I think 1 top band for the clasp and then 2 bands (s/m) (m/l) for the bottom band

I hope they really do come with two bands in the box. I'm gonna snag my husband's smaller black band.

Even on the assumption that there are 2 full straps in the package..... This would only work if both of you have the same size watch (42mm or 38mm). If different then the extra band won't fit (presume will be too narrow/wide).

That's kind of my dilemma now. I'm getting a 42mm sport watch for me and another one as a surprise birthday gift for my girlfriend. I was going to get her the 38mm one since I think it'll be better proportioned, but if it comes with two complete bands I'd get her the larger one so we can share bands.

I hope this band thing gets a defintive answer before the pre orders go live.

Yeah, the strongest argument for the one size fits all fastener scenario is it has only 38mm or 42mm stamped on it but no S/M or M/L like on the bands with holes. If there are two different size fasteners, there'd be evidence of this. I'm actually extremely surprised nobody has confirmed this (and whether or not the Space Gray on the Watch is the same color as iPhone/iPad Space Gray) considering that over 100 journalists have seen the hands on models in person.

I agree with your thinking about the bands too. I'd just hate to get the smaller size for my girlfriend and then have it come with two full bands. The lack of a definitive answer is frustrating. I actually emailed Tim Cook and asked him about the band issue. I haven't gotten a reply and I doubt I will, but it was worth a shot.

I am assuming that there are 2 complete bands of each size (length) supplied BUT there are versions for the 38mm and 42mm (width). Therefore a s/m band supplied with 38mm will not fit 42mm and vice versa. There are 2 separate products listed on Apple Store for each of the 38mm and 42mm sport bands which would support this.

Yes, your second assumption is correct and this has been confirmed. However, nobody has confirmed whether or not your first assumption is correct.

Yeah I know that the 38mm and 42mm will each have differnt bands. That's why I want to know how many band pieces are included. If my girlfriend and I will be able to each use a differnt length band I'll get us each the 42mm watch. However if they only come with three band pieces I'll get her the 38mm since I think it will fit better. I'm just trying to maximize band options for us.

Yep - I understand. Though personally I would put a more appropriate size watch ahead of an extra coloured strap - especially as the price difference between 38 and 42 will pay for 1 extra band set in any case.

I think that is what I will finally end up doing. 42mm for me and 38mm for her. If the watches come with two full bands I'll just use one of those band trade sites that are popping up.

No

I'll be buying one for working out as well as for the weekends, playing with the kids, going to the park, etc.

Seriously? You're talking about a difference of $50 for 2 watches and 2 bands if you go ahead and get her the one you think is a better fit.

$850 = $350 (38mm) $400 (42mm) + $100 (2 extra sports bands)
$800 = $400 + $400 (2 x 42mm)

I totally understand wanting to save $50, especially if the $750 for 2 watches is already a stretch. But if you REALLY think the 38mm is a better fit for her... Seriously? Something else you need to consider is her wrist size. Mine is 130mm. There is no 42mm watch band, the sports band included, that would fit my wrist tightly enough for the sensors to actually work. I have to buy the 38mm, no choice.

Also, there is nothing preventing you from buying yourself an extra band and keeping your costs at $800 and letting your girlfriend buy her own spares if she chooses to. Another thing to think about, there are already websites popping up where you send them your spare and for $6.00 they send you the color and size band you want in exchange. It's actually genius as long as there really are 2 complete bands in the box.

Don't get me wrong. I think it's really generous of you to buy your girlfriend the watch as a surprise gift. It would be that much more meaningful if you were actually thinking of the best fit for her, and less about being able to share bands.

What's the website?

You know what's really funny is that I hate wearing watches when I exercise. I exercise outdoor, on a roadbike, so I don't like to have a tan line on my arm. I have a casio G-shock for when I swim at the beach, but I keep it in a bag on my bike while my ride to the beach.

That kind of defeats the purpose of the apple watch.

Getting one because I prefer them to leather and metal.

That's a bit vain. Just alternate wrists.

The tan line isn't the main reason why I don't wear it. I feel like it is constricting me. I tried wearing the casio g-shock watch, it has a rubber band, and my arm would sweat and I have to constantly remove and wipe it off. If I don't do that, I get itchy after a while. So I won't bother wearing it until I get to the beach. That's how I know when I need to get back. When I swim, the water flows thru the watch anyway. Before I ride back, I wash it off as I shower myself there. Lately, I haven't bothered to bring the watch at all, since I would just repeatedly walk to my bike when I need to drink some water, and I can just check my iPhone for time.

When the weather outside is 80 to 85F, and I ride the bike for 3 hours and sweat a lot (lots of water!), it will get itchy.

Unless Apple's band does some kind of miracle...

This is what I wear. It's designed to take a beating. I don't see Apple Watch doing that any time soon. People are too worried about scratches, scruffs, and shattered display from bumping a table or walking thru a door. I can slam it on the ground and stomp it with my feet and be more worried about hurting my feet than damaging the watch. Worst case, I'm out $40.

I don't think they are using such weak magnets.

But it depends on your training. If you are just running, or stationary, it might be okay... but can I jump rope? Can I play sports like squash or soccer? Don't think so. I do HIT (high-intensity interval training) and I don't think that a milanese will work with that.

Note for people who want leather bands:

Image

Quality leather doesn't comer waterproof, because that hides the beauty and softness of the leather.

If you want to trade that for waterproofness, you have to buy waxes like that, either in cream, or soap bars, or even in spray and apply it yourself. It's easy.

That kind of product works well on smooth/polished leather surfaces but many leather bands I own have unfinished interior surfaces that are more likely to absorb water.

Also might be a little irritable on sensitive skin since many products are for shoes/coats that have little to no skin contact

Wearing the heavier metal bands doesn't make sense to me. The rubber bands, and particularly the black one are nearly weightless which means your body will stay in perfect balance. They are made for sports. I can't see myself spending $150 for a leather band for a $350 watch either.

No, the rubber bands are actually heavier than the SS bands except the link bracelet. Don't believe me? Look it up.
