I'm a little confused based on some of the posts here and Apple's web site.
If you have AppleCare+ on a 6 Plus, it says the replacement cost is $79 (up to two times). But then on another page I see that a screen replacement cost for a 6 Plus is $129.
If my screen/glass on my 6 Plus is damaged and I have AppleCare+ do I pay $79 or $129?

You can chose. Pay the $79 and it counts as one of your two replacements - and they give you a totally new phone. Pay $129 and they literally take your phone out the back and change the screen and give it back to you.

I got Apple care for all of my iPhones over the years and never made a claim until this year. In fact, I made two claims in two months. So it's just really good to have that coverage just in case.

I'm not even handling mine much till I get a skin on it to make it grippy and they do offer some impact protection. Best of both worlds.

You kids need to learn a thing or two about business. They didn't increase the price due to abuse, because there are no statistics on this either. They increased because they could, plain and simple. Why do some of you get this idea that Apple is looking out for every consumer? A business never looks out for their consumers, it's just a tactic to make people believe that a company is behind them, when in reality all the company cares about is your cash. They increased the price because majority shareholders demanded an increase in revenue, maybe to offset some other costs such as transportation, assembly, research, not because people abused the system. Apple is still making tons of money on applecare, otherwise they would've discontinued the program. Majority of people still buy applecare but never use it, shouldn't this be called abusing the system by Apple too? Technically if you bought it, didn't replace your device and your applecare ran out without Apple offering you a new phone, Apple is abusing the system.

Some people need to lose this notion that Apple is some kind of a magical company that takes care of consumers.

Yes, Apple increased AppleCare to increase profits. Simple. They did it because they can. They don't run a charity, they are in this to make money. They'll charge $99 for replacements soon. And then $129. And when AppleCare sales drop, then they'll stop increasing prices. It's called "supply and demand".

I love Capitalism.

It doesn't cover cosmetic issues. So the phone actually has to be damaged to get a replacement, scratches on it isn't enough to get a replacement.

From my experience they will take the $79 and just replace the screen. Looking at it closely you aren't that much better off from the people who have not already spent an extra $99 on AppleCare+.

I always see people on the forum saying "Go naked! Just buy AppleCare+ and do a replacement at the end of 2 years" instead of simply buying a case to protect their phone.

Apple recently increased the price of replacements from $49 to $79 per replacement. I assume that this was because Apple created AppleCare+ for a different reason (as insurance for when people genuinely damage their phone, and not simply for people to get a brand new replacement for cheap).

Since more and more people were simply buying it for reasons Apple didn't intend for (simply to go naked and get a replacement right before 2-years are up) and driving the cost up for Apple, they raised the replacement price.

It's kind of like car insurance, if everyone bought car insurance thinking "You know what? I'm just buying car insurance so that in two years time I can smash my car and get a brand new replacement!" then the cost would rise tremendously.

I'm curious though, when these people who simply buy AppleCare+ to go naked (knowing ahead of time they will get a replacement) cause the replacement prices to continue increasing, at what point would AppleCare+ become too expensive and no longer worth it for you?

I buy AC+ and my phone goes naked....and I haven't had to use it yet (knock on wood). As long as my phone works and the screen isn't cracked I don't care what it looks like at the end of 2 years.

And to answer your last question, I have teenagers with iPhones so AC+ will never be too expensive. :p

I don't think it's excessive if the terms of which they return their phones is accepted. When Apple sells their phones, they don't market to put them in cases; that's the owners prerogative.

I, personally, haven't "just" replaced my phone but I certainly hope I could if I wanted if it fit with the terms of replacement.

I hate cases. I do not buy my phones to resell them and I spend more than two years with them. I want to look at what I've bought, not hide it away in a case.

I'm careful with my phones and yes I bought AC+ (which is actually in it's last few days of coverage) but not because of what you think. I bought it to protect myself from OTHERS!

I can control what I do. I cannot control the clumsiness, inattention, or outright irresponsibility of others in my life. One particular person I work with has no regard for personal space or property.

I have used my benefits exactly twice. And none of it was ADH which would have cost me $79 that I don't have. Both tmes, were phone replacements. The first was for a bad mic and the second for a bulging battery. I've never used AC+ to recompensate myself for any drops (and there have been a few) or cosmetic blemishes. In fact, I didn't want to give up my last phone. But when the battery is pushing the LCD out of the frame, what are you going to do?

No, I didn't get AC+ because of what you're thinking! :(

Why do people keep feeding the trolls?

THIS. I completely agree. I can't shake the feeling that people who so proudly proclaim that they "go naked" with their iPhones are driving up the costs for the rest of us, by being so careless as to not take care of their phones.

It is suppose to be put in a case? Then why does Apple even bother making it look visually appealing?

This place is funny. People fired up claiming that Apple is the best ever and makes the most beautiful phones, but they need to be put in a case, and now the consumer shouldn't expect to put a 6 plus in a pocket without damage. Nothing screams premium like needing a case and a holster to go about your day.

It is just a phone. Apple is just a company. Everything they do is about the bottom line and shareholders, your are delusional if you think otherwise. They don't carr why you are making claims on AC, they have actuaries that have done all of the calculations. They MAKE money on AC+.

Insurance is generally for major expenses that would be almost catastrophic if you had to pay out of pocket. Such as home insurance, car insurance, medical. Financial advisors will tell you that you should not pay to insure what is otherwise something you can generally afford.

A few hundred bucks for a phone? If you can afford the phone in the first place, you should "self insure". Its like in Best Buy when they try to sell you insurance for the DVD player you just bought -- don't bother.

I have never bought applecare and my iphone 5 is naked. I intend to continue with no case when I buy the 6 or 6 plus too.

If the phone requires a case to survive a typical user and typical wear and tear, it should come with one. And the engineers should be fired.

No, they jacked up the replacement price to $79 because too many people deliberately damaged their iPhones in order to get a replacement and thought nothing of it, as evident on this forum.

Or maybe price of phone / components of the newer tech phones was a factor as well compared to when this was initially released.

No, iPhone component costs have been consistent starting around $199 each year and this is also reflected in retail/subsidized prices. The middle trim (currently 64 GB, formerly 32 GB) has been consistently $299 subsidized.

If I buy a iPhone 6+ sealed new in box from say Ebay or someone local, can I call and get Apple Care + on it?

Apple raised the replacement price over time because they could, not because too many people abused the system.

This. I feel many over-estimate the production cost of these devices. Simply a case of Apple seeing an avenue for more revenue.

And I see nothing wrong with that. Capitalism.

No business prices things whatever they want because they can. They want to sell as many AC+ as possible.

Not so much. Ten years of retail experience tells me otherwise. Google the Chivas effect. Not entirely the same thing, but the principle is the similar.

Well, what you're suggesting is insurance fraud, plain and simple. I bought Applecare because I don't like cases, but I also don't want to have to pay full replacement price for my device if I happen to damage it. I never had any intention of intentionally destroying my device at the end of the two year cycle in order to get a new one. That would be illegal. It's unlikely that you'd be caught, but nonetheless, it is against the law.

Coincidentally, however, my iPhone 5 battery had always been crap, from day one. I took it in to the Apple store a couple weeks ago and they ran a diagnostic, determined that the battery was near the end of its useful life and replaced the battery. That alone made the applecare worth it. They also noted that if the battery replacement didn't improve the performance, they'd replace the unit. After replacement, I noticed a yellow blotch on the screen whenever the battery heated up. In addition, the edges of the screen were discolored. I'm not sure if they damaged something when they replaced the battery or not, but I brought it in and received a brand new replacement. Can't beat it.

And with Apple dropping the price of the 64 gb iPhone 6 by $100, it was a no-brainer to buy Applecare + this time also. It is well worth it.

I'm pretty sure Apple farms out the insurance to a third party anyway. And just like any insurance company, they lose money on claims but make more money on premiums.

Yes. When you activate the phone, it will establish a valid purchase date and you will have 60 days to buy Applecare. Keep in mind that Applecare is country-specific. So don't buy it in the US and expect coverage in another country.
