A fan-less macbook? I feel like it's going to take a huge hit in performance/specs just to decrease heating issues.

I'm guessing for *most* people, emailing / web surfing will be fine and they don't really need a supercomputer to do that. I'm a commercial photographer and I would LOVE a thinner / lighter laptop as my camera bag already weighs about 35 lbs... But I need some power. Doesn't seem like there's going to be a place for those two needs to meet for a long time.

A 12" MAC Book pro, with a screen that can detach and re-attach from the body smooth and easy, and once the screen is removed it instantly displays an iOS running system

A limited usefulness geek trick that would appeal to perhaps 2% of either the laptop or tablet audience.

Apple has spoken against the idea of blending tablet and laptop in one system before. Until we have valid proof of even a thought of putting A chips in laptops or Intel in the tablets, one should not expect anything like this from Apple. Double now that Microsoft has tried the same basic idea and it has been a total failure to a lukewarm meh

it amazes me how they keep the 11" MBA and get rid of the 17" MBP

The MBA sells. The 17 really didn't. Not even to business customers.

12" rMBP = 12" iPad pro

Fanless design, touchscreen, now the only thing different between those two are the keyboard and the OS. This seems very promising!

, which I don't think as a goal. I think it might be 12 inch iPad with sensitivity levels ala Wacom tablet, but then again, its market will be very limited to artists who do painting and drawing.

Those artists etc have been using the current "puny" iPad/iPad Air already. Even with its "unacceptable" lack of a "real" display and "real" pen. They aren't clamoring for a Pro iPad. Only geeks on sites like this are screaming Apple Must, Apple Must. So the likelihood of Apple creating something for an audience that isn't asking for it, rather than improving a model witha vastly bigger audience, is slim.

Remember Apple is in this for profit. You make profit by bringing in lots of money and having low costs.

Apple does have a reputation for teaching.

Perhaps Microsoft can learn something along the way, and Apple gets it right, so while Steve Jobs was against this.... anything can change.

All you gotta do is have an Apple logo on the front, and everyone will flock to the nearest Apple Store without thinking

Apple also has a reputation of saying they'll NEVER make such a product...and then a couple of years later...whaddya know? They make it. It's their M.O.

I'm not saying this ipad/laptop hybrid will happen this update. But I think its a very real possibility of happening in the not too distant future.

IMO, this is dead in the water if it doesn't have a Retina display.

I think Apple's plan has been to move over to all Retina as soon as it's feasible. Why go through a new product launch with an inferior display and a less than optimum processor. They would just as well hold back and wait till Broadwell is available and drop in a better display.

Conflict? Sounds more and more like this is about *one* product with all those specs, not two separate ones. Which, to be honest seems like the more natural product progression.

Risk of cannibalization is a short term issue during platform changes and mobility is far more important than raw power for many, coupled with the fact that even an 11" MBA is quite a powerful computer today.

I came to the comments to see if anyone else was thinking this.

i don't see how a 12" MBA would fit with the rumor of a 12" iPad running iOS and OSX

both will cannibalize each others in almost the same market segment

Apple shouldn't go where MS failed
Good for us Apple don't think like you or we would never have seen the iPad.

OSX would be crippled if Apple ever attempted this.

The Safari, word processing and email group - i.e., very light users would probably like this because everything would be dumbed down to their level but for most other people, OSX would be a paper weight.

But isn't the Safari, email, word processing, Facebook group the majority of users?

Yes

Yes, Apple please jeopardize the current and long term functionality of your laptops in order to shave off 3 ounces in weight and 1/4 inch in thickness. That will make a massive difference when I put the laptop in a briefcase or backpack. I will be able to fit literally dozens of extra sheets of paper or maybe even an extra magazine into the saved space. And the saved weight will reduce the total weight of my bag by a good solid 3%. Great!

Just kidding. But not really. The Air is quite light and already has these features. The Pro is light enough and thin enough that improvements in that regards will be of little use for someone who has chosen the heavier and performance based model already, especially if they come with decrease in battery life or GPU performance.

How about an ultra slim 15 17 inch apple? Some of us would like a bigger screen laptop that doesn't feel like we are lugging a baby elephant around.

I really hope they keep the standard Macbook Air and that this thing if true is just an additional product line.
I have zero intetest in a touch screen Macbook -iPad hybrid with lower power CPU in gold.yuk

Ive always dreamed of a device that was a MacBook that ran OS X but had a detachable screen which would automatically switch to running iOS when detached. When you're at home, its a notebook, when you are on the go, its an iPad... Dream of pipes.

Introducing... Mac iOS

I know you said you were kinda kidding, but this attitude is visible in way too many posts.

These things add up, for god's sake! I just bought a new bag that's 700g lighter. Last year I bought a mirrorless camera that saved me around the same. Now, if Apple gets the 12" Air under 1kg, I'll have saved at least 350g compared to my current 13" Air. That's *2kg* gone from my back just by changing *three* products.

If what you want is performance, just get the Macbook Pro. It's almost as slim as the current Air at this point. Why whine about the Air trying to be what it exists for?

(And on the flip side of the coin, of course, there's the ARM supporters. We do need *some* performance, guys. Currently, Broadwell Y is the only realistic option, and it's a damn fine one.)
