reason for shortage

Not necessarily low supply
Not necessarily high demand

Definitely those dang asian scalpers.

Can someone please tell me how when the mall doors open at 8:30, and even how the cleaning guy lets someof us in from the cold at 7:30, how the heck are there already 5 asians sitting on the floor outside Apple when we reach the glass doors?????????

What I'm not seeing are XOOMs in the wild. :p
My boss has one so I've gotten to see it first hand. I much prefer the iPad though. Even though he's an Android nut we're still writing some apps for the iPad first before we even consider Android. Our market is adopting iPads and not Androids.

He is off by at least 1, mine has no backlight bleed. I believe this alone invalidates his statement.

And how many Xoom's have been sold or other droid tablets? Actually sold that is?

I know this isn't an official number from Apple and I would like to get some official "sold" numbers vs the games played with numbers shipped to retailers and counting those as "sold." I think this will be hard to beat. Having 14+ million sold with iPad1 and now about 2.5 million sold with iPad2, the iPad in general will be a force for a few years. You figure droid would have to sell over 80 million just to make the iPad be around 20% market share. Don't see that happening for a while.

yadda

how many of those 2.6million have been returned or swapped for light leaking issues?, guess the bottom line with apple these days is the revenue, ship any defective **** and the masses lap it up, disappointed as a mac user for years that quality is diminishing.

It's going to be more than 3 years for the competition to drive iPad sales below 50% in the tablet market.

3 years and < than 50% is a big hypothesis. I guess I'll be proved wrong on either accounts.

Since he said 'only' 2.4 of the 2.5 million you should just consider yourself lucky you got one of the 100,000 without a problem.

Dunno about that! My 2010 Macbook pro pisses all over my 2006 white macbook for quality!
Maybe the odd iPad is ***** but c'est la vie.
I think that is the same with every company.
They get exchanged for a good one if they're found to be defective.

You haven't been a Mac user for long enough.

Quality issues

In late November 2003, a number of iBook G3 users reported display problems with their laptops. In December 2003, a group of users headed by Michael Johnson and Bill Owen sought to file a class action suit against Apple. In response, Apple initiated the "iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program" in January 2004, which covered the expense of repairing affected iBooks for three years.[3][4] In June 2004, the Repair Extension Program was expanded to cover "all White G3 iBooks".[5][6]
The iBook G4 seemed to suffer from display problems similar to those of the iBook G3, but was not covered by the repair extension program. Owners of iBooks that required expensive repairs for these problems submitted new class action lawsuits in December 2006.[7]
On May 2, 2007, the Danish Consumer Board published an extensive report[8][9] made by an external party concerning the Apple iBook G4 logic board issue. A press release[10] referred to the global consequences this could have for possible guarantee claims.

Sometimes machines break. On average, however, Apple still has the best record of all consumer tech companies (sometimes by a huge margin) - both in customer satisfaction and customer service. There's nothing anyone can say to dispute those facts. You can look them up for yourself. There is no indication whatsoever that this is about to change anytime soon.

Dude-- 95% of the buyers will have no idea their unit has backlight bleed, if it even does have it. Only the anal-retentive hypercritical neckbeard Comic Book Store Guy lookalikes who test their unit in a darkroom will know if such a "flaw" exists. My ipad and iphone 4 tell me that quality is pretty doggone high.

At this point, they'll outsell the iPhone (per month), if they haven't already.

Out of interest, anyone in the UK who ordered an iPad on launch day and got a 25th April delivery date actually had their order arrive yet? Just wondering as I cancelled mine and got one from tesco instead. Just wondering if I'd have stuck with apple, when would I have received my order...

I am gonna go out on a limb and say that sometime next week the lead time will drop again.

While this article makes mention that once again that the lead time has dropped, the actual shipping date in April, still sits squarely with those that did not make the initial order batch on launch day, like me, and had a 5-6 week delivery.

They must have made a huge production run following the initial launch to enable the lead times to come down week after week. Especially since all of these orders received approx 24 hrs from launch until now will be fulfilled around the same week or two.

Not sure how far back your Apple/Mac memory goes. They shipped a lot of junk in the 90s. And maybe you don't remember all those maddening extension conflicts. As far as build quality and materials the 2011 line is far superior to almost any thing Apple has ever made.

Nope, still waiting for mine. Ordered a couple of hours after release and still have an April 15th shipping date with a delivery date of April 26th.

And with 2.4 million with some form of backlight bleeding....

Let's hope the next 2.5 million fare better than this lot.

I don't think that percentage have the backlight bleeding problem. In fact I am pretty sure that most do not. I'm sorry for those who have experienced that though.

These numbers are sick! Incredible!

Especially since so many people (including many on this form but also many so called 'experts') said: "The iPad is DOA, it is a fail" when the iPad1 was a success and the iPad2 was released, they started shouting: "but this one is a fail, it should only be iPad1.5, not worth to buy, will fail" .... good thing nobody listens to those people. I enjoyed the iPad1, handed it down to the kids and enjoy now the iPad2.

Wow

Samsung shipped only 2 million galaxy tabs and its not clear they sold all those over a period of months.

It's amazing how some companies hide the real numbers and nobody really knows how many actually landed in customer hands in a certain period of time.

I still wait for some numbers for WindowsMobile7 - has anybody found any links of how many devices landed in the hands of actual users (not the storage room)?

:) I may be making an incorrect assumption here, but the following link from the Android development site would seem to indicate little more than 200,000 Xooms in the wild.

http://developer.android.com/resources/dashboard/platform-versions.html

Assuming around 100 million Android devices with access to the Android Market, the 0.2% running 3.0 should be almost entirely Xooms.

If my local Best Buy is any indication of the Xoom's success or failure, here's my experience. I was there last night looking at other things and of course, had to go play with the iPad 2. The sales rep came over and he informed me there were none in stock. I wanted to play with the Xoom too and mentioned it to the sales rep. He told me the demo unit was broken and had been for a couple weeks. But, he also mentioned they had plenty in stock if I was interested in a Xoom.

So... basically, looking at it from a consumer standpoint, the Xoom is looking like a forgotten product already.
