i'm still waiting for more gas pumps to include apple pay. there are select few, but i haven't been to one yet.

I'm a bit surprised that Apple Pay is coming to Germany. Contactless payments are not such as popular as in Poland or Dennmark. They do prefer traditional way to pay

If you search on Google "Apple Pay Italia", you will find one support article. Date: 10/12/16

I`ve found the other articles as well.

I'm from south west Germany and everybody I know there uses Geldbeutel. I'm living in Berlin now since 2012 and everybody I know there says Geldbeutel either.
Because you're living in a bubble, damn Swabians and their Wecken everywhere.

"Coming soon to the 5 local stores that support Visa!"

Since the EU capped credit card fees last year, most stores I go to already adopted credit card payments. I've used them at Aldi, Lidl, Rewe, Kaufland, DM, Rossmann, Thalia, Hornbach, IKEA, Media Markt, Saturn, … (Though sometimes cashiers are extremely surprised when I use contactless payment. They didn't even know they had it. Obviously it's not widely used, yet.)

Contactless payment already is extremely convenient. But I'm looking forward to slimming my wallet a bit more.

Also who the f under 60 uses the word "Portemonnaie"

My 20-month year old does … Although she doesn't always get all the vowels right.

Haha that explains it. I am from the South and have never really been to the "North" besides Berlin

This map seems wrong. I am from Bavaria / Franken and we say Brötchen" or "Brötle"

Speaking of words. The first time i heard people say "Eierkuchen" i was like wtf is THAT?

I do. I'm well under 60, it's the word that I grew up with, it's the most elegant word for it and it's also the word that describes the function the best: "carry money".

Surprisingly you're right, it comes from the Latin word portare. I always thought of port like in "harbour for money" and "export/import". Well, the whole point of Apple Pay is not to carry anything extra around, so we now need a new word anyway.

I came to the conclusion that, when it comes to Germany, it comes to Italy as well. Support articles have got the same date.

So, those support articles are maybe a hint.

Did the same for the Netherlands, the articles aren´t there yet.

NL: https://support.apple.com/kb/index?...pport_searchbox_main&locale=nl_NL&q=apple+pay

IT: https://support.apple.com/kb/index?...pport_searchbox_main&locale=it_IT&q=apple+pay

GER: https://support.apple.com/kb/index?...pport_searchbox_main&locale=de_DE&q=apple+pay

The new, inactive, site for Germany can´t be found, in the search, anymore.

Geldbeutel is an almost historic term, I guess you are not a native German speaker!?

Another former Swabian confirming that Geldbeutel is indeed the word that everyone there uses. Portemonnaie sounds like something your perfumed great-aunt might say.

Forget ApplePay/Android Pay/whatever, Germany needs to get comfortable with card payments first. I always feel on my visits back that it will be the last place on earth to become a cashless society.

I've been reading this website for some time but I had to make an account to specifically point out that no self-respecting Bavarian would call it either of these words. Semmel or bust

Wallet is either Gebbeidl or Briafdoschn.

Which is a good thing because giving up cash means giving up freedom. There is no harm in peaceful coexistence of cash and card payment.

good thing Franken is not Bavaria :p

I wouldn't read too much into this. The image for "Asia-Pacific" is effectively entirely blue, when in reality it's only available in five countries.

The problem with that is, that Apple has lost the momentum it started with introducing it. After several years "news" is not news anymore. Adoption rate of Apple Pay may be slower because of this. Though I can imagine German banks being the major problem here. It's just bad, though, for customers and Apple to be so late.

Hi,

I would say Germany has an excellent contactless payment infrastructure.

Most gas-stations, supermarkets (even discount markets), fast-food places & other restaurants have POS-Terminals that support contact less payment. Also the acceptance of credit cards skyrocketed in the last year since the transaction-fees are now capped on 0.3% of the purchase total.

Even the toilets at gasstations next to the highways have contact less payments these days (thank God, like I carry around a bag of coins with me when traveling south)

I noticed that, when I say to Siri "Apple Pay", this command opens Wallet. This didn´t happen before in Germany, or?

About time! I see this as the only way vendors here in Germany can be "convinced" to upgrade their terminals for contactless payment methods...

It is very likely that most TPVs used are already contactless ;) We have had in Europe NFC payments (via contactless cards) for a very long while in case you didn't know... (check for the contactless symbol: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contactless_payment#/media/File:Universal_Contactless_Card_Symbol.svg)
Obviously... supporting Apple Pay is simply a matter of upgrading the software of such terminals... nothing major.

And still... Apple Pay is as useless as not carrying a second card or cash with you, because not all banks will be suporting Apple Pay, and even so not all merchants will be doing so. Hence, in the end, we have a nice fragmentation of payments system relying on that same thing: cash or card. Apple Pay is just a nice layer on top of a card but not a replacement as of these days and will not be for decades (check how long it took to switch from magnetic band to EMV chip and still... the magnetic band is there on the cards...).
