Useless? So you only ever run a single app?WOW ! I wander if Android 12 has the same limitation?
Will this be fixed in a future IOS?
Makes buying Ram on the M1 iPad useless at this point.
They guy that pays $2400 for the 16GB M1 is the sucker.

Do not buy a tech product based on the promise of future software updates
This just tells me that we’re in store for some big iPadOS news at WWDC. It doesn’t make sense that Apple would add all of this headroom for nothing.
Except:Agree - there is 0% chance Apple gave the M1 a 16GB configuration “because the chips were lying around from M1 Macs” and they could dupe customers into paying for it. Apple is super stingy on RAM, especially in iOS/iPadOS devices. There is something on the horizon but the question is what? Upping the RAM available to apps or expanding multitasking perhaps, releasing Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro, and XCode for iPad? That would certainly justify configs up to 16GB but I am dreaming they stun us with a big announcement like Mac Apps running on the new IPP or even Big Sur dual boot. It’s unlikely but then again NO ONE predicted RAM would increase from 6GB to up to 16GB.
Yet, this model will fly off the shelf. 5gb seems to me to be reasonable for an ipad...it's not a mac.WOW ! I wander if Android 12 has the same limitation?

Or get a heavily discounted 2020 iPad Pro. Other than the miniLED display, it's the same thing.Massive difference from 2018, M1 chip, 8gb/16gb ram, faster ssd, wifi 6, mini led and more.
Feel like you purchased your iPad hoping that macOS will be coming to the iPad, this will never happen, not in the near future at least.
Best thing you can hope for is some pro features and pro apps being added at wwdc.
If that isn’t enough for you, then you did the right thing returning your iPad 👍
Apple is about the user experience and they don't want people fretting over cpu, ram, chips etc. They just want their customers to use the device.Exactly. Apple is all about margins, they aren’t going to add more expensive RAM for no reason. This is part of why Apple doesn’t really advertise how much RAM iPhones and iPads have.
$2400 iPads are not going to be "flying off the shelf".Yet, this model will fly off the shelf. 5gb seems to me to be reasonable for an ipad...it's not a mac.
Correct.Seriously, you need to stop with this garbage as there is a fundamental flaw in your assertion ...... the flash storage is not part of the M1 SoC package, they are separate chips.
Apple really wants developers to bring their Mac apps to iPad. Putting Logic Pro on iPad would show developers how they can make complex applications work on touch. Also, who is buying an iPad Pro without a keyboard and track pad? Perhaps the biggest limitation is screen space. But I would love to have Logic Pro to do some editing or recording in the field without having to use a middle man application like Garage Band. It would be awesome to seamlessly go from a Mac to an iPad to do work.I don't know why people think that Logic will be coming to iOS. Garageband is already "Logic for iOS". Apple is not going to add all of the fiddly bits from Logic that don't translate well to touchscreen.
Apple sees enough of a market to produce an ipad at that price point. A model at this price point may be targeted for corporate consumers more than individual consumers.$2400 iPads are not going to be "flying off the shelf".
I, for one, bought an iPad Pro with a smart folio and without a keyboard and track pad. and have no inclination to buy heavy accessories. The onboard keyboard and portability are much more important to me and I have a M1 Mac mini for heavy lifting.Apple really wants developers to bring their Mac apps to iPad. You have some valid points but Apple isn't going to offer an extra 8GB RAM because the chips were "ready to just pop in". It's an embarrassment to Apple that its Pro tablet (which can cost up to $2400) can't run its Pro apps. Apple makes video editing software but yet they have to demo a third parties product at their hardware launches... embarrassing. At the very least the 16GB option I think almost guarantees that Final Cut Pro is coming to iPad Pro - those 4K video files will need that RAM and yes it's a small sliver of the iPad users who need that but they are paying dearly for the capability since iPads with 16GB cost more than MacBooks.Except:
6 to 8gb was a natural progression from 6gb in the 2020s.
We also know that higher storage models need more RAM for data transfer etc from the older models. The 2018 models showed that where the 1TB had 6gb while the rest 4gb. It is not the first time the higher storage tier had more RAM.
Maybe the storage type here for 1 and 2TB need more RAM, and they want to make sure everyone has at least that 8gb.
It may be cheaper in scale to use the 16gb M1 variant than create a whole new one for an ipad version (1tb an 2tb) that are likely less popular models overall. It could in fact be a money thing, no one has any idea.
At the end of the day 99%+ of iPads sold or currently out there in use are 8gb of RAM or less. Do you really think more than 1% of sales an n owners hands of all iPads are 1 and 2TB 2021 models? Apple or devs are not going to do anything solely for a slim margin of users on a 16gb RAM model. That isn't realistic.
The more logical answer is the cost of scale thing since they already had a 16gb M1 ready to just pop in without spending tens of millions of dollars on a new setup just for 2 lower volume iPad models. They likely saved more money giving more RAM on those minority of sales here than a new fab setup.
That doesn't mean pro apps aren't coming that need 8gb. But this pipe dream of Mac or a huge OS improvement "because they offer 16gb" are very unlikely. You are still dealing with the most common denominator which are 4-8gb models that you have to cater the OS to run on.
That’s exactly what I have. A base M1 MacBook Air with the 256GB SSD and 16GB of RAM. I can always use external hard drives if I run out of storage. I can’t upgrade RAM later on.You don't even need to buy 1TB storage on Mac to get 16gb. you can base model that has 256GB ssd and upgrade to 16GB.
Honestly, a M1 MBA for $1199 comes with 256gb ssd and 16GB ram. Great deal, unlike the iPad Pro.
Spend 1799 for the iPad Pro to get 16GB lol and u can't even use it.
Are we looking at the same Apple right now? The M1 iPad Pro reveal was ALL about cpu and chips and all that jazz, and nothing about the user experience.Apple is about the user experience and they don't want people fretting over cpu, ram, chips etc. They just want their customers to use the device.
And of course Apple is about the margins. They are a for profit company and one of the fiduciary responsibilities of the CEO is the revenue and profits. So there is that.
