The problems i have with the iPad are not Hardware-Related.
I would buy the most expensive iPad Pro directly from the shelf, if they would finally release better software, optimaly the possibility to switch between Desktop Mode from Mac OS and Handheld Mode from iPad OS.

Otherwise i wont buy an ipad anymore.

To be fair, in engineering terms, 1mm may as well be a mile. Even 0.1mm is significant. You can see light through a 0.03mm gap. Probably much less.

A millimetre isn't that small. It's also a pretty sizeable percentage of 6mm 👍
I doubt it will, but imagine if the 12.9" iPad Pro gets the same 22% reduction in weight as it's getting in volume.. That would knock a third of a pound off! Would be sweet.

Agree with all the comments who say WEIGHT is the key metric for the 12.9.

The 2018 version I'm still using is on the limit, but the later ones, for me, just tip the balance being too heavy to hold for extended periods. If they can shave 10% (or more) off the weight of the 12.9 - HAPPY DAYS.

This is my 5.9 mm iPad compared to a chopstick which is 5.1 mm in the circled area. Personally I don’t think that will be a problem… The difference is about the thickness of two fingernails.

Which begs the question: Why does apple want to make it thinnner if it's unoticable? Instead give us more battery life, or make it more durabable, or add an extra feature - really ANYTHING would be of more real-world use than one less .1mm of thickness

It isn’t unnoticeable. It makes it lighter which is quite important for a tablet. Especially with the Magic Keyboard which is very heavy to counter balance the weight.

If only we had a device that attached the keyboard to the tablet, making it easier to balance...

Said device could also have a less restricted OS that allows you to do much more than iOS.

I wonder if someone will come up with it.

And back to the topic at hand, Apple please fire Ive's disciples too. I'm tired of this thinness fetish.

I dont want a laptop to replace my ipad. I want an iPad to replace my laptop. And for that i need a mac os mode with attachable Keyboard and so on.

Why is this a usecase so hard to understand?

I'm extremely happy that the new iPad is getting thinner, which I hope also means lighter.

Thinness and light weight are much more valuable to me in a portable device than an extra few GB of RAM or more CPU/GPU cores, or even an extra hour or two on an already very long battery life.

I also hope the edges are more curved too to make it more comfortable in the hand.

Me too. Having a screen thin enough to detach from a MacBook and use as a tablet would be awesome!

Lighter weight is always a plus for the iPad. I would also like to see them finally bump the battery life to 15 hours.

So, will *this* be the iPad Pro that finally "unleashes" the power of the M series chip? I keep hearing that every imminent release of a new model.

in short - YES

it will be on the similar computational power as the M1 Max and have roughly 60 % of it's GPU power and porerbaly dramatically more power in the neural engine - which is important for the ML stuff on it.

Don't forget that there is no ventilation or possibility to dissipate more than a few Watt of heat and you have to find a good balance between battery life and computational power.

My maxed out 2018 iPP is still doing fantastic in 2024 - and it is not the slightest bended as many have predicted.

The new one will be at least 2x faster and has a brighter screen and 4x the storage capability.

The question if you like the GUI is a very personal one and probably prove to interpretation. For me the 20118 iPP has served me extremely well. A killer machine - still after five years of daily using it

Much thinner. And easier to bend...!
for low gross motor skilled people - definitely yes - my 2018 iPP is still in great shape after traveling with me roughly 5x around the globe in that period.

Just a great machine.

Mine is too. It's just a joke. Should have added "/s" I guess.

That means iPhone could be 5mm thick as well if battery wasn't a concern. And we will also end up with some cable where the end of the cable ( Plug + Rubber ) will be thicker than the thickness of iPad.

I fore one would like the iPad to be thicker even if this makes it 10-20% more heavy. It's more stable, easier to hold, could have a bigger battery, won't have cooling issues, could have better speakers, might be cheaper to manufacture, would be easier to open and repair, could have a cheaper screen and other cheaper components. I never felt my current 10.5 inch iPad pro is too heavy or too thick. I have it in a case anyway. Also, instead of investing resources to make it thinner I'd rather have them invest resources in giving it a full Mac-OS version as soon as you attach a keyboard with trackpad.

These need to be thicker. 10 hours battery life just isn't enough
No - these need to be thinner and most of all lighter - 10 h battery life is a complete work day and anything longer has a power plug in a car or an airplane or a hotel or a conference room close by.

if the worst comes to the worst a 250 g powerbank will both charge the iPad AND the iPhone and I‘ll only have to take it with me when my day is exceeding 10 h of constant work - which is rare on iPad use cases

edit - in case I can safe 60 g on the iPP I‘d gladly trade it for less duration of the battery - a PowerBank can stay in the bag and I don’t have to handhold it constantly

What a loss for Apple
