Replace ‘Pro’ with “Flagship’ ... and there you go.

Pro means you’re a boss.

Like if I got the pro iPhone, my pics are gonna be the best in the game, my connection is gonna be the fastest, like no matter what I do, I’m gonna be on it. You’ve got Samsung boys using glitchy software, but if you’re a pro you’re on another level. You’re not gonna see bugs. You drop it, you know it’s not gonna break because it’s reinforced. Pros don’t have time to fix it. A pro user might be your company executive- someone with a position who doesn’t have time for slower model phones.

Basically things like that.

Its kinda like if you a dude with a MacBook Pro but it’s the 13”, you can’t assume he’s a boss. He might be in school still trying to get his degree then work his way up. But if you see a dude with a 16”, he’s probably business.

Like back in the day everybody in college had a 13”. It was no big deal. But more recently I meet people who are business and I see 15” everywhere in space grey. That’s the go to for those who got real things to do out there putting in work.
No.

Sony is really popular from what I’ve seen though. And I’m talking about the Instagram models whose paycheck depends on it so I would imagine they would be using to best camera while still be affordable and not costing like $30,000 lol

If you think instagram is the end-all, be-all of photography, you have no idea of what goes on in the world.

As an example, there are pictures circulating on the Nikon Professional Services and Canon Professional Services buildings from the 2016 Summer Olympics. I've spent time oogling the Nikon photos, and you'll see cameras like D5s(retail for ~$6K each) lined up with probably 50 in one photo. The same goes for the $10K each exotic super-teles like the 400mm f/2.8s and 500mm f/4s.

Both companies do on-site repairs at places like this, and the spares are their loaners while they're doing repairs.

Look on the sidelines of any major sporting event or really any other event where there are a lot of photographers present. Canon and Nikon dominate. Sony doesn't really even have a visible presence.

Aside from the poorer selection(and high price) of exotic lenses vs. Canon and Nikon, they are endlessly frustrating to use even for people who are experienced with Sony. I complain to no end about how bad Nikon's menus are, but Sony is many times worse.

At the high end too, Sony just isn't there with things like autofocus speed. They like to brag about the 20 frame per second A9, but the focus speed can't keep up with it. By contrast, the "slow" Nikon D5 at 12fps or even the D500 that I have at 10fps can-with an appropriate lens-generally track focus even at that rate. Canon's high end bodies(paired with good lenses) can do the same.

Tell me what bigger platform for photography is there on the face of the earth than instagram?

sure you’ve got National Geographic, but who reads it?

Everybody’s on ig all the time though

I've never been on Instagram in my life aside from seeing what my fiancée looks at on there occasionally.

You'll find bigger repositories of quality images at places like Getty or the Associated Press.

That's perfectly fine but if you think people are opening their Getty app over Instagram.

The gold standard of photographydoesn’t mean much if nobody uses it

There’s always exceptions to the rule. Like you know a guy who’s a boss but doesn’t use the latest and greatest. But from what I’ve seen if you’re making money, some kind of an executive, a boss, you’re gonna be using the latest gear.

That includes cars, clothes, everything.

The high life as they say.
I said initially that most people I know could easily afford the best phone but very few actually have the best phone. What does that tell you? It’s not hundreds of exceptions as not everybody is into phones. Those that want the best phone usually find a way to get it. Many, many successful people don’t buy the latest tech. I’m a boss where I work and I’m using an 8+. I think you’re very young and have a lot to learn about the corporate world.

It’s called delusion.

Very few have the best phone bc they don’t have the money to splurge another thousand bucks every year to buy the new one but if you’re swimming in cash you would.

I’m telling you these people can afford the latest iPhone if they wanted it. I could afford it if I wanted it but choose to spend my money on other things. Please stop with this simplistic status associated tripe. It’s an iPhone, not some unattainable multi million pound Patek Philippe watch for Christ sake.

I mean if you’re on the upgrade/trade-in program with your carrier it’s not hard to get the new phone every year or two. This guy is living on Planet Superficial X, though.

Yep-if we're talking a new Patek Phillippe Grand Complication every year or two-not only do you need disposable cash in the high 6 figures when it becomes available, but you need to build a "resume" with the brand. You do the latter by buying a couple of "lesser" watches like Nautiluses and Calatravas at $15-30K a pop, graduate to some complicated models at maybe $100K each, and then hope they deem you "worthy" to by a Grand Complication.

For most adults with a real job, coming up with $1K or so for an iPhone isn't a huge deal. Maybe you don't have that much disposable cash on hand, but someone who wants one can usually come up with that kind of money. I know a lot of folks who easily spend $25 a week at Starbucks-make your own coffee at home and you can buy an iPhone at retail every year.

Even at that, if you trade in the previous year's model you can get the price down to ~$600 or so from $1K. Put it on monthly payments and it's not a huge amount either.

I feel like this is a discussion I've had with the OP many, many times but I know some very rich people. Most of them you wouldn't pick out from a crowd-a lot of the reason why they're rich is because they buy good quality but not extravagant stuff. I know at least one multi-millionaire who still uses a blackberry(the old keyboard kind) and drives a 10 year old F-150.

You proved my point. You said you,“... choose to spend [your] money on other things.”

Well guess what? A person who could TRULY afford it would buy all those “other things” AND the latest and greatest iPhone.

Unlike you, they don’t have to choose.

Just reading your posts makes me sad for the current state of humanity.

Dude watches are not a thing

I guarantee if a guy in his 20s or early 30s goes on a date with a hot girl she’s not gonna know if it’s a Pateke Phillip or a Samsung.

You could probably even tell her it’s a dang onion ring you’re wearing and it might pass.

If you wanna stunt you’re better off spending that kinda money on luxury cars, clothes, iPhones, your crib, luxury travel like flying first class then posting on social media, and so on.

And, we're back in the superficial world.

BTW, I don't currently own any PPs-I sold my last one a few years ago(and made a nice little profit on it). If I want to "show off" I tend to wear watches that other watch people will find interesting and not necessarily high dollar stuff, although most days I grab my 1980s Rolex Datejust(currently off for service) just because it just feels "right" on my wrist, is as accurate as I would want from a mechanical watch, goes unnoticed by most people, but is recognized by people who know what it is.

What are you defining as a luxury car these days?

I don't need to "aim" for anything, thank you very much, and if I wanted something as "industrial" looking as the G Wagon I'd tend toward a JLR product, or specifically a Range Rover.

Modern BMWs are too bloated and too disconnected from the road for my liking. To me, the epitome of BMWs and the one I'd own in a second is an E39 M5. What's your take on those?

With that said, I GUARANTEE you that I get more attention every time I take my MG out than than you get with your typical 3, 5, or 7 series, C, E, or S class, or pretty much any Lexus. The BMW M cars and Mercedes AMGs get a nod from "car guys" but a pretty significant portion of the population doesn't have the first idea what they are. I've said many times that German luxury cars, especially the 3 and 5 series and the C and E class, are everywhere pretty much anywhere you go in the US.

riight most girls don’t know squat about cars except for the sign so no need to get the Amg or m3 version. They only look at the emblem. Just get a decent Mercedes and you should be good to go.

You don't get it...I'm not out to attract girls as I'm happily attached(and she grudgingly puts up with my car habit :) ).

I like cars that are fun to drive, hence why I like the E39 M5 and the other M cars. The E36 M3 has to be a close second. I actually dislike the fact that the newer ones aren't available with a manual.

Not too long ago, I had a hoot and a half spending a bit of time driving an E90 330i manual-it was about to be for sale and I contemplated buying it, but it belonged to a smoker and that kind of killed for me. That's a shame too as it's not a super common car.

Even more fun was the Z4 I looked at back in January-BMW's phenomenal NA I-6 coupled to a smooth as butter 6 speed. I briefly flirted with selling the MG and replacing it with that, but at the end of the day the MG is still more fun(and again I don't drive it for attention, but it certainly gets it).

I know it's incomprehensible to you that people can be REALLY passionate about cars without being badge whores-which frankly is all you come across as. BWM use to use the phrase "the ultimate driving machine" and it honesty was true. Drive one of the cars I mentioned above and compare it to a modern 3 or 5 series and you'll see what I mean. The newer ones are certainly faster/more powerful and do handle well, but are bloated and numb feeling compared to even ~10 year old BMWs. That's not to mention that give them a few more years and the grille will eat the front of the car.

Well then that's fine. Like I don't give a hoot about cars as long as it can be shown off and impress.

Sure I like black paint, rims, leather, wood grain, heated steering wheel, rearview camera, lane keep assist, radar cruise, but those are just the cherry on top. My rides got all that bc I tacked on all the bells and whistles.

Bottom line is that emblem though and that it looks like a mans car. Don't wanna get a sky blue or something.

You are definitely trolling now. I can truly afford a top of the range iPhone. When I said ‘choose’ I wasn’t referring to myself needing to make conscience financial decisions because I’m hard up for cash. I don’t bloody want the iPhone 11 Pro! Is that clearer?! Myself and my wife have good jobs, own our own house, drive nice cars and a £1k iPhone is totally irrelevant to our financial situation.

Grow up and stop placing pathetic superficial stereotypes to people. You’re making yourself look very silly indeed.

If it were free would you want it? Of course you would. The point here is that, for truly rich people who have a lot of cash, a 1000 bucks is basically "free" for them because they simply have so much. People who are counting every thousand are NOT the people I'm talking about. I'm talking about the people who don't NEED to count. The kind of person who doesn't care what the price tag says.

Why are you talking about those people though? You’re not one of those people and I doubt anybody here cares what those people want to spend their money on. You started the thread about an iPhone, something we all own and can relate to. When you finish school and get a good job I’m sure you’ll forget about building fake personas to attract girls. A lot of us are married, have children, decent jobs and couldn’t give a toss whether someone is impressed by our iPhones or not. Time to grow up.

iPhone 11 Pro(ductivity) Max.

You work all day on it if you need to as the battery is insane.
