As a man who is considering preordering the SS gold color 44mm Series 4 I started wondering - is a gold-colored watch too “smartass”/tacky for a man to wear on a daily basis?

What are your thoughts? Do you dislike the gold-variant and why? Why do you prefer the other options?

I'll be making that decision myself. I think gold could be great, but I also like black. I personally think and have always thought that rose gold looks way too pink to be a daily driver as a guy, but that's just my opinion. It's not about masculinity, just personal preference towards not liking a pink type of color. I'd have to see the gold in person to make a decision.

With the exception of very modest/delicate jewelry, I tend to see gold as ostentatious and flashy.

But to each his/her own. You're not wearing the watch for me.

bottom line: you do you. i doubt anyone will care other than yourself so make yourself happy.

for me? i think gold for me would feel good in limited situations and not an everyday watch and certainly not with many bands so no, i wouldn't go with gold. but what makes me happy is uniquely me.

I want a gold one but not willing to pay the SS prices. That leaves the gold aluminum but I'm not a fan of the gold aluminum since S3. S2 had a yellower gold which I liked better... Space grey's my next choice then... will probably get the nike version since it's the same price and I like the band better

Just had a quick browse on the net and it seems to be pretty difficult to pick up a 42mm s3 gold for a decent price in the uk i guess sites are yet to adjust pricing considering the announcement of s4 today. And apple have discontinued the gold in s3 now.

I think the SS Gold Gold will look great with the right band. For example the Gold Milanese (sp) and some earth tones perhaps. For me the question is kinda like the Black Stainless; how many bands will look good with the gold?

The black is superb with some bands. The Silver is very versatile working with a lot of bands. I think the Gold will be like the black in that it looks great with some bands, but not as versatile as the Silver. This is great though for folks that want just a few great looking bands.

I'm curious what bands that others think, will make the Gold SS look great.

I want to know how the gold color is applied to the stainless steel. Is it plating, which would scratch and could flake off in time, or is it something more durable like the DLC of the space black?

I have a space black series 0 and it's still nearly perfect even after being worn daily since release in 2015.

I don’t think any silver, gold, space black, watch is tacky. Everybody has different preferences and appeal what they prefer, that’s all that matters. I think the gold stainless is really nice, and I have been asking for that model color for quite some time, which I plan on ordering.

I totally agree! You should just wear what YOU like, it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, especially random people on the internet lol

Totally agree with choosing/liking the different colors is subjective. Although sometimes trends and maybe factors such as work environments makes a color more preferable than others at a given time and place, which is the cause of my dilemma.

What do you do for work if you don't mind me asking?

You're not a true man unless you can pull off a pink shirt anyway!

Three main considerations as always with fashion.

1. Can you pull it off - ie. do you know what you're doing and how a particular style is matched with other pieces along with your personal style (physical appearance, grooming etc)

2. Confidence - if you've got it, you can wear anything you like, without consideration to anything else.

3. Appropriateness - there will always be certain times and places where your behaviour including fashion choices will clash with a culture/sub-culture (certain workplaces especially - at all levels - working class workplaces can judge you for sticking your neck out with aspirational choices just as much as a magic circle partner might judge you for wearing your top button undone).
