaker and home hub has an "over 50 percent chance" of being announced at WWDC, scheduled for June 5-9, according to often-reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities.

Kuo said Apple's smart home product will likely launch in the second half of 2017 and cost more than the Amazon Echo, $179. The device will supposedly support AirPlay with "excellent acoustics performance" from one woofer and seven tweeters. Kuo said its performance will be similar to the iPhone 6/6s.

An excerpt from Kuo's research note obtained by MacRumors:Last week, leaker Sonny Dickson likewise said Apple's smart speaker could be announced as early as WWDC. He said the device will run a variation of iOS with unspecified Beats technology, in addition to a Mac Pro-like concave top with built-in controls and speaker meshing covering the majority of its surface.

Apple's plans for a smart home device and Amazon Echo competitor were first revealed by The Information in May 2016, and Bloomberg reported that the device had entered prototype testing in September.

The latter report said Apple's smart home device would be able to control appliances, locks, lights, and curtains through Siri voice commands. It added that some of the prototypes in testing have facial recognition sensors, in line with a CNET report claiming the device could have a built-in camera.

Kuo said Taiwan-based Inventec will be the exclusive speaker supplier, including both the woofer and tweeters.

If it's more expensive than the Echo I won't buy it was hoping they would bring a Echo dot equivalent out . Got the dot pretty good but wouldn't pay a t more than £50

to be honest, Smartwatches did not take off and I am not sure if they will, ever...outside geek world.

Sales are going up. You look at the recent software and hardware updates for the Apple Watch and it's right where it needs to be. GPS and water proofing. Just need to get the battery to where it lasts a week.

For me, home control with HomeKit.
"Hey Siri, set the mood".
*Dims living room lights, plays Close the Door by Teddy Pendergrass*

My hope would be Apple would offload some geofencing type duties to it, e.g. Do X when it no longer detects my iPhone for 5 minutes, do Y when it detect my iPhone in the evening when I've come home, etc.

With a camera built in there are many more things it could do like act as a alarm/motion detector, be remote speaker that has some quality sound vs Echo, paired with Home Kit and Apple TV could monitor other rooms etc. endless possibilities , view video remotely from HomeKit on your iPhone

It reminds me of the HiFi. People like to talk about how it was a failure, but the truth is that it sparked a massive surge in iPod accessories which not only net Apple obscene royalties but helped maintain their foothold in the music/phone market. Something like this, if used to drive Homekit adoption could help Apple maintain their dominance.

Some of us here already have an Echo and or a Google home, but the total investment in home automation is still small. It doesn't matter if they work well or not, because eventually the masses will acquire blinds, coffee makers, and other historically unconnected devices that have these features. It's an App Store thing. If you already have devices that work with Siri, you are more likely to buy things that use Siri. By investing in something like this, just like the HiFi, Apple helps advertise for the accessory makers in exchange for building stronger bonds to their ecosystem.

It doesn't have to be the best product on the market. It just has to alert people that the market exists. If this helps other manufactures justify Homekit integration then Apple wins.

Why?
I would be surprised if it didn't.
It would be crazy to unveil a new product that' is essentially obsolete on arrival.

Too open makes it too easy to sync with other non Apple speakers which makes you less likely to buy the subsequent add on products down the line.

Apple don't care about standards or sound quality, they care about upsell and ecosystem lock in.

How long have they ignored Apt X on the iPhone? (certainly not happening now they've decided to pick a fight with Qualcomm), how long was NFC ignored? And when it was included it was locked down to only work with Apples services.

Expect more propriety W1 shenanigans.

Naww I don't buy any of that. far too many benefits to Bluetooth 5 for Apple not to take advantage of.

I skipped the new Apple and Beats Air buds for the Bluetooth 5 version.

Yeah no. Until Apple gets rid of its asinine privacy policy and stops neutering Siri then maybe this will be useful for more than just "Set a reminder" commands.

I'll take an Echo over this any day.
The NSA thanks you.

To really get the full benefits of these voice-activated devices one device isn't enough....
Especially if the device controls the home thermostat etc
At $500 that could get very expensive.

Intially I was thinking $199 to be competitive, but lets say $249

Amazon dot pack 3 units $130

Apple Home Siri 3 units $750 approx

SONOS Play one 3 units $600
Amazon Dot 3 units $130
Total $730

For home automation, Apple Watch is the way to go... it's on you all the time... no need to have a bunch of these devices scattered throughout the house. It costs a little more than echo and google home but blows it away in overall functionality.

This isn't even a confirmed thing yet and already feels DOA. I have 2 Amazon Echos and they're pretty great for simple things. Apple can't seem to get Siri to work in any capacity from their own phone, let alone tied into 3rd party services.
Apple, start focusing on your core hardware again. At least get THAT right.

Love my 1st generation apple watch Sport, fantastic device, highly recommended.

Good luck with that. Don't think that will be happening any time soon.
The next version is a certainty. Bluetooth 5 will be in all the new devices. I have no idea why you think Apple would not opt in as it uses the current standard itself.

"Searching the web for [99.9% of what was asked], I have added a link to your Safari reading list."

The Amazon Echo is already a bit steep in price. How did we not expect to see something similar to an overpriced set of Beats headphones.

What would impress me is an ATV5 (with 4K) that also doubled as an Alexa-like speaker. Nix the Siri remote (that I constantly lose and never use thanks to my TV's universal remote) and allow me to navigate with just my voice.
