Maybe her mom had turned on sms read receipts.
Don't think iOS supports even displaying that or delivery status for SMS (at least it didn't used to).

Yes, it does not.
It supports delivery and read receipts for regular SMS? Where does it say that?
Here is a shot of one of the messages in question. The other thing that I noticed is it says iMessage but the txt was to a droid?

That message was an iMessage... There is a header that reads "Text Message" *right below* the message that says "Read Sunday". That means that anything before that was iMessage, and the conversation is now just changing to SMS/MMS. Plus it says "iMessage" in the text entry box. I personally don't believe any of this because there's no way that a conversation would be iMessage if one of the devices involved was not an Apple device. I thought you were pretty much saying before that there were green messages with read receipts. Guess not.
A couple more shots:
Seems like some things are being sent as iMessages and those are the ones getting read receipts probably from some Apple device. The text messages don't appear to get read receipts on those screenshots.
All of those messages are from my roommates Sprint 5S to her moms Tracfone droid. My WAG is that when the msgs transition between the 2 networks the handoffs are being acked. ???
