I just received mine last week as a gift, now I wonder is it worth it for the hassle to return and get the new one instead...not sure if they would need to do a full refund then charge it again or what. And not sure if they will have any on store this week prior to my 14 day return policy is up. Sigh. Decision, decision.

Very worth it if they paid full price and you can do a straight swap.
Another user just mentioned they contacted Apple about return for the new model and they said 30 days. So go do it.

I was ready to pull the trigger on this model...but I'm having second thoughts now. I feel, like next years will be a bit more significant, and might last me a few years longer. It's still progress though :)
Plus I can't justify the price of it here in Australia; $2689 for the 256gb m7 version...yikes haha

I would say look for the previous model at a good discount

Yeah I bought an air in 2012 for $1400. But that device felt like a real computer running Photoshop and illustrator. This looks beautiful but very limited power. Lovely computer to look at though. Fell in love with it at bestbuy.
Are you basing that "very limited power" assessment on personal experience with that software on a clean system?

My 1.2/512 gen1 runs everything I throw at it as well as or better than my 2011 MBA13 that it replaced. Including Lightroom and DXO Optics Pro and Aurora HDR. Not as fast as my quad i7 mac mini does, but I had no expectation that it did. Batch raw processing is about half the speed on the rMB, meaning I wait about 1.5 seconds longer per RAW image converted. Both are done by the time I get back with a fresh cup of coffee so it doesn't much matter. :)

Thanks for the advice!

We bought it at Portland so no tax with Apple care and company discount (5%). If they can just swap it that would be awesome, I don't even mind if I need to pay tax now that I'm back in WA. Will have to stop by the store tomorrow hopefully they have the new one in stock soon.

I was worried I'd want to upgrade to 2nd gen but looks like I can hang on until the next one!

Wonder if BoltJames will acknowledge this update's existence.

He'll have something to say. But who's listening anymore?

Pretty damn disappointed.

No price drop.
No 720p web cam.
No 2160p at 60hz

Those were all the minimum expectations along with Skylake.

Faster memory and ssd will barely show up in benchmarks let alone real life. You will never notice it.
One hour battery life and slightly better graphics is all it got.

Pretty sure that seals it for me. I'll be getting the Samsung Notebook 9. If I could wait till Summer or more likely Fall for new Apple machines I would.
Even then, the new 13/14" machines will be 2.5+lbs with 6th gen core i5 vs the 13.3" Samsung 6th gen core i5 at 1.85lbs.
Just the resale value and some small things about osx I'll miss like like more mouse gestures.

I agree and I would add the need for a second USB-C.

Wait. So this means you're all going to continue to whine about this for another year?

And you're going to act like an Apple industry expert when you're clearly not?

The glowing Apple logo was so much nicer looking, it seems the design team hates any sort of external lighting. They removed battery indicators, LED charge indicators and everything else the lights up on their laptop. Same with the iPhone they could have put a notification LED on the phone and they didn't.

I never understood why apple hates this. I love LED indicators. I love the LED light that lets me know when my MBA is charged, I like the LED apple logo on the back, and I like the LED backlit keys. I am obsessed with lights I guess. When I had a samsung galaxy s3, I downloaded the "Lightflow" app which designated a wide range of colors for notifications.

My guess is, one, that they are obsessed with thinner more than functionality so LED is just another thing to shave off. Two, maybe their research shows that LED lighting doesn't "flow" with the clean apple look. I think its stupid, as I found it extremely convenient to look at the LED indicator without having to touch my phone screen on to check.

Check out some of these PC builds, basically everything is decorated in multi-color LED (cooling fans, keyboards, mouses, and even some of the apple set ups some people have LED lights set behind their screen for ambient lighting.

I've brought this LED topic up before in the iphone forum and got ripped a new one as the majority felt LED notifications were stupid. So thank those jackasses for being the influence as to why apple will never adopt it.

From day 1, it was either delusion or trolling. His ability to reason makes it obvious it was the former. It'd be quite entertaining if he kept up his charade.

Why not go for the refurbs? They are going for $919. I have owned refurbished Macs before. They look just as good as new. The main difference is that they ship in plain white boxes instead of the fancy Apple box.

As a birthday gift, I'd prefer giving new and having her open the plastic wrapping. Though that is a good price on the 2015s. If the new rose gold weren't around, the decision would be much easier. Will probably wait it out for some kind of 100-150 discount sometime before the end of the year.

Beside my LED rant 2 posts above...

NO. I wanted a lot more for this upgrade. It makes no sense to go for the newer model at this point for my uses. If I can score a good deal on a 1st gen. maybe I will pull the trigger but I feel that time has passed (won't be refurb need it brand new!).

I may see if the Pro line gets updated. Or just attempt my first PC build and buy an iPad to supplement.

I'm still pretty shocked at the 480p front camera, that seems... pathetic.

You know, I don't own one yet so I can't speak with much authority. However, from the few hours I've played with one, it's easily the most dumbfounding thing on the machine.

I can make a case for basically all of the, what I guess most people would call caveats, with the system except that one. Testing it out, it had the image quality of the original external iSight. Truly a phenomenal achievement in 2015.

Not that I ever use the webcam. Still though, why bother having it at that rate?

you mean 2016 now that it's been refreshed with the same glorious 480p camera?

What's wrong with a refurb? Apart from the box you would never know it isn't new. The battery is replaced and it has a full warranty.

1 USB

in 2016.

Wait I just realized that my 2013 MBA has a better camera?

Why?

What?

Yes, not that I'm in the market to buy one yet, but it's a likely purchase in another generation or two. This spec bump is pretty much exactly what I was expecting. Would have been nice to see a 720p camera, but I very rarely use the one on my iMac so it doesn't matter much. What I'm really interested in seeing is the release of a bigger brother. I think today's announcement that the 13" Air got a RAM bump is pretty much the final nail in the coffin for the Air line. My guess is the 13" hangs around for one more year while the 11" gets discontinued any day now. In line with this expectation, a 13" or 14" MB will fill the void: that's what I'm interested in. That'll be my purchase where I make the conversion to all-USB-C and a 4K monitor.

You're right. It is just I love having it BRAND NEW. Maybe I will consider it down the road.

Two questions about refurbished units:
- Is there any maximum for battery cycles in refurbished units? How many do I have to expect usually?
- Is it possible to get Apple Care for a refurbished one?

With just a few battery cycles and 3 years Apple Care the refurbished last generation seems to be a much better deal.

No. This machine genuinely NEEDS a second USB-C port. On top of that, was also expecting 1.2GHz as the base clock and a 720p FaceTime camera at the bare minimum. I'm getting so frustrated with Apple lately. I get that this is the "S" of the MacBook 12 cycle, but this thing has glaring flaws that needed to be addressed.

It doesn't need a 2nd USB port. You need a machine with 2 USB ports. Therefore, you are in the market for a MBP. Hang tight for the refresh.

Odd, I purchased mine on April 1st so I chatted up support today and they said they will hold to the 14 days.

I literally cannot imagine a scenario where I'd need two USB-C ports. The only time I'd ever use a port would be to connect a display, or a USB-A device, both of which are very rare occurrences. In this event, the HDMI adapter has a charging pass-through. I don't need or want a second port.

It will give you 30hz at 4k max. Its not an issue of the Core M or anything else, its just the maximum bandwidth the USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 port Apple uses can supply.

That to me is the worst offense in this update.

I can live with 480p, a single port, and no TB3. I can't live without 4K @ 60hz. There may be a legitimate reason for all the other shortcomings, but as far as I can tell there's absolutely ZERO reason for Apple to keep using USB 3 gen 1.
