A $1299 netbook.

You can't make this stuff up.

If you want to spend $1299 to check your email, this is definitely the laptop for you.

It certainly does much more than that...

Not everyone cares about 4K..

Give me something portable that I can use with Xcode/to practice programming/use Logic Pro X for small orchestrations - and I'm happy.

The 12" does all that.

He's just trying to get a rise out of people.

Agreed on 4K. I have no displays that'll do 4K and no current plans to buy any that do. Heck I haven't even bothered to get an HDMI adapter yet for my rMB to use it with either my mini's 27" WQHD display or the 24" 1080p I use with my work laptop.

What update?

I see a Pink model. I guess young girls should be happy this morning?

The typical childish approach to debating a topic:
- Stomp your feet on the ground and demand repeatedly that your take is right and everyone else's opinion is both inferior and incorrect
- Ignore and discount mounting evidence that your opinion is in-fact false
- Failure to acknowledge facts that render your opinion incorrect

Congratulations BJ, you've passed the test.

Was hoping this would have Thunderblot 3 and an i7. Wanted to get it to work an the Razer Core eGPU. Too much wishful thinking on my part. Thankfully I have the Razer Blade Stealth :)

You may be a jackass at times but that just made my day and I agree.

This laptop is still an overpriced entry level device with a horrible keyboard.

The keyboard doesn't feel that bad when I tried it out for a bit in store, but other than that, can't really comment much about it, haven't had the chance to use the keyboard for an extended period of time.

From the reviews I've read, seems like it gets better after a week or two when you get used to it.

- No HD FaceTime webcam
- No extra ports
- No MagSafe charger
- No glowing Apple logo
- No price drop

Even for a quiet refresh, they're still extremely half-assed about it

I think it was a sensible update and the morphed MBP and MBA will be the laptop which has what you're looking for.

Every time Apple updates something, there's always a group of complainers. In this case, people need to realize this is just a simple spec bump, and not a new product line. This is still a new device and was only released last year. You will be getting a faster processor for the same price. Also, this computer was made for portability at the expense of ports. Users who need more ports/capability have plenty of options to choose from but the laptop will be thicker/heavier.

I think this is a better device than the iPad Pro, mainly because of the operating system which allows you to actually do serious work.

My question is: for everyday tasks, will the user be able to tell the difference in speed between last years model and this years?

The glowing Apple logo was so much nicer looking, it seems the design team hates any sort of external lighting. They removed battery indicators, LED charge indicators and everything else the lights up on their laptop. Same with the iPhone they could have put a notification LED on the phone and they didn't.

Great. Get Apple to update the Air already. That's all most people have been waiting for.
The fact they DID update the base line Air today is bad news for the air. Not looking likely they do a WWDC refresh of the line after that. Seems its truly EOL.

I think it's pretty safe to ignore BJ and Dogslobberer's opinions and assertions in future - both have consistently presented opinions as facts and when clearly proven wrong, start arguing semantics and claiming that fundamentals such as a faster processor, faster memory and bigger battery don't constitute an update...

I don't know what to think about that. They are certainly dragging their feet.
They did a little bump in March with the new track pads for Air and 13 Pro, then June for 15 Pro.
One month later they bump the RAM in the 13 Air.

They will either combine the Air/Pro or keep them separate. Really hard to say (I think they will keep two tiers above a single macbook). Hard to say when they will do anything that is a real redesign. Fall likely we'll get something. What though? I hope not more disappointment.

All I cared about was whether there would be an improvement in battery life or not, since I don't have reliable access to outlets when I'm out and about. Even though it's only one more hour, it's still better battery life than the first generation for the same price.

Besides, I won't be able to upgrade my iPad for some time, so I'll need a portable Retina display for reading on the go.
Not sure why you care battery life so much, while you can charge off pretty much any portable batteries

4K is great and important for it to be used as "the only computer"
4K = retina 1080p, so when you hook it up to a big screen (come on, 12inch is too small for stationary, serious work), you still get clear image

Can I recommend to you the USB-C Anker portable batteries? They'll double the life of your rMB and they're cheaper than the price of a second power supply.

Only i7 has hyperthreading; i5 does not.
Mobile i5s have hyperthreading.

Uh, Skylake? Remember certain people were posting that Apple would just skip Skylake altogether and wait it out until Kaby Lake?

Is it still possible to get the 2015 models at the $999 price point anywhere? Wasn't another retailer price matching Best Buy at some point?

Should've gotten the wife one when I had a chance. Worse comes to worse I guess we'll be spending a few hundred more later this year on the new model.
Why not go for the refurbs? They are going for $919. I have owned refurbished Macs before. They look just as good as new. The main difference is that they ship in plain white boxes instead of the fancy Apple box.

I'm in the market for a new portable laptop but these are super expensive for what they deliver.

I was ready to pull the trigger on this model...but I'm having second thoughts now. I feel, like next years will be a bit more significant, and might last me a few years longer. It's still progress though :)
Plus I can't justify the price of it here in Australia; $2689 for the 256gb m7 version...yikes haha

Yes they're expensive for the cpu/storage/memory combo. That's not really the point of the rMB though; you're paying to get that set of components squeezed into in a 2lb OS X laptop that fits in many bags tablet pockets.

Yeah I bought an air in 2012 for $1400. But that device felt like a real computer running Photoshop and illustrator. This looks beautiful but very limited power. Lovely computer to look at though. Fell in love with it at bestbuy.
