It’s possible Apple’s realized its timeline for in-house 5G modems is still far-enough off that it makes more sense at this point just to shift those engineering resources over to 6G development. It’s amazing what a stranglehold Qualcomm has over the 5G space. It’s still too critical of a component for Apple not to want to bring it in-house, but it’s clearly a difficult technology to develop.
They’ll still have to handle 5G, so I don’t think this makes much sense.

My partner has had hers for 30 days, never had an issue with wi-fi!

Maybe it's just your WiFi? I have a 15 Pro Max, I haven't had any issues. If anything, I'm getting the max speeds in my home more frequently.
I've had WiFi issues with my day 1 15PM. It works fine when I am near the router in the living room but painfully slow when I am in another room. Never had the issue on any of my previous iPhones (14PM, 12PM, etc.)

Agreed. Hopefully, the modem they want will come of this.

The most discouraging thing that I saw on the announcement that no one seems to be talking about is: Apple is publicly, posting job offerings for system architect for the 6G modem. Searching for a system Architect now sort of implies you’re already behind the game.

One would’ve hoped that Apple would’ve been tuned in enough to the industry to be able to recruit a system architect without having to publicly post ads for one.

Publicly posting a job listing for high-level position like a 6G system architect seems a little bit like desperation to me

Apple's work on implementing 6G cellular connectivity on its devices appears to be ramping up, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

In the latest edition of his "Power On" newsletter, Gurman explained that Apple is increasingly turning its attention to 6G, even amid its widely reported difficulties developing a custom 5G cellular modem.

In 2021, the first highly specific Apple job listings with reference to 6G emerged. Now, a further job position for a Modem Systems Software Architect has appeared on the company's website that seeks an individual to "coordinate the design and modeling of a 6G reference architecture." Gurman says the listing is part of the company's growing push to hire engineers to develop 6G cellular technologies.

Carriers are already working on next-generation 6G networking. In late 2020, Apple joined the Next G Alliance, an industry group set up by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) that seeks to "advance North American mobile technology leadership in 6G and beyond over the next decade, while building on the long-term evolution of 5G."

Some analysts say the technology could enable speeds more than 100 times faster than 5G, but the extent of its enhanced performance in the real world is yet to be seen. 6G is not expected to emerge on consumer devices until around 2030.

Referenced Gurman's name for 10 words that basically stated the joined a standardized group ob 6G and hiring engineers to make an article sound bigger than it really is!?

Lol

Macrumors and everybody else in following tech really needs to get off that fan train. Nothing tangible or relavntly important usually comes of this.

Just stick to his last minutes bytes as those are worthwhile and accurate.

This news bytw is simply early standard moves by any tech company that makes phones.

How about they work on making an efficient 5G modem first? Qualcomm's modems are still incredibly power inefficient.
Not only that, let’s work on expanding coverage for those without proper 4G. I keep hearing that AT&T is lacking in certain areas with 4G/LTE, meanwhile other networks have expanded their coverage or better.

I guess Qualcomm had them sufficiently locked out on patents to compete in 5g space

you only stand a chance if you're there from the beginning

I think doing so without infringing has proven difficult, but they may have found a way to do so with 6G that may explain why they are focused on this now.

What about T-Mobile?
And please expand on “dropped the ball”
Verizon and ATT went for big bang approach, and repurposed part of their overcrowded 4G/LTE for a small bump in speeds. The roll out was multi year plan, which means poor coverage till they finish the higher band roll out. T-Mobile took a more practical approach of rolling out Low/Mid band along with the Ultra capacity simultaneously. Sprint Acquisition gave lot of spectrum to T-Mobile for mid to lower bands. I see 400-600 mbps on ultra capacity and around 50 mbps on lower bands. It’s not as good as ultra capacity which is closer to the tower but better than 4G. I think Verizon and ATT will catch up TMobile in a year or two.

I have yet to find a use for 5G on my phone. No idea what I'll do with 6G. I often find 5G is faster than server bandwidth in a lot of instances, much like my home gigabit connection.

Sure, I can connect directly to an Amazon S3 bucket at 980Mbps upload and download. But a lot of things seem to crap out around 400-500Mbps, for instance Xbox downloads. And both of those use cases are on my Mac and on a game console, which are both on wired ethernet, and the only places where I'm downloading or uploading 20-150GB at a time. I have no doubt I could live quite comfortably on 5G for the next 10 years, especially since I use content blockers to get rid of most of the cruft that sites attempt to download. Now if Apple would actually put 5G or 6G into a Mac, that would be a different story. But they don't, and besides, you would get throttled by your carrier.

So 6G makes no sense to me for the next decade. I do web development and design, and websites haven't gotten significantly heavier in the past 10 years since retina displays came out. Some of the frameworks can be heavier, but if you properly optimize at launch and cache things it's fine. Where things can slow down are all the trackers that companies like Google use and ad networks that a lot of sites use, but even when I turn off 1Blocker they all load pretty fast on 5G and even on LTE most of the time. What else is really taxing your phone? If you have iCloud uploads turned on for cellular it just happens in the background.

5G has already failed to match the marketing hype leading up to its deployment. I expect the same for 6G (if it's like 5G's "same thing but better/faster/higher capacity" improvements).

At least one company is already tossing around the term 10G in their marketing. It's not even cellular but I have met several people that believed the hype and asked me if they needed to get that since their current phone is stuck on old fashioned 5G.🤣
Another one is people assuming they have 5G because their Wi-Fi router supports 5 GHz.

Dave: We need to short out some nanobots.

Bjorn: Awesome. How?

Dave: By prematurely rolling out 8G

Bjorn: 8G? We're only on 6G now.

Dave: Hah, so much to learn. We're always a couple of Gs ahead of the curve. Time for a rummage in the toy box!

by the time Apple makes 5G Modems, Qualcom will be shipping 6G.
Apple is buying 5G modems from Qualcom.

After so many years? Since when did Apple start working on their in-house modem compared to Qualcomm's decades in this field?
Apple purchased Intel Modem group, Apple is working on cellular modems as per the news.

Well for me 4G has been considerably faster than 3G, but we're 2 years in with a 5G network and so far it has been perhaps the biggest letdown tech the the last decade.
it is just marketing gimmick, every few years they will upgrade cellular modems o that people will buy to get 6G experience in few locations and most of the time most people will still be using 4G LTE.

I wish the providers (👀 AT&T) would work on getting better 5G coverage before heading to 6G. When 5G works, it's plenty fast, except, in my area, it rarely works. There's an entire area of 2 square miles, in a suburb, where I can't even get messages out.
Sub-6GHz 5G is for the most part LTE but a little bit faster. And low band 850-600MHz 5G is a little faster than LTE and it is basically LTE since when it is deployed as it is now 5G Nonstandalone it actually requires your phone to connect to both LTE and 5G which sucks down more power and can actually reduce coverage. Right now its little more than an opportunity to make a logo appear in the corner on your phone

This was my thought exactly lol. It seems a bit beneath Apple to do this....I mean realistically you should have an army of people who know how to do this behind closed doors and find the right people but Idk maybe 6G is going for the optics of being a truly open and revolutionary standard...I can't help but wonder if maybe Im reading into this too much but maybe this is a message to China? As in 6G will not include your BS?

My theory is that Apple has been focusing on 6G for years. The reports that they haven’t progressed on 5G may be true, but maybe because they haven’t been focused on 5G. Apple doesn’t walk into a category just to offer what is already being offered — they obviously want/need to differentiate in some way — this could be different tech than 5G, or maybe power efficiency.

Apple most certainly does walk into a pre existing category of offerings they just do so with a better product. They couldn't compete with Qualcomm on 5g because the industry was partially organized around technologies Qualcomm had patents on the entire time making it nearly impossible to design alternate hardware.

getting to 6g first is the only way to have a foot in the door of potential new hardware designs. the tech for 6g doesn't even exist so if you want to design modems you will need to be present when the standards begin.

This is probably the most accurate take. Apple probably has enough money and resources to catch up with 5G eventually, but by the time that happens the investment is probably unlikely to pay off.
