Believing the stuff about the iphone. It had better happen. I really want it, but only on PAYG !! The current one isn't quite good enough for me. 32Gb and a better camera and i'm sold straight away and new colours could be cool!

I would be all over a "nano" iPhone on Pay As You Go.

This is with the understanding that such a thing probably would not have mail, safari, etc., but hopefully some of the one-trick web apps like Maps and weather.
What's the difference between "price point" and "price" ? For that matter, how about "size and shape" and "form factor" ?
:

What's the difference between "Interior" and "Fit and Finish"? Probably nothing, but I get along with my friends in the auto industry a lot better if I try not to get hung up on lingo.

That being said, I'm also not going to pretend to be an economist, but you can find a nice explanation and a graph at Wikipedia. Basically, a price point seems to be the tipping point between sales and income. If the price is increased beyond the price point, sales fall off immediately. If you're selling a product, you'll want to know how high you can push the price without affecting sales, and the answer to that question is called a Price Point.
Most people I've encountered on Mac forums don't use the term correctly, myself included.

iPhone color!? Does that mean colored anodized aluminum, or they'll simply change the color of the present 3G iPhone? I'd like to see aluminum back once again I think it looked amazing.

Nope, no more aluminum. They switched to plastic for better cell reception and so that the GPS chip can get a signal. Aluminum backing would have been detrimental to both. :)

Mr. Um is either "in the know" or he is extremely over paid for his job.

How many of us on here who have "been around the block" could have easily told you that there would be a new iPhone in the first half of 09?!? Both iPhones have been released at the end of June of each year.... first half of each year.

As for any notebook rumors, these have been making the rounds for years now so nothing new here. The only rumor that can't be reissued anymore is the PowerBook G5 one.

When these analysts speak out about what Apple has planned for the coming year I just roll my eyes because I'm sure that they have some carnival wheel in their corner skyscraper office with a view that they spin that has all of the rumors that Arn has gotten his hands on over the years and what ever the peg points to they release as their view.

A new iPhone in the first half of 09!?!?

It better be the iPhone nano or some other "minor" revision..

Even I hope so <sigh> but Apple's gonna follow the usual iPod cycle on this one! So expect a new iPhone somewhere between MWSF09 and WWDC09!

If there is a new iPhone in the first half of 2009 I'm going to flip a s#%t.

I can get on board with a new iPhone every year, but anything less than that is a little ridiculous.

However, there remains a small but vocal group of individuals who want Apple to release a true sub-notebook with screen sizes smaller than the 13" screen that the MacBook Air houses.

"Small but vocal" groups are by definition small. "Small but vocal" groups don't buy a lot of products, because they are small. Apple doesn't design products for "small but vocal" groups. They design products for large groups who didn't even know they wanted the product before they saw it.

i think apple's probably going to stick with the plastic iphones. . i liked the aluminum ones, however. but i figure on seeing the black, white and red iphones. nothing really special. if there was an orange or blue one, i'd probably pick one up. . but i doubt it.

I would be extremely surprised to see a new iPhone design in early 09. The only thing I can think of would be a 32GB version of the current iPhone3G. There is supposed to be a flash chip capacity bump next spring so we'll see (Samsung and Intel are moving to sub-35nm processes for flash).

Infineon isn't coming out with a die-shrunk version of their current HSDPA baseband chip that is in the iPhone3G until the second half of 2009. If anything, we see a new iPhone in the second half of 2009 (probably Sept/October or later) with better battery life and maybe some other new features (video record and upload?). This chip could be as far out as December 09, so it may not even come until early 2010.

Next years iPhone wont be much of a boost with the exception of battery life and probably styling and maybe a price cut ($99 8GB, $199 16GB and $299 32GB). Though it will probably have HSPA (7.2Mb/s down and 5.4Mb/s up) but AT&Ts network is crap so its not like you'd get those speeds anyways. I get about 1Mb/s or so at home and 750kb/s at work (urban area) with the current HSDPA (3.6Mb/s down and UMTS 384k/s up) chip.

A iPhone nano isn't on tap either - it took apple 3 revisions of the iPod before they got to the mini/nano. I wouldn't be surprised if we see three major revisions to the iPhone before we get to the iPhone nano - so figure late 2010, early 2011.

Why would you flip a s#%t? Just because you don't have the latest and greatest? When will people learn that you'll never win the race against technology. There's always something better, faster,.....

The only things I think will be "new" are a 32GB model and back plate colors. No big deal.

I'm telling you.... Adding colors to iPods (already done... and look what happened) iPhones, and MacBooks will cause them to be bought by more college students. If you used anodized colored aluminum, made it a little thinner in a wedge shape (like the Air) with the big multi-touch trackpad (and possible available in 15" :)) I would buy one. Maybe even over the iMac.

Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink. (plus black and silver) :D Make all the ipods and iPhones available in these colors... :D and make the iPhone available for various carriers...

;) an iMan can dream, can't he?

The analyst Maynard Um also cites "industry checks" to confirm that the MacBook and iPod will see updates later this year. Both Apple notebook and iPod updates have been widely expected in the coming months with some signs pointing to a September launch.
Um, well, duh!

Um also claims there will be a "first half of 2009" launch of the a Mac "sub-notebook". Talk of an Apple sub-notebook has died down since the release of the MacBook Air, which has partially filled that need in Apple's product line. However, there remains a small but vocal group of individuals who want Apple to release a true sub-notebook with screen sizes smaller than the 13" screen that the MacBook Air houses. Um believes another "sub-notebook" was originally intended for launch in 2008 but has been delayed until 2009.
So what is this "sub-notebook" then?
  1. A smaller version (11"~12") of the MacBook Air? Apple could either make the MacBook Air smaller, or do something like the iPod classic and make a thinner 11" version (80 GB HDD) and a thicker 13" version (160 GB HDD).
  2. A Mac OS X subnotebook with a 11"~12" display? ("MacBook nano") This is possible, although it would have to be distinctive from the Air. A ULV processor, SSD by default (32/64 GB SSD instead of 80 GB HDD / 64/128 GB SSD), a thicker case, a few more ports, and a lower display resolution could be some possible distinctions.
  3. An actual Mac OS X sub-notebook (Eee-like) with a 7"~9" display? ("MacBook nano") Mac OS X does not work too well with lower resolutions, and Apple has used full-size keyboards in Macs. Also, the specifications would be low, lower than the MacBook Air. So Mac OS X would have to be modified for the best user experience, maybe even cut down.
  4. A Mac OS X multi-touch tablet (or subnotebook) with a 11"~12" display? ("MacBook touch") This was rumored by Jason O'Grady and others a few months to weeks ago. While the glass trackpad "MacBook touch" rumors had largely overshadowed this one, it may still be true, and separate from the MacBooks. However, Mac OS X would have to be modified to take best advantage of display multi-touch, which may account for the delay. It could also be released simultaneously with Mac OS X Snow Leopard. If Um is right, then I doubt this tablet was the product transition. July was most likely too close to its release for a delay of this magnitude.
  5. A Mac OS X tablet (or subnotebook) with a 7"~9" display? ("MacBook touch") See 3. and 4. This device may also be marketed as a high-performance media device, well above the iPod touch.
  6. A 5"~8" mini-tablet running iPhone OS? ("iWrite") This solves the resolution and specifications problems, but the iPhone OS would have to be slightly modified to make best use of the large screen. It would have productivity apps like iLife and iWork. However, Maynard Um claims a Mac subnotebook, not an iDevice. This device could also be the Newton revival AppleInsider predicted last year finally coming to fruition. It may also be marketed as a high-end media player and media creator/editor above the iPod touch.
(High-dpi displays are possible for 3. and 5., if squinting at text 1/2~3/4 the size of that of a regular MacBook display isn't a problem. And if Mac OS X is modified and cut down enough on those devices, why not just use the iPhone OS?)

If there is a new iPhone in the first half of 2009 I'm going to flip a s#%t.

Why do you need a new iPhone every year?

And by the way, what is the reliability record for new predictions (and release timeframes) from analysts (not regurgitating existing rumors)? Better be quite a bit above 0%.

Good, post-pone that other crap and bring out an updated mini and ACD's already will you Apple!

You know, I just don't see a so-called "netbook" (still don't like the term) or UMPC coming from Apple. Perhaps a tablet, since they're so touch-y these days and < rant >think that soft keyboards are the wave of the future.< /rant >

Anyway, I don't think they'll release a vanilla sub-notebook that doesn't push the boundary of technology. Even though that's exactly what I'm in the market for. And I have no confidence that they'll meet a $399 price on such a device; it's very un-Apple.

How can you delay something that does not exist and therefore does not have a release date?

Products can be internally delayed versus their internal schedule, even if that schedule is never released to the public. It's fairly common commercial parlance, and it's fairly common for analysts to make these comments about consumer and business goods of a wide variety, from cars and refrigerators to software and computers.

That being said, I'm skeptical about the smaller Mac. I'm sure (being one of them) that it would make a difference for people shopping for notebooks in the truly ultralight / subnotebook range. I'm not sure whether it'd cannibalize people who're coming from the other direction (e.g. people for whom the MBA appealed because of its size and weight but who had not specifically been looking for a notebook that weighed 2 lbs or anything like that). It might and it might not, depending on the configuration. Clearly, the 15" MBP does not cannibalize the sales of the 17" MBP to such an extent that prevents Apple from making both, so by the same logic I'm not sure if a 10-11" screen smaller sibling would cannibalize MBA sales.

The colors are kind of a gimme, especially with the plastic cover. I'd be shocked if there isn't at least one new color iPhone by Thanksgiving.

Brand new iPhone?

Like an iPhone Nano or just another revision of the current model?!?!

All I'm saying is that Apple has never committed to anything but the analyst makes it sound like they have failed to meet deadlines. I just annoys me, like when Apple gets pulled over the coals for not meeting analysts goals instead of their own!?

I do agree that a sub notebook while nice is a bad move, it seems that everyone has a sub-notebook coming out now for stupidly low prices, that is not a market that Apple is interested in.

I do see your point... it's a general problem with the stock market model of capitalization and people have commented many times that the practice may contribute to increased economic volatility. I just mean to say, however, that it's an industry standard among analysts -- they do it to almost every company for which it's possible. Apple gets a lot of attention, but the same process affects Dell, Microsoft, HP, Oracle, IBM, etc.

I think we'll see incremental updates to the MacBook, MacBook Pro, and iMac lines in September/October.

The next likely timeframe for "news" will be in January during Macworld 2009. My expectations are that Apple will have redesigns in store for the MacBook and MacBook Pro and perhaps a new portable model announcement (with a shipping date to follow).

Also, let's not forget about where we are. Apple has already spec'd out, tested, and is ready to ramp up production of the next Mac revisions. From a processor perspective, there isn't really anything new for Apple to benefit from. Also, it wouldn't be logical for Apple to release redesigns now which opens the door to potential and unforeseen problems heading into the holiday shopping season.

We need to look at Intel's roadmap for the best clues. The next generation chipsets are the key and they will be released in 2009.

Just my 2 cents!!
