I think they should do what EV makers are doing and preview products a year or longer before they begin shipping.
That’s fine if it’s a new product or product category (I’m sure they will preview their AR/VR devices long before they ship), but when it’s something that replaces an existing product in their line it’s a horrible idea.

If they specifically detailed these new MBPs a year ago they would’ve sold very, very few four-port 13” and 16” MacBook Pros over that period. Letting people know what’s coming kills the desire for what’s available now.

Huh? They are still selling Intel mac minis as the high end model. Its clear there is a high-end version coming. That doesn't undercut the lower end versions what so ever.
I highly doubt that Apple considers the Intel Mac Mini the “high end model”. At best they’d call it a legacy model for those that still need Intel processors. And, for Apple, price doesn’t equal “high end“ on the new computers. They’ll keep the Intel models more expensive to highlight the “deal” you get from an Apple processor.

again, what? You can get it with more memory on the remaining Intel models than the M1 models. It is the high end option.

You can always tell which reporters and analysts don't know what they are talking about by how much they push the name M2. There is no way they take an A14 generation core and bump the number up for confusing marketing. Maybe it won't be called an M1X, but I can't see them calling it M2
The first geek bench tests showing A15 prototype was last Feb, then we had Digitimes saying TSMC started production of the A15 bionic in May. The adding more cores (CPU/GPU) calling it a M1X was a earlier rumor. Now given the M1 is based off the A14, and the A15 bionic is in the works for Sept iPhone 13, it very likely to be a M2 based on the A15 bionic as it needs to address more memory than 16GB. Maybe we find out about this in a few days, or not, but these computers can’t have such a weakness of that limitation. ;)

MacBook Mini pmsl!!!!

Nah in all seriousness, if these new MBP models are coming I am expecting one of three things at this point:

1. No miniLED on any models at all
2. miniLED only on the 16” (maybe longer wait time on that model)
3. miniLED as an optional upgrade but longer wait times
It'll be mini-LED on the 16" only

If they didn't consider it a "pro-ish" model they would have replaced it with the M1 mini just as they did the MacBook Air and 21" iMacs. No other product that had a direct Apple Silicon replacement got to keep a "legacy model" in the catalog.

Would be funny if they only announced a 12" M1 MacBook.

(I'm actually in the market for one)
Actually, this would be a great consolation prize if the MBPs are delayed (they won't be). I've been hanging on to my 12" 2017. They need to replace that with an M1 model ASAP. It's the perfect size for travel. The redesign just needs one additional port to be perfect.

Huberty isn't a "real" analyst, she is an "AAPL Cheerleader," along with Munster, Ives, & Cramer.

They are "The Band of Four (AAPL Cheerleaders)".

Almost always trying to Pump AAPL !

Sure? But it’s only “pro-ish” because there is software that may not work, or at least not work fully, on an M1. The Intel Macs are specifically for people who need Intel processors to work with Intel software. Once most Mac software has ported to M1, Apple will drop Intel processors as quick as they can. The reason there aren’t Intel versions of some M1 Macs is to push adoption of the new processors for those who do not specifically need Intel.

So you’re saying that if you could buy a 16GB Intel Mac Mini for the same cost as the 16GB M1 Mac Mini you would choose the Intel. After all, it’s the “high end” machine, right?
No. He is saying that as a product line, the Mac mini has had a base model and a high end model with more high end options. the M1 Mac mini is the base model for that apple silicon product line. it would be in keeping that a high end apple silicon Mac mini could be released at any point and not 'over shadow' the baseline. two different machines. two different use cases. The fact that the Mac mini listings are currently co-mixed with intel and apple silicon makes it more complicated comparing machine to machine, but he was talking about the product line in general. In fact, I would argue that he confusing presence of a high end intel machine only applies MORE pressure to release a high end apple silicon, not less, as has been suggested by others here. I would NOT rule out a high end Mac mini in the near future.

Thats probably not the right way to look at it.
Apple has always staggered their CPU revisions.
A##X always follows months behind A##

M1 is an A14X on paper. There are multiple variations said to be coming using the same Ice Storm and Fire Storm cores, those are also A14-based. It is very likely Apple will be introducing M1 variants after the A15 is shipping in a phone. There is a lot of risk for them to launch all variations of a CPU all at once, and Apple has never shown that they have the engineering resources to do a ton of things at once (it doesn't take anyone 6 years to design an Intel Xeon motherboard for example), and high end CPUs is not an area they have a lot of experience with and things just don't magically scale. They need to take their time and make sure they get it right. So it will be A14-based.

If they call it an M2 it will be purely marketing, it would be a first. The A12Z came out after the A13. But it was still A12-based, they didn't randomly rename it to A13X.

Apple switching to all AS by 2022 is a very aggressive schedule, which I think is why we didn't see a redesign of the MBA, Mac Mini, 13" MBP, or (kinda) iPad Pros (they just stuck the M1 chip in all of these).

I was genuinely surprised the iMac was redesigned at all. The rumors for a redesigned larger-than-13" MBP seem legit, but beyond M1?

The elephant in the room is the Mac Pro. Will Apple surprise us in WWDC with a new chip for it? I doubt it.

Clearly Apple is taking care of the low-end first, and with the fall comes iPad, Watch, AirPods updates, so it's a lot.

I think that everyone expecting anything beyond M1 is going to be disappointed this year, and 2022 will be the year when we REALLY see big hardware changes.

This WWDC will kick ass software-wise.

Let's see. (I'll be happy if I'm WAY off).

I for one do not expect an announcement of a "Mx" based Mac this coming Monday, I do believe they will start shipping in Q4 though ... just saying

There was an iPhone 8 which really was just a spec bumped iPhone 7 with a glass back so who knows what Apple will do when it comes to marketing.

If they announce a 16" MBP, it would have to be MX/M2 right? Needs to support >16gb ram + multiple external monitor support.

My guess is the M1x 14” will be announced with LCD. The 16” will be the model with Mini-LED and will be out later this year.
