My air weighs the same

Air weighs 469 grams (wifi only model).
Retina mini weighs 331 grams (wifi only model).
Original mini weighs 308 grams (wifi only model).

Difference of 23 grams and the rMini is a brick, yet the Air, which weighs 138 grams more, "weighs the same"?

And if you are comparing a Kindle to an iPad, you are simply not serious about owning a high end tablet.

I believe the reviews OP is citing compared iPads to Kindle Fire, not the eink Kindles.

Here in canada its $90 more, not $70 which is pretty steep if you ask me. Again, its not so much that $90 is the end of the world, but that the principle of jacking up the price, in a trend where its never happened with previous models is shady and all about money.

One thing that people tend to forget about the mini is that the screen on it was very close to retina quality due to the smaller size of the ipad 2, resulting in a higher pixel count. So thats why the rmini has a very miniscule improvement.

Im not keeping the mini cause im looking to upgrade the screen. Once i saw the nexus 7, i was shocked what ive been missing for the past year. If any of you have seen the clarity on the nexus 7, it makes the rmini look like an ipad2.

Rminis screen came in last place vs the kindle and nexus 7. That is unnaceptable considering those are devices 1/2 the price of the rmini.
again i think you missed over reading my post.

Have you ever had an older iPhone? first through 3gs? It has the same ppi as the mini. Did you notice a difference on such a small screen 3.5" going to retina(4 times as many pixels)...
That upgrade was HUGE and a game changer.
The same thing happened to the retina mini iPad.

The original mini was not close to retina at all you don't really know what your talking about. IT had a horrible screen in comparison...

I'm returning my air i had for the last 3 weeks and keeping my mini don't know what you deal is maybe you just want to flaunt buying a nexus? who knows.

I never had a non retina iphone before, i have the 4 right now. Clarity is great, and maybe im not testing it the right way but when i put the rmini next to my iphone 4, i dont see it looking nowhere as good.

All I ever wanted was more storage space on my mini, so the 128gb model is well worth the money for me. The lovely retina display is icing on the cake. My screen has no noticeable issues, and I haven't bothered doing an image retention test. I don't see it in normal use, so why bother checking? Love my rMini. I hope you find a device you're happy with.

go look at reviews from a 3gs screen to a 4.
basically thats what has happened with iPads. Honestly i think you see it better on a bigger screen then a small phone. i don't know how anybody can not see the huge upgrade the mini has gotten over the original.

Coming from an iPad 2- iPad 3 was that a big jump to you? basically same performance(sometimes worse) but huge upgrade on the screen.

What the retina mini did that iPad 2-3 is a HUGE upgrade in speed(a7), more ram, Huge upgrade on the screen even though you don't think so for some crazy reason better cameras and basically the same weight.

i upgraded from an iPad 2-3 just for the screen and i was perfectly happy with none upgrade in performance. Coming from an iPad 3 to a retina mini( i still have an air but its going back) is a huge speed increase and sharper images if i hold the screen close enough. Plus the form factor of the mini is awesome. thats the reason the air is going back it is still to big imo for a tablet. 8" is the sweet spot. how do you feel with the 7" screen?

I just went for the non retina to the retina and being a eye glass reader with just okay reading vision I do not have to zoom in to read the retina. The non retina I would have to zoom in on this forum to read. Not so with the retina, right there alone made it a good upgrade for me. Cost is cost if too much don't buy, it's not rocket science here. Weight I can barely tell its heavier and not even a issue. It is speedier as well. I don't seem to have any screen issues but being a photographer I can tell the color gamut is not great and certainly not what my wide gamut color monitor is but it is also not bad either. I'm fairly happy with it.

I upgraded from a mini 1 to a mini 2

The difference is night and day to me, it's so smooth and quick to switch between apps now, even the 1GB of ram shows a massive improvement in safari. The screen is outstanding at the new high res, although mine is a tiny bit yellow at the bottom, I am dealing with it.

Sure it's a little heavier and I do notice that.

But I'm happy to pay the extra money for what I have now, rather than pay £80 less for a device which came with a non retina screen, and a processor that's 3 years old again.

No one is forcing you to buy the rMini. If you cannot afford it, then do not buy it. Go get the Nexus 7. It seems to be in your price range. You do have a choice.

I went from an iPad 3 to a mini, that was great for me, performance was basically identical for me, but the lightness was great. No retina really annoyed me though so I took it back after two weeks and waited for the rMini.

VERY happy to pay the extra, this thing is an absolute beast, the screen is incredible. You really don't know what you're talking about. Can't say I've even noticed a weight difference and to say the rMini and the Air weight the same?!

I moved on from the mini to the retina mini and have zero regrets. That's just me, but apple corrected all the short comings in the original model and made a superb tablet.

I stopped reading when you said the difference in clarity is small.
Seriously, if you truly believe that, definitely there is a huge difference in perception among people. It's like night and day, white and black. It is so different that I think the original Mini is useless to me (and because of that I didn't get it) and the new one is the tablet I've been waiting for (I had the big one in the past, too bulky for me, and the screen size itself annoys me too. I can't reach the center of the screen).

Image retention? It's a non issue. You won't notice it during real use. Gamut? Don't even know what that is. The screen is just ********** gorgeous.

Regarding tints or uneven screens, yeah that's a real issue, but it's been around in every iPad. You just have to be lucky for this one.

I went the opposite way than you. I went with the Mini w/Retina from the iPad 3. While I loved the iPad 3, the new Mini, which came yesterday, is fantastic! I think I am going to like the smaller screen size better than the full size.

Ive been Apples biggest fan of the original mini mainly cause I truly do believe its the perfect size and the most portable tablet today. Ive been looking forward to the rminis release for some time now, primarily for the retina, only to be in shock when I found out that Apple isnt sliding this into the original minis pricing, but $90CDN more! GREEDY!

I paid $330CDN for my mini the week it came in 2012. Best Buy here is giving gift cards for your ipads and for my 16GB mini, they offered me $210CDN, which I think is more than fair. But no, having to pay an extra $90 on top of the $330 for a new one, that is just wrong. So essentially it would cost me $230 with tax to upgrade to the rmini.

Now you tell me what is wrong with this pricing. $330CDN vs $420CDN for the 1st and 2nd gen minis in Canada is a complete joke. Thats 21% more for one gen upgrade?

Now factor in that this week, the 16GB Air was $20 off, making it $499, which made it only $80 more than the 16GB rmini. I compared the two and for $80 more, the Air was a much better value and showed just how overpriced the rmini is. Really its a no brainer. Only $80 to go from the rmini to the Air I think is a steal.

If Apple wants to jack up the price, the very least they could have done was upgrade the ram to 2GB, then i would see the value. I wont support this business practice as I believe its very greedy and criminal. But Apple doesnt care because people will still buy it, so you know whats going to happen next time? Apple will make this a permanent trend.

I would make a one time exception if the new screen blew me away, but unfortunately it didnt. When I first saw the rmini, it was a complete dissapointment on so many levels. I was expecting to be wowed like I was with the 3rd gen over the 2nd gen ipad.

Aside from the infamous yellowing and screen retention (what is this a plasma?), the improvement is very minimul to describe it generously. Screen retention? Gammut problems? Seriously Apple, is this 2001? I put my mini and rmini side by side viewing the exact same text content, and honestly...the only times where you can notice the rminis extra clarity is in portrait mode with super tiny text. View in landscape and its not nearly as apparent. I have very good vision, not 20/20 but very very close to it.

I did the retention checkerboard test on my rmini and what do you know, I have retention. It takes a good 2 minutes for it to go away with testing done with 35% brighness.

Icons, menu fonts and text are a tiny bit crisper by the eye on the rmini, but cmon....$230 for this? $100 i would pay yes, $150 maybe, but $230 is a straight out fleecing. This screen just doesnt wow me like the normal size ipad did when it had retina put in. If you are going to jack up the price, at the very least dont cheap out on the parts. Why did Apple put noticably lower grade screens, speakers, in this gen rmini?

I understand the markup on the original mini wasnt all that high from what I was told compared to the full size ipads. Was the rmini some kind of rebound job? I will say one thing, I also picked up an Air and now that screen floored me and destroys the rminis. Its not even close. Now this is how the minis screen should look. The clarity is unreal on the air. You really notice it with the added screen size. I just dont think with a 7" tab, that you get the maximum benefits from retina. Many reviews have said it that the Air has a much better screen and that the rmini screen didnt wow them.

The rminis screen improvement over the mini is so miniscule, that even though i much prefer the size of the mini, Im leaning more towards converting to the Air as my ipad and no longer supporting the mini, until Apple puts a high quality screen in there and not something manufactured at Dollarama. I dont want to leave the mini because I truly do believe its the best size tablet today for comfort and portability, but the rmini screen is such a dissapointment and for $230 you might as well go play Blackjack at your casino cause you have a better shot there hitting the jackpot than with the rmini.

Honestly, its nice to have the A7 in there, but unless you are running 64bit powerhouse games than its really just not needed right now. By the time it will be needed and put to use, 3rd gen mini with 2gb ram will be out. People can say what they want about the A7 quad core CPU, but the fact is, its not needed right now cause its untapped deadweight.

Speaking of weight, the added weight on the rmini is really unacceptable. The thing is now a brick. My air weighs the same and the weight distribution on the Air is much more balanced in the hands. The mini is so heavy compared to the mini. What a big dissapointment.

I wont even get into how bad the speakers sound. Apple calls these speakers? Really? For a $420 device, you wouldnt expect to have 99 cent speakers put in them. They are just horrid. I just dont know what Apple was thinking with the rmini, but to me it seems like a rushed and very quickly thought out release. Just seems like not much thought was put in to the rmini and they just mocked up all the details over a 30min lunch break.

I dont know what to do. I love the mini but after using the Air, i cant see myself going back to my 1st gen mini. It is night and day difference. I might convert to the Air but I will really miss the size of the mini.

holy hell, would you like some cheese with all that wine?

Rawr! Rawr! said the lioness.

Seriously, the last time I thought a product was overpriced I chose to pass it by & forget about it -- not write paragraph upon paragraph of meaningless pap. Kids today! :D

Apple's margins are high, but with that in mind, the higher price of the retina mini seems reasonable to me, seeing as it has something like double the processing power, double the ppi, and other improvements over the previous model. Would it really make sense to charge $170 less for it than the Air, given that except for size it has such similar specs? For those who don't think these new features add much value to the mini, Apple is still selling the original mini at a reduced cost so I don't see how that could be a problem. Speaking personally, I use the mini largely for reading pdfs, and to me the improvement in the screen of the retina over the mini is stunning.

I dont know what to do. I love the mini but after using the Air, i cant see myself going back to my 1st gen mini. It is night and day difference. I might convert to the Air but I will really miss the size of the mini.

I find it surprising you find the gap between the original mini and the retina min to be such a disappointment, while the difference between the retina mini and the Air screen is "night and day." To me, the difference between the retina mini and the original mini is far more stark than that between the retina mini and the air.

Nonetheless, it sounds like you need to consider the tradeoffs and decide what's most important to you; the portability of the mini or the beautiful screen of the Air. I like some things about the Air better than the retina mini, but overall I choose the mini because to me the portability factor is more important. Others will make different choices based on their preferences. We can't in general have everything we want; we have to make choices about what's most important to us. It's just one of those horrible burdens we unfortunate folk living in the first world of the twenty first century have to bear. :)

I read about possible retention problems before it was released which I thought would scare people away. I wonder what percentage of RMini users have this issue...

If it replaced the old mini for the same pricing, Id be ok with it but $420CDN price tag is just unacceptable especially when you factor in the low grade screen. Cnet rated the rmini screen as one of the worst for the 7-8" tabs.

Could be worse. You could be in the UK where we pay £500 ($810USD, $852CND) for a 32GB rMini LTE.
Or for the lowest priced 16GB WiFi rMini we pay £319 ($516USD, $544CND) .

Indeed, which is why I am holding of as cannot decide if £499 is worth it for a measly 32g, and therefore should be going for a 64g instead, which is then the same price I paid for my iPad 3 just 16 months ago

LOL well I feel better about getting my wife the original mini now. She would care less about the retina anyways. Especially if the colors don't jump out any more than the original. She'll appreciate the light weight more. And she is thankful I saved $300.

Loved the rant. Classic ;)

Same with me. I didn't know if I should just spend the extra and get retina, but now I feel better about buying the origional :D

The question isn't whether the price/storage is "worth it" - need to look at it differently. What is your actual need/usage and can you do okay in 32GB or would it be frustrating to have less than 64GB? In the end, the core question is what's the "worth" of avoiding that frustration (if it'd exist)?
