You mean someone from iFixit stuff confirmed that, and not just some random posting unknown forum member nickname "iknoweverything12345" or like that? I'm not saying your source is lying, but I know what I have tested myself and the keyboards just don't sound even close to the same between the two (MBP 14" and MBA M2). Sure they look the same.
I'm not sure of the credentials of the person who posted it. I literally have both machines next to me right now and they feel and sound identical. Not sure what else to say.

That's what I thought.

For me there was obvious difference between the two. I tried that in two different shops because I first thought that MBA M2 I tested the first time was faulty due to resonating noise in this test.

No difference.
Interesting. I just got my MBP 14" and this one also has excellent and silent keyboard like the demo models I tested. Unlike both MBA M2 mode models I tested had terrible resonating noise when hitting H or J key a bit more force.

Anyway, I'm happy that I chose MBP 14" after all. Now that I have used it for a day, it does not feel too heavy and speakers + display are very nice. Especially mini LED panel is a huge difference to edge lit panels.

Would love to hear your thoughts on it as performance/temps with an external display (3440x1440) is the one area my Intel Macbook Air 2019 really struggles with and the reason I'm thinking of upgrading to a Macbook Air M2!
I would have like to have had them too - but my 5K Ultrafine died on me Monday :-(

That said, the M1 Air tended to become a little lukewarm when running the 5K in clamshell, but nothing like the Air 2019 that spun up the 'fan' to the max, became blazingly hot and slugging right from the moment of connection it to the 5K display 🤣

For what it's worth, the M2 Air is entirely cool when running a new 1440p Dell via usb-c ( no WAY I'm paying USD 550 for a height adjustable stand for the ASD 😂)

I nearly did that, but for $110 more for the same 1TB/16GB configuration, I'm glad I waited for the M2 Air.
I have the 16gb/1tb M1 and it's great... I am curious about the M2 due to the redesign and the increased performance,,, How are you liking the m2? Did you actually have the M1?

I went from a MacBook (12-inch) 2017 with i5 / 8GB RAM to MacBook Air 2022 with M2 / 16GB / 256GB SSD and I love it.

I travel for a couple months a year, and portability is key for me (and i generally love the new design). The choice was between MBP 14 and MBA 2022, and I'm definitely happy with my choice. The time I spend not traveling, but at work, I'd estimate half of my time is spent in meeting rooms, or having casual chats where I'd carry my laptop. I'm not stationary for the majority of the time and i definitely notice a difference with the MBP 14 (I've had a temp. one for about a month).

I'm using about 8GB of RAM on a regular basis, mostly dedicated to Chrome and keeping all my work apps running in the background.

I never had the M1, no. I'm sure that for all intents and purposes, it would suit my purposes just as well, but when I finally decided that I needed a new computer, the M1 Pro and its MagSafe connector had just been released, and the assumption that it would be included with the M2 Air was enough to make me willing to wait. If the M2 had been held for much longer. I would have bought an M1 Air.

That’s good to know. The sluggishness is what really prevents me from being able to use my 2020 Intel MBA with an external display.

I’ve just ordered a new M2 MBA to replace it so we’ll see how that goes! I’m fairly confident it’ll be fine. If not I’ll send it back in the return window and will wait for an updated M2 MBP!

Seems silly needing to buy a “Pro” model just to get usable performance in productivity apps and web browsers when connected to an external display though!

Hopefully the M2 MBA is up to the job as I don’t really want the larger /heavier MBP.

M1 air with 16gb crushes my studio display - butter smooth

How much are you getting for your M1 Air if I may ask? And private party or reseller?

Im selling my M1 Air base for $545 on Macmeanoffer
I just traded it back to Apple for I think like $500. Didn't want to bother with Craigslist or setting up another account somewhere. IMO that covers most of the extra stuff I wanted - memory and drive. :)

What on earth were you doing during setup that made it even warm? Just after first boot, I downloaded from iCloud my photo library with 21,000 full-size pictures and my 3,000-song music library while also running Time Machine backups and it didn't get above room temperature.
Out of interest, how much space did the iCloud library take up on your SSD? I’ve got about 30k photos and 7000 videos so wondering if my 256gb air will get crushed (I’m away so no access to the machine)

which dell model is that?

Never had a mac before but have had iPhones. My faithful old Asus 13" Zenbook is going through keyboards and they are getting hard to find. Random keys keep dying which makes it impossible to type a simple e-mail. They don't have any current products that interest me so I took the leap on a 16GB M2 Macbook air.

Likes: just about everything. Display, taller screen ratio, keyboard, lots of other stuff.
Dislikes: the usual stuff, like no SD card slot, no USB A port. I have the adapters... at least until I lose them. And I hate that cluttered system tray (or whatever Apple calls it) at the bottom. Do they really have to have every app there? I need to clean that up if possible. But I am guessing that they will reappear whenever you use them. Sorry to say I like the Windows approach better. App icon appears there when running and disappears when shut down. These are always there and just the little black dot to show they are active. Dislike.

I also got Final Cut Pro pre-installed for some video editing. Nothing serious, just some occasional youtube stuff.

I chose the starlight color just to get something different. In retrospect I probably should have got Space Gray or Midnight. C'est la vie.

So I bought a MBP 14 last year and it was a fantastic machine. But too powerful for my knowledge worker needs, and not light enough to cycle around with. Always felt like I’d break it or something

So I sold it last week for zero loss, and bought a MBA M2 base model.

I read all the reviews about ssd speed, RAM levels etc. My logic was that by NOT spending an extra £400 on 16go/512gb I could put that into my music production machine at home - perhaps upgrade to an M2 Mac Mini

Because I bought the Air thru my limited company (tax rebate) + got a student discount, the effective cost to me was about £650 so very cheap.

Given how cheap it was tho, I’m now wavering and considering returning for the 16gb/512gb - ha! Ive got concerns about my iCloud library eating up the 256gb base SSD + not being able to do virtualisation etc. Would cost me about £1100

Jeeez, the cycle of purchasing never ends :/

Yeah, you probably won't be able to store all of those locally. I have 20,385 photos and 170 videos (mostly short clips of our cats), and that's taking up 79 GB. In total, with photos and videos, music, documents, a few downloaded TV shows and movies, messages, mail, apps and the OS itself, I'm using about 200 GB.

Try the app uBar. It sort of mimics the windows feel, you can hide the mac menu bar at the bottom and it will only pop up when you mouse over it.

So far I'm loving the M2 MBA!

Admittedly, I haven't had it very long, but I'm happy so far. I got it yesterday, installed a game that runs on top of Rosetta for compatibility, and played for almost an hour on fairly high graphics settings (higher than I use on my Intel iMac). In the first 30 minutes it remained cool to the touch. After that it was lukewarm, and eventually very slightly warm to the touch. Did it throttle? Eventually. After around 40 minutes of playing I lost about 5 FPS as it warmed up. So it went from getting around 55-60 FPS when I started to about 50-55 FPS toward the end of the hour.

It didn't throttle significantly, it didn't melt into a puddle, it didn't scald me. Maybe I just got a good unit, maybe the YouTubers are testing unrealistic conditions and hyping for clicks. But my hands-on experience with it has been beyond expectations in the short time I've had it.

I love my M2 MBA! I got it with 10C/24GB/1TB, and I connect a 4K (3840x2160) display to it. It gets barely lukewarm. Not sluggish at all, no stuttering, no problems.

I love the design and the Air's great portability, and I have no intention of returning it. Also it works very well with what I'm doing. I don't need the M1 Pro or Max as my workflows don't involve heavy GPU usage (which is essentially the only case where it makes sense to get a Mac with Pro/Max processor).

Yet another Air purchased for my wife, midnight 8/8 16/512, seems fine [yawn] ableit overpriced as usual. Will no doubt expode again at 3 years and one day or so.

Last Air developed broken ribbon cable to screen at this point & so she was trying to work for a while with the screen half-open so she could see something. The Air before that stopped suddenly in bed one nght with a fiizz and electrical smell; dead. The Air before that developed battery swelling and no run time without power cord attached. etc etc.

Clearly, built-in obsolesence once Apple Care expires and so then everyone is expected to shell out for another overpriced device to please Apple sharholders ... whatever. Is a sign of the times no doubt.

I was going to go with a similar build, but honestly decided to save $800 and get the same performance in an arguably better form factor for $1399 (m1 refurb 1TB 16gb)

It's called Dock and you can move every app icon out of it.
But I am guessing that they will reappear whenever you use them.
If an app is not in the Dock it only appears to the very right of the Dock when it is running. When you close it it disappears also from the Dock.

In System Preferences you can also set the Dock to appear only if you hover to the bottom of the screen. You can also disable the black dot that signals running apps.
By default the last three used apps are also in the Dock, but you can disable that as well.

I have a 10/16/1TB M2 Air and a M1 14" Pro. I bought the Air to compare, and then decide which one to sell, if any.

I will be selling the Pro, for two reasons: weight and silence. They are so close really. I haven't compared the performance, (and who needs this kind of performance anyway? :D)

I have the 2022 M2 MBA 10 Core GPU, 24 GB memory, 2 TB SSD in Space Gray, in other words maxed out. I traded this for my 2020 M1 MBA, 16GB memory and 1 TB SSD. I also own a 16" M1 Max MBPro with 64GB memory and 4TB of SSD. That is my workhorse laptop for the heavy lifting at home and is too heavy for use as a travel machine.

I wanted to upgrade the 2020 M1 MBA so that I could get a 2 TB SSD and consider this to be a very expensive upgrade. The net cost (including Apple Care and taxes here in Texas) was around $2500 after trade in. This is a lot of money for a light laptop suitable for travel and I nearly decided to abandon the upgrade. In the end I decided to keep the machine and write off my mistake of not ordering the original 2020 M1 MBA with a 2TB which would have sufficed for my needs.

I use the machine for a large number of docs, spreadsheets and, most importantly, my photographs while traveling (I am often in areas with no internet connectivity). I needed a machine with decent storage and a good screen to preview my output and decide whether I need to reshoot or not. This MBA is fine for this task. I do not apply lots of LRC filters except for some trial changes. Overall the machine is a nice machine but a little utilitarian in appearance with decent performance, light weight and low battery consumption, but very expensive. It is an iterative upgrade from the 2020 MBA and a nice but not 'must have' upgrade (unless you need more SSD space, as I did).
