you....you...started a thread...to tell us..that you didnt exceed your data limit????? what ????

Huh. I was under the impression that GPS wasn't a cellular service. Am I wrong? All it's doing is grabbing the coordinates from the freely available gps satellites, right?

Anyway, you should have seen the location icon pop up if it was a gps issue.. What they really need is a data indicator. It sounds like it's just way too easy to request data without realizing it.

It would also be neat if the iPhone could track each app's data usage. There's no reason we should be have to commit to capped data blindly.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisted_GPS it does.

How bad were the lines? During opening weekend, I heard the wait time just to get in was around 7 hours.

I'm going in July. Can't wait!

An employee said they had seen the lines up to 170 minutes long for the Forbidden Journey ride. I waited 90min.

Not possible. Tagging pics with your location uses the GPS but it doesn't use any data. Try this: in network settings turn off cellular data and then take a pic. It will still be tagged with its location.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisted_GPS it does.

I don't get why someone would change their data plan and the complain about almost using up all of the data.

My point was that all that data (85MB) was used in 3 days when I normally wouldn't go over 200MB in 30 days.

The more important question is, where are these pics!?

I'll post some in the sticky threads for the pics and vids on the iPhone 4 soon.

i love unlimited data on giffgaff, did i mention you get the unlimited data + unlimited texts + 100mins for only £10 month

Lucky.

How sensational. The title drew me in, the story in further, and then I was, in fact, horrified.

Testing my iP4 yesterday on a drive to the Airport, I put on MR spy. 45 min there only. Checked it this morning, used 189mb down, and 34 mb up in <24 hours. :D

Thank God for the unlimited, even though I don't really use that much.

My god. What do you DO during that time to rack up so much data usage?!

Did you even try what I say? Go to Network Settings, turn Cellular Data Off and take a pic. It will still be tagged with location.

Assisted GPS uses Cell Towers to help it find its location, that's not the same as using data.
From your link: "Accurate, surveyed coordinates for the cell site towers allow better knowledge of local ionospheric conditions and other conditions affecting the GPS signal than the GPS receiver alone, enabling more precise calculation of position."

Using Assisted GPS doesn't mean it uses data. The position of cell towers help is find its location but it doesn't use any data. If you turn off data on your phone photos will still be tagged with location.

So you think the phone has an internal database of every cell tower location in the US?

you went to see harry potter.. and took 400 pictures?! lol wtf...

and you said you've been on at&t for over 6 months.. shouldn't you be grandfathered into the unlimited data like the rest of us?

and yes, data for each line is separate on a family plan

So you think the phone has an internal database of every cell tower location in the US?

Erm... no, it knows which cell tower it's connected to and that gives it its location. Some networks even have a cell phone tracking service that uses solely cell towers for localization.

WOW, I've never used over 350 MB and in the week I've had the iPhone I've used 29.3 MB Sent and 173 MB Received.

So glad I kept my unlimited plan!

OP... Next time I would suggest that you go into you settings and turn off all cellular data while you are taking your pictures for the day. That will force the phone to rely on only GPS and should still give you geotaging. It may not be as accurate (your more likely to lose satellite lock than cell service) but it won't run your data up either ;)

Just tested it. Won't geotag without the cellular data network turn on.

You've apparently completely missed the point of this thread entirely.

AGPS = GPS + cell towers

So, do those towers transmit the location of the GPS satellites via.....??? (Hint...the answer is data channels).

I'm still waiting for the vampire bunnies.

"It's got a mean streak a mile wide, and great big fangs!"

GPS will work without the data being turned on, it just locks in faster w/ AGPS. AGPS transmits the location of the GPS satelites to increase the speed of the lock. But it transmits that information over data channels.

You can do two things:
1) get notifications from AT&T via text when your at 60, 90 , 100% usage
2) when you do go over, just call AT&T and have them backdate your plan to pay for the whole 2gb usage.

Had MR spy going. Did a lot of speed testing on 3G, as we were having problems. Tons of email, Safari etc. I turned off wifi yesterday to do additional testing, so yeah I guess it adds up quickly.

I notice (since I run exchange as well) when you open contacts, it syncs a lot as well, even the calendar- so I think there is a lot of transmission going on more in iOS4 vs 3.

No, I did not do anything other than the above. Try it for a day, and see what you use.

It's easy to use allot of data on this phone depending on usage and apps.

I'm up to 1.85GB halfway through my month. I use the XM app allot and with the new Beejive app update, I left it on for about three hours yesterday while in a chatroom. I kept my unlimited data plan so I can use it and not have to worry.

That sucks. Just call up and tell them to upgrade your plan and tell them to make it effective today. You'll get some proration but it beats overages.

Sigh.

The iPhone obtains its ephemeris data via the data connection. That is the "assisted" part.

The "crunching" of the cell and wifi data happens on an assistance server also. That data is sent and received over the data connection.

If left alone for a sufficient length of time, in a location with sufficient signal, it can and will get the necessary ephemeris data from the satellite download to make a lock. This would be a non-assisted GPS lock, based solely on satellite data.

But that's slower, so the phone will default to assisted (which includes some data traffic). Most applications of location based services on a cell phone want quick *bang* location updates. If it took minutes each time to wait for satellite ephemeris data and get a location, people wouldn't use it.

It shouldn't be enough traffic to have a significant effect on the end of month data quota, but there *is* data traffic related to aGPS use.

If the phone is choosing to use wifi and/or cell tower data in addition to this, that's even more data traffic. The "assistance server" (I believe the iPhone uses Skyhook for wifi data and a Google service for cell towers) receives a data upload from the phone, crunches it, and sends info back.

But still, it shouldn't really be that much data.
