OH THANK GOD! My 2021 11" iPad Pro has been great in every way, except for how its blunt, landscaping-paver-like thickness makes using it a baroque horror of demon spawn and damnation, flames burning the flesh from my hands and the torment of 10,000 damned souls wailing in my ears with every tap on the screen.
Sir, do you need your iPad to be exorcised?

so, then it seems can be glass on both sides.
did they dump reverse wireless charging idea? with this thickness it is most likely impossible...

Thin is good. They need to be put into monster cases anyway. The thinner they are to start with, the thinner the end result after being put in a case. Apple designs them for case use.

If Apple is making a 12.9" LCD iPad Air, it's because they plan on ripping people off to an extreme with the OLED version of 13" iPad Pro. Soon the Air will be the only affordable way to get this device size.

So…. the iPad… Air… will no longer be the thinnest one? 🤓 (Technically this is true today, but the Air is a smidge lighter.) I hope with this generation, Apple simplifies the lineup. I find it confusing between the Air and the non-Air iPads. At least this seems to add more differentiation to the Pro models.

That’s great, I can’t wait to see how much weight they’re able to shave off the 12.9” Pro. It had become prohibitively heavy after the 3rd-gen IMO

I’m hoping they use titanium just like the iPhone, may add some weight but the trade off is worth it in my opinion.

Need to remember the iPhone titanium is only the outside rim of the phone, the chassis plate is aluminium fused onto the titanium.

Apple is planning to update the iPad Air and iPad Pro lineups as soon as March, and the new iPad Pro models will be significantly thinner according to dimensions shared by 9to5Mac. Citing sources with knowledge of Apple's plans, the site claims that the larger version will be more than 1mm thinner.

iPad-Pro-OLED-Feature-2.jpg

The current 12.9-inch iPad Pro measures in at 6.4mm thick, but the new model is said to be 5mm thick. As for the 11-inch iPad Pro, it is currently 5.9mm thick, while the updated version is said to be 5.1mm thick. Both tablets may also be slightly bigger in size.
  • Current 11-inch iPad Pro - 247.6mm x 178.5mm x 5.9 mm
  • Upcoming 11-inch iPad Pro - 249.7mm x 177.5mm x 5.1mm

  • Current 12.9-inch iPad Pro - 280.6mm x 214.9mm x 6.4mm
  • Upcoming 13-inch iPad Pro - 281.5mm x 215.5mm x 5.0mm
Such a slimmed down body suggests a notable design change, which is enabled by an even more significant update -- OLED display technology. OLED display panels are thinner than LCD panels, allowing Apple to cut down on the thickness of its tablets.

Alongside the iPad Pro, Apple is expected to introduce two new iPad Air models, including a larger 12.9-inch version for the first time. The larger iPad Air will be almost the same size as the current iPad Pro, measuring in at 280.6mm by 214.9mm by 6mm.

Apple is limiting OLED display technology to the Pro lineup, so while the 12.9-inch iPad Air will be similar in length and width to the iPad Pro, it will be thicker because it will continue to feature an LCD display.

All of the new iPads are expected to have Apple's M3 chip technology, which was first introduced last year in updated MacBook Pro models. We haven't heard specifics about an event, but we are expecting something in late March to early April.

Terrible idea. The current ipads already run hot under basic workloads like using safari. You'll be lucky to run the homescreen if they make any thinner

Do you know how small of a difference 0.8-0.9 mm is? 😀
Umm... about 1mm?

So the iPad "Air" is going to be thicker than the iPad Pro... Well that makes sense...
I think they are going to have to drop the "Air" moniker.

It's always interesting to me how values and meanings change with (product) evolution.

It's thin enough. Leave it alone and pack some legit sizes batteries in these iPhones and iPads.
Please no. iPads are heavy these days and the battery is already good. Even if the battery were bigger, I promise you wouldn’t notice the difference between charging weekly or charging biweekly.

Making an ipad larger while at the same time thinner...come on Apple stop trying to bend the physics...you dont have the engineers to do that, we already saw it in the past...when you will have F1 engineers and aerodynamics kind of people you can try...

That's soooo cool. Cant wait to replace my iPad Pro 2018 12,9. A few weeks ago i went to an apple store because the battery seemed to get worse. But they said i still have 92% of the battery left.... thats amazing, don't you think? i got the iPad pro on the first day, and i dropped it so many times. still no bending and no Problem at all. i think the battery issue i have, is because if im writing a lot with the apple pencil, it gets really hot and needs more CPU Power. Besides that, an OLED is also amazing. Cant wait for true black Pixels.

It doesn’t sound like much of a difference in thickness, but a minor change can have an impact. For example, I had the 2018 iPad Pro 12.9” which was 5.9mm thick. I bought the Magic Keyboard case for that iPad. Then I upgraded to the 2021 iPad Pro 12.9” which is 6.4mm thick. As I put a skin on the back of each iPad and a glass screen protector on the front, my MK doesn’t close fully with my current iPad, yet the difference between them was only 0.25mm. I can get the MK to close if I remove the skin and glass screen protector, but I’m not willing to do that as I favour the protection more. My MK mostly stays on the desk and I take my iPad places with a Smart Cover.
I’m aware of the rumour of a new MK this year, so the thickness of this years model probably doesn’t matter so much (assuming that we need to buy new a MK), but it can matter in the following models if we are to continue using the same (keyboard) cases.

will get the maxed out version immediately.

just did some rough estimations - bast on the assumption, that the volume decrease will yield in similar weight reduction we can estimate the iPP 11.1" to be roughly at 400 g instead of the 468 g today.

We have BYOD and thus I can get rid of my love/hate relation with the Intel-Company-PC - that alone os worth the money

But seriously:
  • 4 TB
  • 16 GB RAM
  • 400 g weight
  • similar computational performance as my MBP M1 MAX and roughly half the GPU pefroamnce
  • lasst version of 5G
  • WiFi 7 perhaps?
That's going to be a really really really nice portable device.

With respect to bending - I own my current 11" iPP since 2018 and it is still perfectly flat and flawless in usability. It traveled with me roughly 5 times around the world. It was very wise to buy it with 1 TB and 6 GB RAM that time 🤗
