Apple most certainly does walk into a pre existing category of offerings they just do so with a better product. They couldn't compete with Qualcomm on 5g because the industry was partially organized around technologies Qualcomm had patents on the entire time making it nearly impossible to design alternate hardware.

getting to 6g first is the only way to have a foot in the door of potential new hardware designs. the tech for 6g doesn't even exist so if you want to design modems you will need to be present when the standards begin.
You misunderstood what I wrote — I said that basically Apple doesn’t get into a category just to offer what is already being offered by another company — they want to offer more, something better. In terms of a modem, I don’t think they’re aiming to make one that operates at the same level as what Qualcomm makes — they must be rethinking this very important component and figuring out how to make it better.

They primarily just want to save money and I think you have apple glasses on when it comes to the very ordinary things they do.

Perhaps. And yeah I think Apple repackages a lot of tried and true technology and features in such a genius way that it looks like they invented it. The truth is Apple is all about the experience and less about the raw tech IMO

Sub-6GHz 5G is for the most part LTE but a little bit faster. And low band 850-600MHz 5G is a little faster than LTE and it is basically LTE since when it is deployed as it is now 5G Nonstandalone it actually requires your phone to connect to both LTE and 5G which sucks down more power and can actually reduce coverage. Right now its little more than an opportunity to make a logo appear in the corner on your phone
Depends on the carrier and how they are rolling out. It’s not an LTE, but ATT and Verizon went cheap by just repurposing some of the LTE with minor speed bump as 5G.

It’s good to hear Apple hasn’t given up. It would be terrible if they gave in.
In almost every interview Johny Srouji states repeatedly in an almost defeated voice that Apple is not a chip company. They need to get over that and embrace it. They are a chip company. That attitude is why they lost their chip team that Qualcomm bought. They have eager designers that wanted to embrace that and left to form their own chip company when Apple balked at what they wanted to do. And Apple created their biggest chip competition in the process .
Johny, Apple is in the chip business, the sooner you realize that the better.

The team Qualcomm bought hadn’t delivered anything, they are way behind schedule other than vaporware slides. Apple doesn’t need to be a chip company, they already have core Apple Silicon chips needed for the devices. Any auxiliary chips like modems/gps and others aren’t big deal. Sure if they can save money, but it isn’t gonna make them win or lose.

"100 times faster than 5G"...
in other words...
"100 times faster than 4G" 🫠
Yeah nah. 100 times faster than 4G for a second or two, then ramping down to slower than 4G. At least that's been my experience of 5G here in Australia. Thus I turned 5G off. It's not as if 4G isn't well and truly fast enough for high quality video streaming. I'm still not at all sure why I'd need 5G on my phone.

I'm surprised by the poor 5G experience expressed by many people in this thread. My 5G experience in the United States has been noticeably faster than LTE. I'm talking over 400mbps download speeds on 5G vs up to 50mbps on LTE.
