The wife just got into the Facebook addiction so I'll probably have to get the new iLife.

Imovie additions are bonuses. Might even check out the music lesson thing.

Don't care about iWeb or iDVD. And GarageBand is a sweet program I never use too.

I felt this way when they released the new ipod touch in September, i really wanted one, but i just couldn't justify it enough. I guess i will start using iLife 08 a bit more to see if it would be worth upgrading, and i will download the demo of iWork 09 to check it out, though i am fine at the moment with Office 08 (But it is from Microsoft, and so hurts my eyes to use).

I am going to buy the new ILife. The upgrades to IPhoto are nice, but mostly I'm excited about IMovie. It now more closely reminds me of some of the PC movies apps I've used in the past...only better.

When you buy this online will it be a download, or will you order it and wait for the disk? And, can you buy a family pack and split it with friends, or is that against the license agreement?

I don't think you can download the software, they send you the actual disc.

As for the family pack, it is for computers in the same household. From Apple's website:

The Family Pack Software License Agreement allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple software on up to a maximum of five (5) Apple-labeled computers at a time as long as those computers are located in the same household and used by persons who occupy that household. By "household" we mean a person or persons who share the same housing unit such as a home, apartment, mobile home, or condominium, including students who are primary residents of that household but reside at a separate on-campus location. This license does not extend to business or commercial users.

i think i'll be upgrading to ilife09 just for iphoto and imovie. imovie08 was horrible. final cut was so much more at home. but it took too much resources for my poor little mac.. so this new imovie update better be good.

iLife 09 has no value for me. I use Aperture to manage my photos (I am no pro just like the Aperture features in managing a photo library). iMovie 09 doesnt seem to offer native AVCHD editing, so I won't go with less quality (why did I buy my Full HD camera if I was to use inferior quality when editing?) and the rest apps aren't important to me...
I would buy iPhoto to give it a try but I don't want the rest apps...

part of the reason it's priced so high is precisely because some people decide to pirate it. if no one pirated say cs4, its cost would be significantly lower. ....

I'm not sure this is true.

First one must make the assumption that the people who pirate software would otherwise purchase it. We have no way of knowing how many pirates would actually buy the software, but it is legitimate to think that at least some would actually pay for the software.

At this point, the software company has additional money from those sales. Here's where the "magic" comes in: The company makes more money but decides to give that money back in the way of lower prices. This does not make sense. One must assume that the companies have already figured out the ideal price for their software to maximize profits. More profit is just better; if anything, more people buying should rationally cause the companies to think about charging more, not less. (This is what seems to happen.)

The point of copy protection on software is to make more money by reducing pirates, not to make cheaper software. Notice that Adobe software has not gotten cheaper since they added copy protection mechanisms.

Another factor is that those who pirate software also create a larger base for that software, so that, for example, Photoshop becomes even more dominant because companies can hire people who have learned the program through pirated copies.

A fourth factor is that piracy itself is often in reaction to high prices. For example, the number of people who would pirate a $99 Photoshop is much lower than those who pirate a $699 Photoshop (assuming the programs are the same otherwise). In that way, piracy might help keep prices lower.

There are plenty of arguments for why piracy does increase prices (stifling new competition, etc), but it's definitely not a clear-cut case.

I don't advocate piracy, and I truly believe that we need better education on how and why piracy hurts industry. This is a serious problem with a lot of negative effects. However, it's not clear that piracy causes higher prices.

I can hardly wait! I am squeeing like a total fangirl. (But then again, I am a total fangirl. :p ) I have it on preorder from Apple already.

I'm getting it for Garageband and iMovie. And I'm sure I'll like the improvements to iDVD (whatever they may be). I never used iWeb or iPhoto much, but I'll give them a try.

Am most excited about iMovie. It looks like they made it a "real" video editor again. (iMovie 08 was one big FAIL as far as I was concerned.)

I will most likely buy it when the university's computer store gets it. It's usually a cheap buy at school.

I will absolutely pay to upgrade iLife on my two computers. I think they've made some great changes to iPhoto and iMovie that will more than justify the cost.

I will not upgrade iWork -- I just didn't see a whole lot there that was worth the cost.

My opinion.

If I just bought a new macbook one month ago, will I be eligible for this software free?

After watching the keynote, I definitely think I'll upgrade to iLife '09. I'll probably recommend it to my uncle, who is still learning how to use his iMac, because of that faces stuff. That's beyond awesome and will help non-techies figure out where stuff is easier. The Facebook syncing looks even better than the plugin I downloaded, and I'm all about that geotagging, although none of my non-iPhone cameras do it.

iMovie definitely looks better, although I didn't think iMovie '08 was as bad as some say. It certainly ran better than iMovie HD, although it lacked a lot of features. iMovie '09 looks massively improved over both of those.

I also loved the look of the guitar lessons on Garage Band. Apple could probably make a killing on similar lessons if they could move toward school band and orchestra instruments. But I'm hoping to get better at guitar by using that.

Reported him too.

Do you go to Future Shop and steal camcorders also?
Just because its easier to steal software, doesn't make it less of a crime.

I don't live in Canada so I don't exactly go to future shop, ever. Is it like best buy?

You can hit report all you want, but I have done nothing against the TOS. As quoted from TOS

Warez/Serials/Keys. Do not post software serial numbers or keys or refer people to specific websites or software whose purpose is to break or bypass software licensing methods, distribute cracks, or obtain or use commercial software or media in violation of its license and/or for copyright violation. Do not ask for or give such help.

Again, this argument was from yesterday and we are trying to stop it.

I only use iPhoto and the current version suits me quite well. If I have the extra money in the future I may upgrade.

yeah totally, iMovie '08 sucks so this update is definitely worth the money, and i don't have a .mac account so the FTP with iWeb will actually make me use it for the first time! The presentation sucked tho, all there was was 3 little updates nothing new.

Nice contradiction, you said 3 little updates and nothing new. The 17" MBP was new for a start. And the updates "updated" Apple's software with "new" features. Don't expect Apple to release brand new product lines at every MacWorld or keynote presentation. It ain't going to happen.

With that being said, I use iWork/Office 08 almost daily for school. Hence I purchased iWork '09. I will probably buy iLife '09 once it becomes available for purchase. I edit/make videos for YouTube and the new iMovie features are pretty cool. And I used to store my photos as jpeg files on an external HD. Now I might buy an iMac, I might stick my photos there using iPhoto '09.

Actually it is arguably less of a crime. In economics, software (effectively a sequence of 1s and 0s) is considered a non-rivalrous good since one person's use does not prevent another from using it - as stealing a ferrari (or camcorder, take your pick) quite clearly would.

As dwsolberg pointed out, the user base may actually increase, ironically creating a positive network effect (existing users gain benefit as more people become users).

Again, I'm not saying that piracy is good, just pointing out that you are ill-informed.

...and 'reporting' users for light-heartedly mentioning piracy - is this school?

ILife 09

I'm sooooo bummed....
I just bought ILife 08 on Dec. 30th 08. When I asked @ the store about ILife 09 the guy said there was nothing announced. Return date is Jan. 13 but of course the box is already opened.
Any suggestions or negotiation ideas?
Thanks for you help

I skipped '08 but will probably upgrade after some of you early adopters help work the kinks out ;)
