Actually, less than 3 weeks. They were available the 11th of march.

At this rate they might be able to announce 5 million sold by their earnings report!

Even a great spin of "a little over a month and we sold 5 million"

Mine finally shipped yesterday. Woot! I'm seeing interest in iPads from people I never expected - and new iPads in the hands of people I never expected.

What I'm not seeing are XOOMs in the wild. :p

Better luck next round, Fandroid Nation. Don't grind your molars to powder in the meantime. ;)

I've seen a Xoom in the wild -- my brother in law was one of the first lucky Xoom owners. If you have bought in to the Android ecosystem or can't do iOS for some reason, then the Xoom is the best option out there -- but it is still no iPad -- complete lack of apps for it right now. I actually saw a Galaxy Tab on a Verizon commercial last night -- I have never seen anybody using one of those and they have been out for over a year.

I think Android is going to have a hard time going mainstream in the tablet arena. They went mainstream in the smartphone arena via 2-for-1 deals and lower pricing and got a huge boost in numbers via forked-Android versions being put onto tons of cheap phones in China (see the asterisk on the number that was reported for Android uptake at end of 2010 for what was considered "Android"). However, they are still climbing in the mainstream on "real" smart phones. What I don't know are many average non-techie person who are satisfied with their Android phones (customer satisfaction numbers back this up). It makes sense too that Android customer satisfaction is lower because the cheap phones that come with Android are less likely to satisfy then the high-end ones. There is no cheap iOS phone to disappoint customers. You can't really count the zealots like the folks like us who post to these forums because we tend to cheer for our favorite operating system despite its flaws (whether iOS or Android) -- but the non-techie crowd are the ones that you really need to satisfy.

I think many of these folks who bought Android because they could get it cheap or could not get iOS on their favorite carrier, and over the next two years we will likely see some shifting here as customer service contracts expire. I don't by any means believe Android is going to disappear and iOS take over -- Jobs had his chance to have iPad-like dominance in smartphones but let Android use Verizon as a proving ground by maintaining exclusivity with AT&T for far too long (the problem with bringing a product to market that is dependent on a third-party like a carrier -- iPad does not suffer from this).

Anyway, if Motorola sticks with tablets they should have a good offering in a year or two with more options for customers and a more solid basis of apps available. Not sure if Motorola will stick with Android though given Google's new bait-and-switch controlling rules. I have said it for years -- Google was pulling the ultimate sneak attack on these desperate manufacturers. They turned the manufacturer's customers into Android customers and the odd thing is that people complain about Apple trying to protect their customer relationships and prevent them from being usurped. It is less evil to try to protect your own customer base from competitors than it is to steal the customer base of your partners -- but both are good business.

"Bought into the Android ecosystem?" But I thought everything about Android was free? ;)

Amen. I think the iPad caught Google off-guard and Google doesn't know quite how to respond to it. That, and I don't think Google has had a really clear vision for Android from day one.

Jobs had his chance to have iPad-like dominance in smartphones but let Android use Verizon as a proving ground by maintaining exclusivity with AT&T for far too long

I don't know that Jobs had a choice. They had to make a deal with the devil (AT&T) to make the iPhone happen at all. Had Apple not done this, the smartphone world would be nothing like it is today. Carriers would still have complete control. The Googles and Microsofts and Palms of the world owe Apple big time in this regard.

Not sure if Motorola will stick with Android though given Google's new bait-and-switch controlling rules.

There will always be hardware manufacturers dumb enough to work for peanuts while the software overlords rake in all the cash. Look at Dell and HP in the PC world. Microsoft is laughing all the way to the bank.

I have said it for years -- Google was pulling the ultimate sneak attack on these desperate manufacturers.

The really odd thing to me is how so many people view Google as the hero in the white hat when in reality Google is a far more insidious threat than Microsoft ever hoped to be. They think Apple's control over their own software and hardware is oppressive, think about Google completely controlling the way we access digital information (and shoving targeted ads based on our personal information down our throats in the process). Truly scary.

The rabid Android fan is naivete at its worst.

2.5 Million iPad??

Where were those 2.5 million iPads shipped to? I ordered one almost 4 weeks ago and still have not received it.

I think those are terrible numbers. They could have sold more but just didn't have them. I know.... They don't want to stock up in a warehouse sitting for a month before the launch.

And supposing they did that and stocked up for a month THEN launched... How would that help get more units into people's hands quicker? Actually, if anything, it would slow things down as they wouldn't be ramping production up as early as they seem to be as theyd have no sales data to go off.

Sorry but it really irritates me when peole criticise apple for what has, ultimately, been a very customer-friendly launch, at least in terms of getting as many units as possible into customer hands as quickly as possible.

still no iPad 2 yet

This starting to get me quite upset.

I sure hope get an an email from Apple by Friday April 8, 2011 that my order has shipped (that would make it 3 weeks after I placed the order.)

When I check the status on line it still says Ships: Apr 21 Delivers: Apr 26

When I call 1-800-MY-APPLE they've been telling me for weeks I shouldn't cancel my original order and order one with the shorter lead-time because all orders will be filled in the sequence that Apple received the order.

Wouldn't matter if you did since the 2-3 weeks from today will be the same ship date. This was the same a week or two ago when they were saying 3-4 weeks.

Oddle enough...

Luck seems to be with me regarding the iPad 2. I snagged one the first day for work from the Campus store (before all the shortages), but was not expecting one by my birthday after the terrible disaster in Japan. Lo and behold, my wife found another one (the last one) at the same store. Guess it pays to work at a PC-oriented campus that has a licensed Apple vendor on campus. (My outfit is 98% Mac, which is unusual in these parts.)

It's a nice upgrade to the original. I don't game, but the task switching is faster and Safari runs like a champ now. However, the magnetic cover is a bust for me, I'm looking into other ones.

Which brings me to my second discovery: Most case manufactures claim to have been kept in the dark, and because of that the case market is still thin. I seem to remember that being a problem after the first launch as well.:(

That's why I haven't cancelled and re-ordered. Going by Apple's new, shorter lead-times should have Apple shipping it by Friday April 8th -- as long as Apple truly does ship according to the date they received the order.

I bet Xoom is selling just as many.

In Bizzarro world, sure. Even the Android enthusiasts know the XOOM is gimped and will soon be outclassed by the new Samsung Tabs. Those actually can compare to the iPad feature for feature (aside from apps)...but probably will not get the momentum they need to ever sell 2.5 million, let alone in a month.

If my local Best Buy is any indication of the Xoom's success or failure, here's my experience. I was there last night looking at other things and of course, had to go play with the iPad 2. The sales rep came over and he informed me there were none in stock. I wanted to play with the Xoom too and mentioned it to the sales rep. He told me the demo unit was broken and had been for a couple weeks. But, he also mentioned they had plenty in stock if I was interested in a Xoom.

So... basically, looking at it from a consumer standpoint, the Xoom is looking like a forgotten product already.

I tried to play with a zoom in a store too! I couldn't figure out how to turn it on, then they told me it was just broken, ha!

Nope, still waiting for mine. Ordered a couple of hours after release and still have an April 15th shipping date with a delivery date of April 26th.

Sorry to hear :( I cant believe they've not shipload them yet for those that ordered immediately!! :(

I win/lose!

I think I win for most delayed order:

Order Date: Mar 11, 2011 at 01:23 PM PDT
Not yet shipped
Ships: Apr 18
Delivers: Apr 21

I had the same experience at Staples. I wanted to see what the hype was about, but they're display unit was dead as well. (They had plenty available though, with at least 20 in the display case.)

Hello seattlejimbob,

if Apple was true to is claim to ship in the order that it received the order, then your's should have shipped on April 1, 2011. So much for that 2 to 3 week lead time.

Now I'm really worried about mine shipping by this Friday, April 8th.

Looks like Apple was able to work around supply pipe-line issues caused by the quake/tsunami.

I'm really enjoying the new iPad. No quality issues with mine.

Facetime between two iPad 2's is really cool. My wife and I chatted for an hour with my brother and sister-in-law in California a couple days ago. I think the big screen worked great for that type of multi-person chat. Facetime on the iPhone is more of a 1-to-1 thing.

My Costco has a big display of them (XOOMs)... still fully stocked :p Ouch!!!

Yeah, and all available instantly. Motorola could have released the XOOM to the whole world at one time and still not have a supply shortage... that's now poorly they are desired.

I bet Xoom is selling just as many.

NOPE! Only 100,000 XOOMs have sold. The demo models seem to break easily, so if a buyer can't try the product they usually don't buy, and a broken demo really says a lot about quality... or the lack thereof.

Apple hit the market with the iPad2 at the right time to stomp on Motorola's parade. I'm not sure but naming a product that sounds like Zune, may be a kiss of death as well.

Let's see:
1. Nearly no apps
2. No better than the market leader
3. No cheaper than the market leader
4. LOOKS cheaper than the market leader
5. Demo units are often broke
6. Consumer Reports gave it a "meh"
7. The XOOM is an orphan product
8. The XOOM sounds like a ZUNE, and sells slower.
