New iPhone in 2009?

It won't be much different. Maybe they will add a camera in front. I'll wait for iPhone 4G.

"industry checks"??

What does that mean when it is at home? Phone calls to Apple and other companies? Talks with chips/screen manufacturers? Not sure how this analyst has any serious grip on what Apple is doing furtively.

Finally, the analyst points to additional iPhone colors to be launched in time for this year's holiday season as well as a brand new iPhone in the first half of 2009.
Boy those analysts don't miss a trick do they? First half of 2009 huh? The first iPhone launched in the first half of 2007. The 3G iPhone launched "roughly" around the same time 2008...so let's see...when would the next iPhone launch? Maybe the first half of 2009? ;)

Probably predicting based on past releases. Or perhaps what new products the other industry players are releasing.

A new iPhone in the first half of 09!?!?

It better be the iPhone nano or some other "minor" revision..

exactly...I really can't see them releasing a new iphone, will they then release a new iphone when the 3g model hits 1yr? that's a new iphone almost every 6 months...very unlikely

I thought this was talking about the MB's at first. Whew. Shoulda paid more attention to the words.

Previous rumors anticipated the iPhone 3G in black, white, and Product RED. Sounds plausible that red (and maybe others) would come later this year, once this initial launch rush is past.

I wanted red first, white second, and didn't want black. Until I saw them. Now I'm choosing black--I like the back and front matching.

I hope that Apple doesn't just release a red one. I would like to see various other colors as well. It will kind of take us back to the original Apple logo.

EeeMac anyone?
Wouldn't this make the Sales of the MacBook Air Go Down Extremely?
:apple: Just Couldn't Pull that off.
or could this be That Mac Tablet Nobody need's?

either way, it'll ruin MacBook Air Sales.

Stuart

mac tablet nobody needs?? And you think everyone already needs new colours to their iphone let alone a NEW one already set for less then a year later?? Apples dumb. Please start making computers again, and lay off the phone for a while. I'd be glad to see new mac minis or mac pros out this christmas over new colored iphones..

I'd be totally amazed if iP3.0 isn't a total and substantial hardware refresh with at least twice the raw power (cpu and graphics) and a ton of new hardware enhancements. Basically it will be getting on for 2 years since the core product was released and the competition will be just about to release realistically ( albeit still lesser) competitive products. Don't forget we'll have Semi P.A' s gifts to the Apple family by then...so who knows what's in store...

If Apple want to keep the iPhone amazing buzz going at current levels they will have to release a substantially enhanced product and not just a few software tweaks and a better camera.

I'm sure iPhone 3.0 is in prototype stage now for another July 09 extravaganza...

The interesting thing is how they will release a new SDK with support for a substantial h/w revision without alerting everyone...

If there is a new iPhone in the first half of 2009 I'm going to flip a s#%t.

I can get on board with a new iPhone every year, but anything less than that is a little ridiculous.
So don't buy one every year.
What's so hard about this concept?

I really sincerely hope they dont release a new iPhone in the first half of 2009.

I don't believe they'd do this anyway really, less than a year after releasing the iPhone 3G?
I think we may very well see minor updates such as new colours and maybe a biggger memory, price drops etc, but not anything substantial (front side camera, and so on...)

I don't know who wrote that article but PLEASE STOP CALLING IT A "SUB-NOTEBOOK"!!
Call it the mactouch or macbook touch. And sub-notebook will hardly be a decent description of it. It will be like nothing the industry has seen before!

But unfortunately, the reality of it is... it most likely will be a sub-notebook as opposed to any kind of touch screen Macbook.

It only makes sense. Back in the day iPods used to only come in white. Then they added a black option. Then colors (or the mini might have come before that with colors, can't remember). Anyways, we're bound to see color iPhones - it's just hard to imagine now. Probably anodized aluminum, too.

You should take the money you were going to use to buy your annual iPhone next year, and buy an iPhone for somebody who can't afford one.

Agreed

"its been said before by many.......that Jobs should have taken the PB12" powerbook as the basic idea and turned that into a MBP 12" and or a MBA 12"....I still have my PB12", it works OK, eventually I hope to call on OWC for a bigger HD etc.....so many expressed this idea and Jobs ignored all of us and instead rushed out a half finished OSX and called this mess Leopard--sure many computer savvy were able to work theirs out and I am glad they could but too many are STILL having problems that this high and mighty Jobs still hasn't addressed and what do I read in macrumors that his Highness Jobs apologizes for MobileMe goofups yet he refuses so far to acknowledge the difficulty Leopard has been for a lot of people....and this is half the reason I will go no further than Tiger 10.4.11 using iWork6 and iLife6 as people have been having problems with iWork8 and iLife8 also. I am not adept with a computer....the times I have driven to the Apple store nearest me with what were problems for me--and they have been a fantastic bunch (Old Orchard)....but so many wanted and hoped for a re-worked PB12" and Jobs BLEW IT BIG TIME IN NOT MAKING A MBP12" AND MAKING 100% SURE LEOPARD WORKED BEFORE RELEASING IT."

:apple: should have made a true 12 in PBG4 replacement. I have and continue to clamor for a true 12/13 inch MBP level machine.

"There remains a small but vocal group of individuals who want Apple to release a true sub-notebook with screen sizes smaller than the 13" screen that the MacBook Air houses".

Yes. Something much lighter and smaller than the MacBook Air is needed. The full Mac in your hand and in your pocket with a 5-inch or so screen, wired and wireless full blown video, true Firewire and Ethernet ports. Something like this:

OQO model e2
http://www.oqo.com

For full wired and wireless presentations from NATIVE Keynote and PowerPoint files (animations, transitios, video, etc).

Thousands needed for our University. And we need them now.

new iPhone? Early 2009?

You heard it here first:
A friend of mine who works for Apple gave me the scoop on the iPhone 3G about 1 1/2 months before SJ announced it. He was correct in telling me about the current release specs. He tells me now that there will most likely be a new iPhone released (announced) at Macworld in January. He claims that the January releases will be the major upgrade with the July update being incremental. He also told me that from now on, I should get on the January release cycle, not the July cycle.

Allegedly, SJ wanted this most recent update to be a much more major one, but logistics wouldn't allow. Therefore Apple slapped a couple of new chips in the old motherboard and, viola, iPhone 3G. This was just to satisfy the immediate needs for an iPhone with 3G technology.

The January update will be a completely redesigned motherboard that will integrate much more technology, even more efficiently. THIS is the one that most likely will have the front facing camera for video-conferencing, etc. Unfortunately, those of us like me who just upgraded to iPhone 3G may not be eligible for the subsidized pricing at that point. I will upgrade to this one anyway and stick to the January cycle from there on out.

July 11, 2008 was not in the first half of the year.

It was "officially announced" (launched) at WWDC 2008 in June 2008 (first half of the year). The worldwide shipments (actual sales to consumers) began on July 11. The announcement was the launch of the new product. An announcement within a few weeks of actual sales beginning would still be deemed to be that launch date.

If would not be deemed a true launch if it was announced that Apple qould be offering a 4G iPhone in 2010 next week. The launch date would not be considered August 2008.

I believe Apple had originally hoped that iPhone 3G would be ready for WWDC, but manufacturing delays and/or shipment and volume problems caused the delay. However, since the iPhone 3G was the focus of WWDC 2008, they were not going to delay the announcement until the kinks were worked out.

No Point

There is no point to sub notebooks. If there ever was, that market is dying. With power fitting into smaller and smaller spaces, who wants a notebook, the size of a MacBook air that does less than a MacBook air. Maybe it costs less? I doubt it would be worth it considering all the docking equipment you'd need to buy.

Are these people really this dumb? a new iPhone? I hope they just mean larger storage not a "new" iPhone. There is no way apple is going to have a whole new iPhone that fast. I think there wont be a whole new one till 2010, when their at&t contract is out.

As far as another sub notebook their wont be another one they have the Air.

The only place where their product line is lacking is in a consumer desktop. They need something that is not a mini, or iMac. They need a regular desktop, not with 2 quad cores but with 1 quad core, for right around that 899 - 1199 price range. I would love a regular desktop style mac, but I can't afford a Mac Pro, I think many people would love that.
