Honestly? Yes.

It’s the first “top end” iPhone to use aluminium since iPhone 7/8, and they were priced at today’s entry level prices.

The iPhone X using stainless steel was one of the reasons it justified a premium price point. They have now reverted to using the “cheaper” material, while keeping the same premium price.

I understand abandoning titanium (they did it with the PowerBooks/laptops) but not going back to the premium stainless steel for the premium models smacks of them cutting costs IMO.

I think Apple are trying to change things this year - Pro models are not about nice design, but pure power and battery life.

The Air is the new “sexy” phone, with most but not all power features. Enough of the good stuff for prosumers, but not enough for “actual” pros. I’m glad it’s keeping the premium material, and polishing it for good measure.

Hope they continue to offer a model that has that level of polish going forward, as the Pros become less sexy and more utilitarian.
Can’t imagine the weight of a stainless steel pro max. They need to release an iPhone X 2.0 with modern internals.

Animosity against the Air? I’ve seen more against the Pros at this point! I still think they’ll be more popular, the Air won’t be the ‘it’ phone.
Ha, I think you are right - the Air will be a hit when regular people come into the store and handle it.

And here we are, without even touching it, we are already hooked on the Air.

The Air is a pathway phone. It’s either half of a foldable or the roadmap for the Pros going forward. For this year it’s just a “let’s see what is possible” phone.

I am only disappointed they didn’t offer a Natural Titanium finish on the aluminum. And I am glad they didnt go back to stainless steel. Steel was the worst material they used because it was heavy.

If I remember correctly, almost a decade ago apple acquired licence for "Liquid Metal Tech" and was doing research on it. That material was supposed to be revolutionary in terms of strength and looked premium. What happened to it?

I think Air will be a hard sell for people like us.
1. 1 camera
2. Mono speaker mono video recording.
3. Mediocre battery life
It will be a hit for high school prom queen who just want style on their phones without caring about tech specs

I have an iPhone 13 (work phone) and a iPhone 16 Pro (personal phone) and I can tell you the 13 feels light and cheap by comparison to the 16.

I just hope that Apple has a better aluminum phone with the 17 Pro, than it did with the 13.

No. Durability tests showed titanium models may have been more major bend and dent resistant, but scuffs/scratches/small dents were seemingly as easy to cause as before.

13 pro or 13? Big difference all the basic models since the 12 feel cheap and very light the stainless feel felt more premium but much heavier.

I hope this move to the pros doesn't lower the quality the pros hold up better over time compared to the basic models.

thank you for posting this.

its always interesting in a fun sort of way to see these kinds of ways that are done to somehow prove or show that an iPhone is either more or less durable.
but we have to remember its not a test and can not be described as a test.

having said that, in my own "confirmational bias" way of watching this one, i can say

1 this @EverythingApplePro is quite interesting.
in this video, straight out of unboxing the Blue one, before he did his attempt to destroy it, he noticed and pointed out imperfections in the surface finish of it. statistically, and accidentally, he has given us some insight as to just how frequently out of the box imperfections on the Pro and Pro Max are probably happening.

this concurs with a lot of posts in Macrumors of finding nicks in the surface finish straight out of the box. we should believe these unfortunate buyer's claims.

im sure apple is aware of this however, and will definitely replace it free of charge, but probably only within the normal 14 day window.

2 his successive drops of the models shows that that the new Ceramic shield is remarkable at protecting the glass parts until totally excessive heights. apple has a great process with this new shield. we should be able to have confidence in it.

3 aluminium shows dings easily. duh.
titanium helps the Air to stay in tact.

notice i did not say titanium "doesn't show dings".
the titanium used is polished, so dings do show.
but most of those dings won't prove to be catastrophic to the Air. which also seems to be the case even for aluminum in the Pro models, but for a different reason. the Pro and the Pro Max use a unibody construction exclusive to the Pro models.
this is the first time a unibody construction has been used in any iPhone.

either the Pro or the Air still would be a good choice depending on your needs.
just be sure to understand what you are buying and how those materials will come to reflect the way you use your iPhone.

for me personally, im very happy with my choice of the Air. with titanium frame and ceramic shield.
i have to factor in a battery replacement charge every 3 years, i am thinking. but for me, its light and that's what is the most important to me.
