Because you're living in a bubble, damn Swabians and their Wecken everywhere.I'm from south west Germany and everybody I know there uses Geldbeutel. I'm living in Berlin now since 2012 and everybody I know there says Geldbeutel either.
"Coming soon to the 5 local stores that support Visa!"
Also who the f under 60 uses the word "Portemonnaie"
Since the EU capped credit card fees last year, most stores I go to already adopted credit card payments. I've used them at Aldi, Lidl, Rewe, Kaufland, DM, Rossmann, Thalia, Hornbach, IKEA, Media Markt, Saturn, … (Though sometimes cashiers are extremely surprised when I use contactless payment. They didn't even know they had it. Obviously it's not widely used, yet.)
Contactless payment already is extremely convenient. But I'm looking forward to slimming my wallet a bit more.
My 20-month year old does … Although she doesn't always get all the vowels right.

Surprisingly you're right, it comes from the Latin word portare. I always thought of port like in "harbour for money" and "export/import". Well, the whole point of Apple Pay is not to carry anything extra around, so we now need a new word anyway. It's the most elegant word for it and it's also the word that describes the function the best: "carry money".

This map seems wrong. I am from Bavaria / Franken and we say Brötchen" or "Brötle"
Forget ApplePay/Android Pay/whatever, Germany needs to get comfortable with card payments first. I always feel on my visits back that it will be the last place on earth to become a cashless society.
I've been reading this website for some time but I had to make an account to specifically point out that no self-respecting Bavarian would call it either of these words. Semmel or bust
Wallet is either Gebbeidl or Briafdoschn.
Which is a good thing because giving up cash means giving up freedom. There is no harm in peaceful coexistence of cash and card payment.
Speaking of words. The first time i heard people say "Eierkuchen" i was like wtf is THAT?
wtf is that?
Hi,
I would say Germany has an excellent contactless payment infrastructure.
Most gas-stations, supermarkets (even discount markets), fast-food places & other restaurants have POS-Terminals that support contact less payment. Also the acceptance of credit cards skyrocketed in the last year since the transaction-fees are now capped on 0.3% of the purchase total.
About time! I see this as the only way vendors here in Germany can be "convinced" to upgrade their terminals for contactless payment methods...
