They do but these screens aren't OLED or when they are, the 120hz comes with limitations, lower resolution, lower brightness and of course terrible battery life. I do think Apple should bring the standard phones to 90hz and we should already be talking about 144hz not 120 on the pro.
My point was that Apple makes a big deal out of features that have been pretty standard in even budget smartphones for years.

Like you can't have touch ID and face ID on the same device. There's no under display fingerprint sensor yet. There's still a chunky notch and we are in the 5th year now. 20W is called fast charging and even then you don't get the brick in the box. $100 phones have a 18W charger these days.

The list is really long, and it's unfortunate that steady iPhone sales have made Apple lazy and their innovation cycle is 5 years compared to 2 years on the Android world. 5 years makes sense on automobiles, not on consumer electronics. Sadly they have picked it from their Mac team, where it still makes sense because users don't upgrade computers so frequently.

It's shocking what all iPhone users allow Apple to get away with.

Scanning headline and thought this was saying there was a Pro model lacking ProMotion this year (like previous caveats around RAM or features limited by storage size).

Still haven't got the numbers straight, as so many rumours keep popping up for next year!

They should have called this years releases the 12s, 12s Mini, 12s Pro and 12s ProMax. Yea the names would be a little wordy, but it's just one year, and then next year they can go crazy on the proper "13" refresh with new body style, new 3nm chips, and all the other crazy additions.

Maybe there will be a iphone 14 mini, and this is the model that stays on 60 hz. We can dream right?
That was my initial thought, "Maybe they are keeping the Mini?" I think as long as they are making the appropriate amount and it's worth it to them financially, that Apple should keep making the Mini. If they ever did a Mini Pro with all the camera features, I'd strongly consider it and might actually get it. The difference between the Pro and Pro Max isn't huge from a 1 or 2 handed use perspective, but being able to use a Mini Pro with 1 hand would be nice.

Apple doesn't make "a big deal out of features", in the iPhone keynote they mentioned ProMotion for 2 minutes max. Apple doesn't really look at features, they look at devices holistically, they actually patented LTPO and Samsung Display produces the screens for them. They only release new features when these really add to the experience without compromises, they don't do tick box exercises. For instance, Xiaomi has a 100+ Watts charger for phones. That's awesome, but it means that you'll have to change the battery after 6 months. This is not something Apple would do. The iPhone 13 supports 25 Watts charging, Apple did not even advertise it.

I wonder if the mini will have much more adoption rate this year since they bumped the battery so much? I had the mini and loved the size, but the battery was hard to overlook. Gave it to my daughter as her first phone and she’s been happy.
I think it just comes down to size preference. I love my mini. The battery leaves something to be desired. But luckily since the battery is so small, it’s super quick to charge. I also missed the tele lens which is why I upgraded to the 13 pro.

That's exactly what I used to believe about them actually but now I know that Apple used to be a user centric company, but off late their decisions have been driven solely for increasing their margins and revenues.

The biggest one was the decision to remove power bricks without compensating users for it. Yes I know costs increased with 5G chips and $30 discount would have been odd but they could have compensated with something else, and they chose not to and made users buy fast chargers separately. The 2nd was their decision to drop audio jack from the iPad Pro. I mean it's a Pro device and not a tiny one that it has space limitations. They want everyone to buy Airpods which is fine, but don't push it down our throats.

Frankly speaking their only innovation that has impressed me in the last 5 years is their M1 chip and that is the reason I bought the Macbook Pro M1 as well as the iPad Pro M1.

But there's not a day I don't feel that they have been crippled down to please Apple's stakeholders. Macbook Pro M1 has only 2 USB C ports and its not functional as a desktop device without the need of a USB C hub and it has no dual display support without additional displaylink devices. It doesn't really qualify as a Pro device. I had to buy the LG Ultrafine 4K monitor to overcome this handicap.

Similarly iPad Pro without the audio jack doesn't qualify as Pro, I know the usb c adapter is not expensive but they should have shipped it in the box if they really had no option but to remove the audio jack.

And now that I've two USB-C chargers, I was looking to buy the iPhone 13 Pro Max, but they decided to keep the USB-C connector away for now, which again seems very odd because every single Apple device launched in the last 1 year has been on USB C.

Do we really need 120 hz??? On such small displays, even on the Pro Max it is hardly noticeable.

I'm genuinely curious about future iPhone naming...
Will be get numbers all the way? iPhone 38 will be something?
"Finally I'm upgrading from iPhone 28 to 32"

Maybe they'll do what they did with the iPad after a while and one year release it as "the new iPhone".
Then just go by screen size and model year after that.

After seeing how many rumors they got wrong this go 'round, I'm only going to believe 'em, when I see 'em!
If you were around the rumor sites in the early years of the iPhone, these recent rumors would seem pretty solid as many of them were right. For the first several years of the iPhone era, Apple was able to control the information better, they were smaller and there were fewer suppliers and thus fewer leakers. The rumors were mostly educated guesswork. Over the last few years, as the number of people involved in developing the phones increased, the number of leaks have increased and in most iPhone launches, we have pretty much know what was coming out before Tim took the stage.

A lot of people here have complained that the more recent launches are boring because we already know what we'll see.

This time, we got some surprises. Whether Apple was better at controlling the info, the pandemic limited some contact from leaking, or Apple was seeding false info to the leakers, there were quite a lot of surprised this time.

I have a hard time knowing which iPad people are talking about when I hear generation-4 or generation-5 for iPads. It's hard to remember which is the current one. the iPad pros do seem to use the year of the release as differentiator and that is a little easier: 2018 iPad Pro, 2020 iPad Pro

Its pretty sad at this point that apple doesn't include this as standard across all line up. Most android phones have them these days.
Apple had to get to where they could build and launch millions of phones with LTPO screens that met their standards for color and power usage. The iPhone scale means that it takes longer to get new tech into production.

Apple's fortunate that majority of iPhone users are completely ignorant about the state of tech on Android side of things. These 120hz displays were launched in 2019 and now even $200 devices have them.
Those cheaper phones are using lower quality panels with fixed refresh rates, dimming and high power consumption. Apple users are not unaware of other phones and we make choices based on the whole package, not a spec item.

It does make the scrolling much smoother on iPad Pros. It will likely help on these phones.

Besides the higher refresh rate, the big benefit of these screens is the variable refresh rate. That lets the phone drop the refresh drastically (10Hz) when the screen is not moving or updating saving significantly on the power draw. Since all models got the LTPO screens, they all benefit form the power savings. Only the pro models have the GPU cores to drive the high refresh rates.

this same screen technology was previewed on the recent years of Apple Watch and is the reason why it can do always on display. It is possible that Apple could add an always on display mode to their phones using this tech.
