So the Macbookpro does not fit your needs so they are in the past? Bizarre post for me. It is more than obvious your needs differ to what they make, but that doesn’t mean it is not right for a lot of other people.

Never said they weren't, equally Apple's created nothing of real interest for years, nor is the Mac and OS X it's focus which is clearly evident. Apple's not even trying with the Mac, all it want's to do is maintain revenue targets...

In all honesty, I had hoped the 3rd generation fixed the issue, and it appeared too, so I plunked down around $$ for a 15" MBP - mere months into ownership, reports of keyboards started trickling in. For me the hand writing was on the wall. I could hope that my keyboard wouldn't fail but I would be on pins and needles (remember the 2018 model is not part of the repair program) or I could sell the laptop sooner for more $$ and move on.

I chose the latter, because, it seemed silly to treat a laptop like an 8th century Ming vase. Its meant to be used and handled, I now have a laptop that is more durable, more functional, faster, cooler and has a far superior keyboard. I can't say I'll never buy a MBP again, but right now, I'm content with moving off the mac platform.

What model are you using instead, if you don’t mind me asking? Need to be ready, because this years potential release decides whether I am on ornogf the Apple computer train for the foreseeable future. Writing for a living makes the keyboard the most important part, and I hate the feel of their latest models.

You see, the issue is that a non-insignificant group of users, to whom I happen to belong, actually prefers the butterfly keyboard. It’s more precise, faster and softer. Every time I have to go to an older-style keyboard I make tons of typos and my fingers hurt. If they decided to go to the older keyboard, I’d be disappointed.
Would people be happy with a keyboard similar, if not identical to, the Smart Keyboard?

I’d be fine with that.

I opted for the Thinkpad X1 Extreme.

Something like the Smart Keyboard with a membrane covering it, or even some kind of haptic system with raised key bumps would be the best case scenario for the new one I think and would make me consider buying one again - the older keyboards were far, far superior in terms of feel and pretty much everything else but I doubt we're going to see a return to those unfortunately

True, sadly as Apple has exemplified by far it's arrogance overrides it's customer's needs...

I have a good feeling about this next piece of hardware. I think it's going to be the MBP everyone has been waiting for with all the fixes. I don't think this is speculation since there are a couple of reliable sources. Not to mention, Apple has received so much sh_t regarding performance of late I think this will be a turning point. This 16" is going to happen. Same with new Mac Pros.
When can we expect this release? Summer? Fall? Winter?

I don’t want to waste time waiting for something that is not confirmed or even announced. However I am literally right about to buy a custom order MacBook Pro. Is there anything legitimate about this beyond wishful thinking and speculation?

I could just wait or buy an iMac instead for the mean time. But I want to work now. Not in 6 months.

That's anyone's guess. Looking back at the 2016 model, which is the last major update, it appears that they announced it in WWDC with the it being available a couple of weeks later.

The 2016 redesigned Macbook Pro was announced at an October event not at WWDC.

The only problem I have with this is it’s like in the camera world. As soon as you say “I’ll wait until the new one, it will be awesome!”. You wind up never actually producing potentially great work because you are always waiting on the next thing instead of making the most of what is available now.

The only reason i'm waiting is because of the keyboard issue. Other than that i would of brought the Air. If however Apple fix it first in the Macbook Pro i will buy a 13" Macbook Pro with Touch Bar, rather than waiting for them to bring a fix/new keyboard to the Air.
