So you decide to get an Air but your workflow doesn’t support that? How smart.
No. As much as I like the M2's design language, the 14" MBP is the obvious replacement. Smart is getting the best out of the product. My notebook's are a significant factor in my workflow and pay for themselves instantly on first use/

I kind of have a handle on what works and what doesn't...

Generally I think it is great. Speed is great, etc. Only not great to me is size of some of fonts on thins such as the bar on top. Also, not sure I like the display in all cases but some issue is getting used to it and getting all setup for me.

Base M1 13" MBP here, not willing to roll the dice on a reduction in performance as at the limit now. 14" M2 beckons in time. For me is a secondary notebook so no need to over invest.

The problem is whether apple will botch the thermal design of the m2 mbp, as well…

Apparently not if you run intensive engineering apps and bought an Air.

They didnt botch the Air design. It's just whiny people saying "But if you run this fanless design at max capacity for a long time it gets hot" No ****. So does the M1.

Anyone who needs to run at or close to full throttle for a long-ish time on the CPU and/or GPU and needs to do that regularly should buy the Pro or Max depending on their specific needs. The Air can do it and if you only run that hard relatively rarely, it will be fine. But if someone does it regularly because that's how they use a machine... get the Pro.

What on earth were you doing during setup that made it even warm? Just after first boot, I downloaded from iCloud my photo library with 21,000 full-size pictures and my 3,000-song music library while also running Time Machine backups and it didn't get above room temperature.
Basically the same thing plus google drive loading and typically Mac OS stuff. It got HOT

Hmm. No such issue here. I don't use the Google Drive app, though; the web interface is good enough. I was also downloading documents via iCloud Drive, Though; I had forgotten about that. Still no heat at all.

That's exactly why I didn't buy the M2 Air, reading comprehension and all. Apple has crippled the base M2 Air & 13" MBP to force inhouse upgrades or higher tier products plain and simple.

A 50% reduction in R/W on the SSD is a significant issue making the base M2's redundant for a good many educated users. The base M1's were too good and they knew it, this is Apple's solution...

I was planning to buy the base M2 Air, but decided not to do it when Apple messed up the SSD's.

And I'm not going to buy Apple's overpriced upgrades to fix their machine, because then it becomes so expensive, I might as well get the 14" MBP then.

If Apple decides to come with a new revision and puts 2 NAND modules on the base M2 MBA, I might buy it. Else I am waiting for the M3 MBA.

Think the M2 Air is nice but a few things I don't like compared the 14 MBP
-1, keyboard, much nicer on the 14, its all uniform, the M2 Air has metal between each key, making it more difficult to type IMO
-2, its very thin! had it yesterday in my backpack and had to be extra careful with it, not used to that with thicker models
-3, speakers are not very good IMO, especially compared to the 14
-4, logo, is nicer on the 14 as it has more contrast (picky I know) 😜

Yes indeed.. there's a slightly difference and you can notice but obviously when you are playing a test video like that and they are next to each other. Is difficult when we are talking about exactly the same price for both.
one on the right is much better quality.... IMO

The keyboard on the M2 is the same as the 14 MBP.

no, its not the same at all. I am sitting here with both..... the MBP has a solid back, much "cushier" keyboard than the Air which has metal Frame between each and every key!
Both are Magic Keyboards and the Air has the same keyboard as the 14 & 16 mbp. The frame color looking a little different in the Air doesn’t mean it isn’t the same keyboard.

I'm trying to think of how this is a disadvantage...I would think for most, besides price, this is the major selling point of the Air over the 14 MBP. The extra size/weight was what turned me off from the 14.

I am satisfied enough to return it and get an upgraded model when possible. Let me explain.
I got the base model on launch day because it was the only one available. I wanted to see if I liked the feel of it, and it's great. I like size, the weight, and the screen, which I use at real 2x retina (looks like 1280x832). The speakers, mic, camera are ok, but not great. I got the midnight color which looks very nice, except for all the smudges. I cannot get them off easily (or at all in some cases), and even if I did, they would be back in 10 minutes of use.

So I know I am going to get the 8gpu/16GB/1TB config. What is unclear to me at this time is the color.
I'm oscillating between silver and midnight.

I really like the low contrast of the midnight case to the black keyboard, and how it all fades out of focus when using the computer. But I dislike the way my computer looks worn and dirty every time I look at it (and I'm on the low end of the oily fingers spectrum). As for the silver, I've always liked the look of it and it's much easier to clean, but I don't really like the way the black keys contrast with the off-white spaces between them - it stands out a lot and can get fatiguing on the eyes. If the silver came with a white keyboard, it would be the top choice for me by far.

I love mine and am satisfied (10/16GB/1TB). Traded in my M1 MBP which was a fine machine. But goodbye to fiddling around with that complicated touchbar to do simple tasks like changing volume or screen brightness.

10% lighter, trackpad performance is better with more satisfying click response (subjective I know). Love the larger screen and MagSafe. Only downgrade is the small reduction on battery life the MBP.

I returned my starlight base model. I already have an MBP 14 and planned on replacing it with the MBA as both offer enough performance for my needs. After six days of use, my thoughts are the MBA does exactly what it's supposed to do and the design and physical characteristics are fine. I had no issues with the slower memory nor with overheating. The MBA did not get hot and performed well. So, why the return? Comparing both machines side-by-side made me realize how close to perfect the MBP 14 is (yes, a subjective opinion). The screen size is right where I need it; performance is more than I need; the display is better than any other laptop I've seen; size, weight and performance are perfectly optimized for my use. And, I know there are differing opinions about the keyboard in this thread, but I found the MBP keyboard to be a bit softer (maybe a touch more travel?) and more to my liking. If I didn't have the MBP, the MBA would be fine but the MBP just sets the bar so high I will stay with it.

yeah I guess it largely is a selling point, but once you use it for a few days it feels fragile at least to me..
