So now we have to spend more money on an expensive phone because of apple's defective design? That doesn't seem to make sense.

If this fixes the issue then perhaps apple should provide the case, why should I spend more money on something that should have worked in the first place.

Like I mentioned before, you can spend 100k on a Lingenfelter Vette and have to change the oil. It's called maintenance and protection.

I'm kind of curious as to how often people don't use any kind of protection on their iPhones. When the iPhone first came out, getting a case was a priority item due to the fact the phone could easily slip from your hands. The redesign of the 3G alleviated the slip issue a bit.

Still, I'd look for the case, issue or not. I wouldn't have even noticed an issue outside of this whole headline thing. What I think is a more noticeable issue is the iOS4 software being a bit less accurate with the proximity sensor. I've adjusted to it, but it certainly doesn't act like iPhone OS 3.

Someone should do a poll about the signal issue and/or maybe there is one and didn't see it but I've had NO signal issue, well, rather, I upgraded from the 3G and I have the same signal, bad or good, wherever, or more importantly because the bars aren't real, just indicators, of signal strength and call handling quality/strength, the iPhone 4 has in terms of a phone been as good if not just a little better.

So this seems like the "jump on" crap that happens or the "me too" isms where someone start perceiving something that isn't there. "Why, all these articles about the signal being weak... I think I'll start imagining my signal must be weaker too!" AT&T stinks up the joint for, well, everything, it's true, but they don't for myself and some other peeps with the new iPhone suck any more than they did before.

This whole this is being a bit blown out of proportion, and getting old.

Maybe start putting up some Mac hardware that isn't iPhone news too would be nice. No offense Arn (not that you'll read this) but you could change the site name to iphonerumors.com and it'd make more sense.

Last time I checked, a 76 out of 100 is a "C".

Doesn't make me feel better knowing no one else's kid got an "A" when mine comes home with a "C".
Apple's better than that, and for them to deny the problem, brush it off with "don't hold it that way" and "every cell phone does that" is shameful.

Maybe, but because childhood education normalizes to 76 = C = middling is a pretty dumb constraint on testing a product in the real (adult) world. The current best in technology is what it is. We are at 76.

No issue at all

I received my iPhone 4 a couple days ago and was curious to see if I could reproduce the signal issue. No matter how I hold the phone the signal strength is great. No dropped calls. Everything is just better. Love using this phone over iPhone 3G. Great product! Too many people out there with no life who love to inflate empty rumors. Lost respect for CR years ago. They remind me of the film critic(s) I always disagree with. We simply don't see eye to eye.

Nope.

Working antenna would have equalled more points, and recommendation by Consumer Reports.

I can't believe people are still taking time out of their day to work themselves up over an antenna. Return the phone, buy a case, or hold it without mashing the bottom left corner. I've never experienced this issue, and I own an iPhone 4. I can make it happen, but since it never happens to me "in the field", why the **** should I care? I don't. Enjoi.

Yeah, and except for that little gas tank problem, the Ford Pinto was a very safe vehicle!

If you've kept up with only 3% of the reports on this you'd know it doesn't take "trying" or a lab environment to make this happen. Depending on location, position, normal holding methods, etc. it happens every day in normal use for lot's of people.

The point of the rating is that it's a fatal flaw that can't be overlooked, much like the Pinto gas tank. It simply can't be overlooked. It's like having your daughter bring home a young suitor who's pulling a 4.0 GPA at Harvard, is heir to a billion dollar business, is great with kids, but also happens to have murdered their last three girlfriends.

You see this is the problem, I understand some people are not happy, and they want to express themselves but comments like

"eah, and except for that little gas tank problem, the Ford Pinto was a very safe vehicle! "
and
"it's a fatal flaw"
and
"It's like having your daughter bring home a young suitor who's pulling a 4.0 GPA at Harvard, is heir to a billion dollar business, is great with kids, but also happens to have murdered their last three girlfriends"

is just a mild form of insanity, it's so far over the top that it's not even funny, there is a very odd amount of hysteria around all this, I can't help but wonder what is the cause, Apple haven't hurt anyone or done anyone harm in any way, they are just a group of people that design and make things, they are very very good at it, they do make mistakes sometimes but so does every human being on the planet.

Now if you are so unhappy then take it back, stop using it and get something else, Apple give you this option freely, they don't want people to be unhappy, they try there very hardest everyday to give us all great products, there are people working there asses off everyday, and just to remind some people these are PEOPLE just like themselves, they are not super humans that owe the world in some way, they do there best, but its much much harder than you can imagine to deliver, but they do deliver in a big way a lot of the time, for me and many others they have done a great job with the iPhone4, but if you are unhappy take it back and move on, please just find something more worthwhile to attack, there are many injustices in the world that need people like yourselves to draw attention to it.

It must really piss off the phandroids that even with "the issue" the ip4 is still selling like hotcakes and stores can't keep them in stock. Over 2 million sold in just a few weeks? That's more than every android phone put together (all 20+ android phones). Talk bad about it all u want, it's still the best selling phone and nothing u can say will change that

I really want to see this issue solved in iPhone 4white , because im going to buy it.

Last time I checked a phone doesn't or shouldn't need lubricated in order to make a call. :p

I never had a case on my Blackberry (or any other phone for that matter). I certainly never had to take it to the dealership for "maintenance". We can just agree to disagree. :D

Ahh yes, but its apples and oranges we're dealing with. You're referencing spending money on car that requires periodic maintenance. What I'm saying is that we should not have to spend more money on the iPhone because apple created a flawed phone.

Take the car analogy. Wouldn't people be upset if the seatbelts failed to buckle properly. Wouldn't they be more upset that Ford, volvo, GM or who ever, denies any defect but recommends you spend $$ on a buckle adapter? Shouldn't they offer that buckle adapter for free because its a defect.

Likewise with apple. They produced a phone that has antenna issues and supposedly the bumper fixes that. Its not right that they say spend more money increasing their profits on a product that they should have produced defect free in the first place.

The iFlaw = at last, the media will be able to diminish Apple, which they've been trying to do for quite some time.

Industrial Design

This antenna thing is simply poor industrial design, as are MacBook Pros that are essentially razor blades.

Sure using cases/bumpers are good idea for ANY phone, but because of damage, not to allow it to function as it should...out of the box...it's just that easy®.

There is a difference between art and design. The former is for its own sake and the latter has to have a function. I don't think Jonny Ive would have gotten a passing grade in my industrial design classes, not when form trumps function.

For Apple to say that these two issues were never noticed shows that their QA process is broken or they're lieing.

PS. I'm not a troll, so back off. I like my phone; then again I use a bumper, but I shouldn't have to.

Built a site dedicated to this issue that has a poll. Be more than glad to share the site info with you if you want to send me a message. And I do have the issue, btw.

Clearly it is note worthy that a product who can't complete its core function well gets high ratings on other amenities, like a car that won't drive well if at all, but has a nice stereo. Or maybe the story is just being posted so MR can benefit from our frustration as we increase site traffic commenting about it, like I just did.

BTW: Apple is deleting discussion threads mentioning the Consumer Reports article off their website:
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/07/12/apple-drops-consumer-reports-discussion-threads-down-memory-hole/
Maybe you should post that, too.

I haven't kept up-to-date on iPhone news since defecting to the Evo, but these little bugs like the antenna problem that require constant updating for me to use my iPhone as an true smartphone are what finally let me to buy the Evo (along with ATTs dreadful coverage).

In order for me to use my iPhone freely as I do the Evo, I have to jailbreak it. If I jailbreak it, and it requires an Apple update, I have to restore it, update it, the wait for the next jailbreak update to use it as I desired. After 3 years of conforming to the Apple ecosystem, locked into service with ATT, it was time to go.

The Evo is not as polished as the iPhone, but it is a great phone nontheless. I expect even better from Android based phones in the near future.

It's much better than any other smartphone on the market. If you want purely a phone, get a nice Nokia or Samsung. They make wonderful phones with great reception and they are very inexpensive. I agree, it would be nice if the iPhone were a great phone, too but (face it) most of my communications with friends and work is through the internet not through voice.

Why? They are applying their rules of not allowing off topic discussion that are not of a support nature. Apple has done that for years.

The point was, it's the same kind of article, one to incite reactions with no actual benefit.

Many keep mentioning buying a case and though I have and I am not this tacky but let's play devil's advocate.

You buy a Ferrari, it is purely a work of art and then you have to cover all of the beautiful lines just so that it can run right.

The iPhone's new design is engineering art and has been advertised that way, now we must cover it and make it look like a 3G. Kind of ironic?
