This is your original quote: "Exactly. Apple is all about margins, they aren’t going to add more expensive RAM for no reason. This is part of why Apple doesn’t really advertise how much RAM iPhones and iPads have."

It starts off with some supposition/speculation. This makes the quote about ram seem logical, when in fact it's an opinion based on an opinion. Two opinions form a conclusion that is fact based? So I challenged those opinions about Apple being user experiential and not margin driven.
I would guess that Apple's margins are even higher on the 1/2 TB models with 16 GB than on the lesser models.

Thanks for bringing this issue to people's attention. This badly needs to be addressed. With the 5gig cap it's hard not to feel like this was a case of false advertising.
False advertising would be if Apple said "Now open a 15 GB Pages document, you know you want to!". It isn't as if the RAM can't be used. On the 16 GB model you could have three extremely (for an iPad) memory intensive apps in memory at the same time.

But hopefully the silly whining drowns out the exaggerated "blooming" photos with the wrong exposure taken at 100% brightness off-angle 😂

Apple tricked customers in spending more money on the higher tier iPad for no reason it was all a pr stunt, iPadOS never needed 16gb ram and also they only used the m1 as it’s cheaper to all use same chip in all products it was never about giving the iPad more power
How did Apple trick anyone? Did they promise anything more with the higher spec versions?

I mean technically, it’s not RAM. It’s unified memory. Just to correct MR and a lot of people on this forum. :)

That being said, I do hope that iPadOS 15 utilizes the full power of the unified memory that‘s in the devices. Fingers crossed for WWDC

Problem with your reasoning is … if Apple was going to leave the Ram hindered, they couldn’t advertise the Ram at 16gb. That’s FAR worse than the “throttling” Apple did to keep the device from shutting down. I’m surprised there aren’t more people mad at this already.

I guarantee one of two things. Apple opens up the power capabilities of iPad Pro with full use of Ram and even pro level apps OR a BIG lawsuit.
Bro, other apps use RAM.

Makes sense. There are quite a few 2020 ipad Pros out there, with 6GB ram. There's also all the Airs and basic ipads, which presumably are supposed to run ipad software.
That being said, let's see what happens in another year....

Right... Tricking customers is not a good way to run a massively successful business such as Apple. Your view is not grounded in reality.

No no no. The full memory CAN BE USED by the user. Just not by a single app. This means, for example, that if you are playing a game using a lot of memory, your safari tabs won’t need to all be reloaded.

And even the per-app memory limitation will go away in a couple weeks.

I’m glad I’m returning mine
Return away. Are you really impacted by this limit? Really? I process 20 minute 4K video, I process 150 MB photoshop files. This iPad Pro is about 25% faster than my MacBook Pro 16 maxed out and 100% or more faster than a well spec’d ASUS Windows 10 laptop.

What?

No, it’s absolutely RAM. The architecture of the system is such that there is a unified address space. But that doesn’t mean the RAM isn’t RAM. It’s absolutely RAM. In fact, it’s standard RAM chips, in standard RAM packages, packaged within the M1 package.

I bought a 1 TB iPad Pro….and it came with 16GB. Nothing in anything Apple said promoted the value of 16GB. Nothing. They mentioned it has 16GB. NOTHING. I rewatched the launch video. NOTHING about the reason to get 16GB of memory. NOTHING.

There was NO TRICK. Come on you haters, bashers, complainers, and fear mongers.

Why did most of us buying the bigger configuration buy it? For the storage. For some, app restarts. Apple did not say “fewer app restarts” as a bonus. I have had that happen. Annoying. But not a really big issue for me.

I was able to process 4K video and huge photo files on my old 10.5 IPad Pro and my wife’s old 12.9 iPad Pro. It was not memory issue then…..and now it is? Why?

I don’t use the photo application in question that discovered the limit.

I do use layers with Photoshop and some other applications. I personally have never created a file with 110 layers.

For grins and giggles I fired up Photoshop, created a photo file, pasted elements into 100 layers.

What do you think happened? Ran out of memory and it all paged. Slower than molasses. Nicely spec’d MacBook Pro 16. Lots of memory (32 GB). The resulting file? 18 GB. Massive.

Regardless, I’m sticking with my 2020 12.9 this time around. I opted for the M1 MacBook Air instead and I am very happy with my decision.
There is night and day performance between my wife’s 12.9 and my new M1 12.9. But its a lot of cash for sure.

After Covid, crappy times for 18 months, work load that is amazing. Screw it. Splurge and enjoy life.

Complain less, do more, relax more, get things done better.

Yes, many cannot do that. And there are awesome alternatives to them. My son’s Ipad Air is pretty amazing. Faster than my wife’s 12.9.

The point of my post was that Apple isn’t going to spend the money on putting more RAM in a device that it’s not going to use. That was the point of my post and it was plenty logical but for some reason you felt the need to explain to me exactly what I already knew, we are literally arguing to the same point.

Very wise decision to return it. I was saying to everyone for many years
do not upgrade if you already have any iPads or iPhones already. Only buy new tech every 10 years to avoid disappointment. The preceding was a PSA - public service advisory.

The above is much better said then: "apple is about the margins". Which is true, as we all are concerned about margins even us individuals, but as a guiding principle of corporate behavior look at the companies that put the money over the customers and see where they are now: Enron, Bernie Madoff etc.

I see. Thanks for the clarification. should have read the article more clearly.

A non iPad Pro specific feature that I want in WWDC is to force apps to use landscape mode. It's very irritating when apps force portrait mode all the time.
