The relationship between the iPad and its software is very confusing. The iPad released in 2018 was to only able to realise its potential when iPadOS was announced. I get the feeling the 2021 version is on a similar trajectory. Whilst the full capability of these machines is exciting, its very strange to seem them held back by software that isn’t updated until after its release. In my opinion, this punishes early adopters.

It seems like every article I read about Apple, whether about hardware or software, is predicting some big announcement at WWDC 2021. Interestingly, none of these predictions are coming straight from the horse's mouth.
It never comes from the horses mouth until they‘re ready.

Why are people surprised? The current OS has never had that much memory to work with. I fully expect it to open up with 15. This really should have been expected and not big news. IMO.

Aaaand, Apple got what they wanted; a LOT of hype and excitement generated by the early HW spec bump and release… now all they have to do is not let down for WWDC and 15.

I'm not sure that upping the memory limit for each app is the right solution to take maximum advantage of the extra memory available in the latest iPad Pro. It's not that simple.

On iPad OS, apps in the background are killed whenever the foreground app is asking for more memory (virtual memory is absent on iPad OS by design).

If your workflow is based on running 2-3 apps simultaneously, it is probably more beneficial to limit the apps to a maximum of 5GB each and be able to switch between them instantly rather than being able to use all the memory in one app and then having to wait / lose progress when you switch between apps.

Seems a bit backwards to be announcing capable hardware only to artificially limit everything vis software, but hopefully iPadOS 15 brings some serious changes.
It’s far easier to sell the idea of more capable hardware than current OS versions need than it is to say “here is this great new feature…that none of our hardware supports”

even in the earlier days of iOS, they wouldn’t package the new features for the unannounced iPhones in the betas. They’d save those for the iPhone launch.

so, business as usual. Apple nearly never announces or responds to these stories until they have an event.

Again understand the only reason it has 16gb ram is because the 1tb and higher Mac has that built in the m1 chip they just used the same chip to save money that’s it
You don't even need to buy 1TB storage on Mac to get 16gb. you can base model that has 256GB ssd and upgrade to 16GB.

Honestly, a M1 MBA for $1199 comes with 256gb ssd and 16GB ram. Great deal, unlike the iPad Pro.

Spend 1799 for the iPad Pro to get 16GB lol and u can't even use it.

Apple tricked customers in spending more money on the higher tier iPad for no reason it was all a pr stunt, iPadOS never needed 16gb ram and also they only used the m1 as it’s cheaper to all use same chip in all products it was never about giving the iPad more power

Those who already bought the hardware knew well in advance that the OS is still the same and that that needs to be adjusted to make use of the power of the device. This article merely confirms that.

Makes buying Ram on the M1 iPad useless at this point.
They guy that pays $2400 for the 16GB M1 is the sucker.

Almost nobody buys the high-end iPad Pro for the RAM. They buy it for the storage.

The RAM amount doesn't even show up on the store page. The storage amount does.

This is part of why Apple doesn’t really advertise how much RAM iPhones and iPads have.

I think they did mention the RAM at the event this time. And the tech specs say it. But it's still hardly front and center.

I'm getting tired of posting this, but once again Steve Jobs would be screaming and ranting and firing people.

Yes, I'm sure firing people is a very effective way of changing software.

(The firing will continue until software improves?)

WOW ! I wander if Android 12 has the same limitation?
Will this be fixed in a future IOS?

I love reading messages like this!!

no they cant the 1tb m1 chip has 16gb ram thats how its made for the Mac etc, they cant change the chip they are just using the same batch and like I said that m1 chip has 16gb ram on 1tb and higher thats it
Trust me mate, after wwdc ,you’re going to be drooling all over that iPad like these android fanboys are drooling over their 3 years software updates for their phones. 😂

Because they wanted customers to think they needed the higher tier, also it’s just the ram on the m1 chip so they have left overs from the Mac etc that’s why. It’s cheaper to use the same chips, it was never for the iPad to need more power

They only have this ram because the m1 chip has it in the chip and it’s cheaper to use the same chip it’s not for more power it’s just to make you think it’s more powerful iPadOS is not needed for that ram, wwdc will not change anythibg

People need to understand on the macbook the 1tb comes with 16gb ram it’s the same m1 chip the iPad was never meant to need the more power, it’s just cheaper for apple to use one chip in all devices that’s the only reason the 1tb one has 16gb that’s the way the chip was made, people must stop thinking ipados15 will change anything, it’s a bit of a scam from apple

Again understand the only reason it has 16gb ram is because the 1tb and higher Mac has that built in the m1 chip they just used the same chip to save money that’s it

Seriously, you need to stop with this garbage as there is a fundamental flaw in your assertion ...... the flash storage is not part of the M1 SoC package, they are separate chips. So why would Apple use an M1 16GB SoC instead of an 8GB SoC? Surely they would just use the M1 8GB SoC paired with 1TB of flash storage chips?

They are CHOOSING to pair the 16GB M1 SoC with 1TB and 2TB flash storage.

Feel free to read the teardowns of the M1 Macbooks which list the flash chips as separate chips.

You're welcome.

This is exactly why I returned the 11' (along with it heating up constantly). I bought the M1 for a better experience with Procreate and thanks to kind folks on this forum, I learned it's not there yet.

Thanks MacRumors for creating an article about this (why I liked it.)

I'd be happy to try another 2021 11" or 2020 12.9" Pro once more RAM is allotted for Procreate and other apps to use.
