Now do you understand why they have created money losing services like Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade?…it’s to build a launching platform for a revolutionary user experience when they provide immersive content exclusive to Apple, exclusively on Apple Glasses. Immersive shows, movies and gaming a new way to consume and interact with entertainment. I’m willing to wager the Avatar 2 film will be the first movie available for users with Apple Glasses. Just like avatar 1 film introduced the world to 3D theatrical experiences, Avatar II will be the next push in a new way to enjoy film watching.

A device like Apple TV seems more appropriate to tether the VR headset, but it’s probably not powerful enough for now. Maybe an Apple TV Pro/Gaming console would eventually be the perfect complement with this headset
I was on the same mindset but after think it through I really don’t see it tied to the ATV. You see, you need the ATV close to a TV to enjoy it. But with the VR headset there is no need for a TV. Additionally if it’s tethered to an ATV you’re tied to enjoying the headset only on you living room or bedroom, whereas if it’s tethered to an iPhone you can enjoy ir wherever you want.

Not surprised it would require an iPhone, its basically an accessory. I wouldn't get my hopes up about it, since it sounds like another HomePod/AppleTV hobby.

If comfortable enough, this could replace all displays. Imagine life where all displays are in your glasses (headset for now):
  • your TV can just be an AppleTV box
  • your phone can just be solid brick with no display
  • your watch needs no display, just a sensor for hand movement
  • your computer is just a keyboard, and you can have as many screens as you like
You can start having displays for things that never had them. QR codes can pop up quick displays of web pages. AirTags can have info bubbles showing their battery level..

Now I'd hope that we eventually have an open AR Display protocol so you can use your glasses with multiple devices (Raspberry Pi display!) but that will probably take a while.
What will actually happen is ads will show up everywhere and you’ll never be able to turn them off or not pay attention to them. In any case, the human brain isn’t designed for that level of constant stimulation. There will be consequences to society.

Makes sense. The iPhone/Pad/Mac would be the computing unit, and and the headset itself would contain as little hardware as possible in order to improve efficiency. In essence it could mostly just stream the data from the said device.

I believe there's been the odd business case for use of Google Glass, a different product in a way I'd guess, but I really, really struggle to see appeal of VR or 3D glasses used for TV a few years back.

AR on a phone or tablet, yeah, I kind of get it. I use the Ikea app every once in a while to kind of gauge where some furniture might fit in a room, or use the phone for measurements, but outside that, I'm not sold on awkward headwear.

Show me the convenience.
Read the book Ready Player One (or watch the movie) and you will see where the puck is going to. This will be huge

The glasses will be $3,000 because you'll need to buy the high end iphone, apple watch and pair of glasses to even use them as intended. Great for those who shell over that kind of money to Apple every two years, not so for someone who just wants to use a pair of VR glasses. They probably wont work without logging into iCloud either. Don't forget the added monthly fee to access almost essential services as well. Can't wait till these are on the used and refurbished market with some more down to earth prices.

If apple arcade games work with it and the controls were good, this would be YUGE.

I would ♥️ that so much.

Better not be just a hobby. Apple has spent billions in R&D on this project. We're talking iPhone level R&D. If this is just a hobby, that's an abject fail.

I wonder how long it will be until we get VR devices with 100% peripheral vision. I'm so disappointed in the little lenses you have to watch through in most devices.

Don't own an iPhone (I use Android), so that gift of of an Apple Watch I recv'd was worthless and re-gifted. Great idea, Tim! Make products that people can't use unless they're fully invested in Apple's ecosystem. Once I abandoned my iPhone for Android, moving completely away from Apple products became so simple.
So why are you here if you hate Apple products? Seems kind of odd.

OK, I'll bite. What is the use case for these?
It depends on how they target it really.
Technical fields could benefit, being able to overlay schematics, measurements, info in real time while your working for example.
Medicine too, having the glasses feed info to the surgeon.
From a more consumer standpoint there are already apps that do some of this for things like museums, where you can use your phone to get additional information about what you are looking at.
This would be really useful for traveling, especially in countries with different languages. Obviously being able to have signs and such translated to your native language would be incredibly convenient. You could get directions that are displayed in your field of view while you walk around. Points of interest could be displayed. Historical scenes could be overlaid on modern locations. Here in Japan (and lots of other places) there are numerous ruins, it would be fascinating to be able to see models of what they used to look like and be able to switch between those views.
Athletes could use them to display information during their workouts, similar to what the Apple Watch does now but being able to see it without taking their eyes off what they are doing.

In the end it will depend on the price point and ease of use of the decides what areas make sense for it, but there are many potential options.
