I don't think this matter much for Apple as long as these are maintained:
1 - developers stay interested
2 - profit margins

I never thought for one moment that in the long run apple could keep up with Android.

Yep. Are you suggeting Samsung's smartphones, phablets and tablets don't account for a significant portion of their bottom line? If that's the case how is it these "record profits" came after the Galaxy brand became so popular?

Still don´t understand what do you try to say.

Operating income for Samsung mobile division has been greater than the operating income for Apple mobile division.

Really, what are you trying to say?

I will never understand why some of you try to bash anything that it is not Apple as if they have good income, good products means that you would lose something.

This, it seem for some people here that if other have good results, Apple would lose something. It is not a sum zero game.

Types of phones are trendy as trends sway with the wind.

If Android keeps coming out with what's hot, i.e. bigger screens, WiFi sharing while still being very close to Apple in terms of ecosystems and overall functionality, they'll continue to come out on top.

As far as price, if Apple continues to create only higher-end products, thats exactly the only clientel they will have buying their products.

If Samsung sold that many GS3/4 and Notes this quarter then its pretty amazing that Apple's operating income was higher than Samsung's ($9.2B vs $8.5B), and net income only slightly less ($6.9B vs $6.96B) considering Apple had no new products in the quarter other than the MacBook Air.

http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/320193/000119312513300670/d552802d10q.htm

Then consider this

Profit
Samsung (mobile division) +52% (vs 2012
Q2)
Apple (entire) -22% (vs 2012 Q2)

Yeah that cheaper iPhone, trouble with that is Apple states, or the people in the know state, that it's for 'developing markets only'. And that is NOT the UK or USA markets etc. So we won't apparently be offered the cheaper iPhone and will again only get the full blown top end one.
We shall see though.

I'd make a strong distinction between UK and USA markets.

In the USA, the carriers charge an obscene amount of money for your contract, which totally dwarves the cost of the iPhone. If Apple sold a cheap iPhone at half the price than an expensive iPhone, the monthly cost to the user wouldn't go down very much. (There are of course plenty of idiots who think they get the phone for $199 or $99 or free and don't see their monthly payments. I really cannot understand how people enter a contract for $100 a month or more over two years and make their decision based on an extra $199 one-time payment which is just over $8 per month).

In the UK, if you look for example at the price at O2, if you buy an iPhone 5 with a two year contract, you pay about £22 per month for the phone and £13 per month for the service, total £35. A phone at half the price would cost £11 + £13 = £24; that's significant less.

This has nothing to do with "developing" markets.

If the customer pays for iPhone + ripoff charges, then a cheaper iPhone doesn't make much difference. If you pay for iPhone + reasonable charges, then a cheaper iPhone makes a huge difference.

Don't worry, he'll find a way to spin that as well.

Samsung fans seem to be happy about the obscene profits that Samsung is making. They seem to forget who is paying for these profits. Time to lower prices, Samsung.

Indeed .... Ignorance is bliss and perhaps innovation is no longer Apple's forte any more...and yes...maybe 2013 was the year even the fanboys couldn't make excuses for...but...they did get Brand Of The Year
Come on Apple. Straight To Six - The world won't wait another year anymore. A repackaged, souped-up, same as before last years model wont cut it any more. Those days are gone.

Wake Up!

No Jobs is the reasons Apple is going down the Swanee ...

No jobs is what Apple will be left with unless somebody there realises you can't get away with resizing the same old stuff incessantly and not think people might get a tad suspicious that the research department boys have, been on holiday for the last three years.

so youre fussing about apple doing the same thing as sammy and all other manufacturers do? the s3 to s4 update is no different that the iphone 5 to 5s update. they all do it. no one comes out with a totally new phone every year

The first chart is for smartphones only, so it is apples to apples. Apple grew only 20% since last year. Samsung smartphones now outsell Apple 2 to 1

According to this data, Samsung smartphones now outship Apple 2 to 1

Not if AT&T and Verizon follow T-Mobile example and drop phone subsidy.

They can do what O2 does in the UK:

http://www.o2.co.uk/refresh

With O2 Refresh, your monthly bill is split into 2 parts:

Phone Plan
the cost of the phone phoneplan

Airtime Plan
all your data, minutes and texts airtimeplan

So when you want a shiny new phone, just pay off your Phone Plan. Choose which phone you want next, and then start again.

Paid off your Phone Plan, but don’t want a new phone just yet? Carry on paying just your Airtime Plan and have a lower monthly bill.

Samsung Electronics breaks out their operating profit by segment. Their mobile segment is 68% of their operating profit. Samsung's mobile operating profit this quarter was $5.6B USD, their total operating profit was $8.6B USD

http://www.samsung.com/us/aboutsams...se/downloads/2012/20130726_conference_eng.pdf

I don't see anywhere in Apple's 10Q, or on their website where they break out operating profit. I see it for sales but not profit. They have one total for operating profit which was $9.2B

http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/320193/000119312513300670/d552802d10q.htm

My point was, its interesting that with Samsung introducing new mobile products in the quarter and Apple not releasing anything other than MBA refresh in June, Apple was still able to generate more operating profit than Samsung.

You can visit their iPhone page at http://www.o2.co.uk/refresh/phones-on-o2-refresh#tabs

While a lot cheaper than US prices, their pricing strategy is weird. You'd expect that if you pay £100 more upfront, you pay £100 less over the next 24 months. But it's all over the place. You can save about £80 for some phones by paying the minimum amount upfront, and for other phones by paying the maximum upfront. There's even an iPhone 4 where you have the choice between paying nothing upfront and £10 per month, or paying nothing upfront and paying £15 per month.

I had to read this twice because I honestly thought you accidentally put Samsung in there where Apple should be.

Are you being satirical in your comment?

Apple (entire) -22% (vs 2012 Q2)

So even with a 22% decline for Apple and a 52% increase for Samsung, Apple still generated more operating profit. Of course these numbers also reflect no new mobile products from Apple in the quarter whereas the year ago quarter included the new retina iPad.

I'm glad that you have found those statistics and you're trying to put them everywhere you can even if they don't make sense like here.

Did you read the post I replied to?

And after all, there have always been accusations that Apple's success is just based on marketing, when Samsung spends much more on marketing than Apple but somehow that never gets mentioned, and there have always been demands that Apple should lower prices because they make too much profit, so when Samsung makes some good profit it's obvious that the same arguments used against Apple should be used against Samsung as well.

And it's not as if they are spending much on designing their phones.

Do you know where those warehouses full of not sold smartphone are?

This. If products are shipping but not selling eventually inventory write offs will be reflects in the financials (see Microsoft and Surface RT). The question, in my mind, isn't shipped vs sold, its how these research firms come up with their numbers and how accurate they really are, since Apple seems to be the only one reporting shipments on a quarterly basis. Go back a couple years ago and IDC was predicting Windows Phone would be the #2 mobile OS behind Android by 2015. Does anyone really believe that?

How do they not make sense?

You point, now that the "units shipped", "revenue" and other comparisons are not so positive, it is clear.

Really, don't you people get tired trying to find negative things to say from other companies? Can't all of you be happy with the results Apple make? And they are amazing.

I think the comment about Samsung doesn't get made because Apple is believed to be a premium brand and their profit margins are considerable. And always have been. And they proudly report a ~40% profit margin across the board. Samsung doesn't.

But I agree - that it's just as fair to comment on Samsung when appropriate. As a consumer - I don't think anyone should get excited about high mark ups on products. As a stockholder perhaps - but as a consumer not so much.

Your last comment is funny. Are you suggesting that Samsung's newer phones look like Apple's? That their UI skin looks like Apple's? Really?

Do you know where those warehouses full of not sold smartphone are?

No but I do know that every phone manufactured and shipped has not been sold yet. I also know that the data given was on shipments. I just don't like to use words like "sold" when the data I'm using doesn't use that word either. Is your argument less strong if you use the phrase "out shipped" rather than "outsold"? If so, you should rethink your argument. If not, then just stay true to the data you are given.

How many still in Service

My questions is simple of all the Smart Phone Brands and Models,

How many are still in service 6 months, 1 year or 2 years after initial activation?

How many are still being used by the original purchaser?

I know my daughter is in the Android Market, and she "needs" to upgrade/change to the latest phone and trade hers in about every 6-9 months. Sometimes it is broken and just needs replacing, sometimes she wants the newest features. Her Samsung Galaxy 4S lasted about 1 month before she dropped it and had to buy a new one. She accounts for two purchases but only one is still in service.

I am sure this happens on the Apple side as well although I do not personally know anyone that goes from model to model, most people I know skip a gen and upgrade every two years.

Huh, all I'm saying is its kind of amazing that Apple was able to generate more operating profit than Samsung even though they had no major product release in the quarter and Samsung did.
