If China invades Taiwan, you’ll be too busy dealing with the collapse of modern computing infrastructure from the loss of TSMC to worry about loss of future upgrades.

Nah, it will be an incremental update. My M4 will keep me going for ages. The screen on it and as such the M5 is stunning. Looking forward to iPad OS 26 bringing some BIG changes to it though.

The 2018 iPad Pro is going on the path of the iPad Air 2. The 2018 pro is still alive and kicking and it is still supported, so I cant seem much traction until it is finally not supported with the latest iOS. My wife is not a tech person at all and she just loves using her 2018 pro to watch shows and surf the web. It's on the latest beta and working like a charm.
my 2018 iPad Pro is barely running on the latest beta. Like I open the settings app to install the update and it just fails to load and crashes multiple times. Everything is just so slow and laggy. I suspect this will be the update which forces users to finally give up their 2018 iPad Pro.

Intresting how some people say it's smooth as butter on 26 and other say the opposite. I have left mine on 17 and it feels as fast as my M1 (mine has 6GB RAM...) I guess I won't take the risk until 17 starts being problematic as 15 is starting to be now (so a couple of years down the line...)

My M1 12.9 IPP as of January 2024 logic board was starting to fail so when they announced M4 13” IPP It was perfect timing to trade my M1 I see no need to update to the M5 maybe the next gen following

I don’t think I will be buying another iPad until the ram and the neural engine are increased. Meanwhile, I’m very happy with my M2 and my iPad mini.

Having the current model (M4 Pro)l, I don’t plan on upgrading anytime soon.
Yep those with M4 iPP’s have a device good enough to last as long as the 2018 model is currently going. Unless of course FOMO or if the 8 GB ram becomes an issue later on.

I'm due for an iPad this year so yes, I'm kinda waiting to see what the next Pro is like.

Currently on an M1 air and frequently regret not going for the M1 Pro when that was current, never mind what's on offer today/next month.

I'd upgraded from a 10.5" pro and the screen/speakers are a real downgrade, more so than I'd anticipated.

Which is why I opted for the 1TB model. Got more ram and storage for future proofing. I used the iPad 2 for like 8 years so this one should have a good, long life lol. Plus the nano texture is just beautiful

8GB is an issue for me already now. I sold my M1 and M2 8GB and got maxed out M1 and M2 (2TB 5G, it's a long story why I upgraded both... instead of getting rid of them, but there are reasons...). Now my M4 has 8GB and it's the next to go, but instead of getting M4 maxed out I'll wait for the M5. If they give no extra RAM for the 1/2 TB I might get the entry model. I am still debating whether to sell it now to get more money or wait for the M5...

I am in a pickle. The tandem OLED on the M4 IPP gave me headaches (the first time for me on an OLED device), and my 2018 iPP has a terrible battery life and is a bit slow. I refuse to downgrade to an iPad Air (promotion is a must) or buy an M2 iPP as they are stupid money still.
I am in the same boat. I do have a 2018 and a M1. I did get a M2 air last year, but I haven't gamed on it much. Used some for procreate - I like having that size for some situations.

Have you tried turning off Auto brightness, true tone and night shift? With these modes ON, the screen dims which is where the PWM flickering is at its worst. Manually setting brightness to 45-50% works for me personally with no headaches etc.
I did this in Best Buy the other day and it worked for me. But the thing is paying that much money to never be able to turn up the brightness. I am a graphic designer and I need to see the details and colors at best quality....

You can turn Up the brightness thats not an issue, its lowering the brightness below say 40% where pwm flickering is at its worst. But yes i agree paying £1000+ for the Tandem OLED screen but not being able to use features like true tone and auto brightness sucks for sure.

I once waited for the M2 IPP so I could buy an M1 refurb for cheaper :D

I'd say I want to do the same again with the M4-M5 specbump but honestly the M1 is still way ahead of what I use the iPad for.

Personally, I don't mind turning off those features. It is just I struggle to go above 25-30% brightness as I have pretty sensitive eyes (and don't use my iPad out the house much in bright spaces).

I'm used to not being able to use those features on my Apple OLED devices, but they were very useful when I could use them on the older LCD screens.

Auto brightness - Better battery life and more manageable brightness levels.
True Tone - Just better on the eyes as matches the surrounding ambient light.
Night Shift - Again better on the eyes when winding down for the evening, and when I am actually working night shifts (dont want blue light blasting in my face).

I also have sensitive eyes, and I had to return the M4 11” iPad twice (at first I thought I received a faulty unit, because I never experienced so much eye strain within few minutes of using a device).
I hope they somehow fix the PWM issue entirely, or improve it to iPhone 13 Pro levels because I can use that phone for 30-60 minutes without eye strain, and I heard from others that phone had very comfortable PWM & modulation levels 🤷‍♂️

:( I've never had an issue with any OLED device (Multiple LG TVs, many iPhones and even a QD-OLED 4K monitor), which is why I was very surprised. My 2018 iPP certainly won't last until the M6 variant (assuming they change the panel at all), so i'm really not sure what i'll do.
