I don't get why someone would change their data plan and the complain about almost using up all of the data.

That was my thought. Wasn't this board filled with posts just a few weeks ago about the increasing data requirements of various iPhone apps, etc.?

200MB is NOTHING.

I went to LA to go apartment hunting and all i used was for like a total of 20 minutes, took 100mb... :(

I can see that...Nowadays, you can suck up 100MB in no time...

BTW, on a separate note, have you tried westsiderentals.com? Best place I have found to find an apartment in LA....all the ones that you won't find listed elsewhere.

AGPS = GPS + cell towers

No, the GPS on the iPhone uses AGPS in order to find a relative location then uses the actual GPS chip to hone in on your location within about 10 ft. Or whatever it is.

GPS uses a chip to find your location.

AGPS uses wifi hotspots and cell towers to TRIANGULATE your APPROXIMATE position.

That's why using AGPS + GPS gives you a much faster lock as opposed to using a GPS alone.

I was really tempted to switch to a lower cost data plan...

I was really tempted to switch to a lower cost data plan and thought it wouldn't be too bad to pay less monthly and would likely have an overage or two annually but overall I though I would be saving. My monthly usage for the last 6 months was all under 200mg with one month over 250mb so I was almost willing to take the change on the new lower cost plans.

Well, I just looked at my AT&T account because I was curious about my data usage since upgrading and my total usage so far this month is 417mb (5 days left in billing cycle). So after checking my phone it appears that I have used 216mb since I got it at noon last Thursday...roughly an entire months usage in about 5.5 days and I still have 5 days left.

I was afraid this iphone would use more data and was going to monitor it for a month or two and then make a decision. Guess the $15/mo plan is out...and since the 2gb plan is only $5 less than the unlimited it looks like that's where I'm staying.

I feel sorry for those who were tempted with lower prices and the "70% of customers fall under 250kb" shortly before the new iphone dropped...I was almost one of them!

No, A-GPS uses GPS (satellites) in addition to tower location information. Pure GPS only uses satellite. Cell tower triangulation is not A-GPS.

The "GPS" in "A-GPS" still stands for "Global Positioning Satellite."

Edit: I have to correct myself...The 'S' in 'GPS' seems to often stand for 'System,' but I still stand by my assertion that A-GPS is not just triangulation.

That 200mb is nothing.

I really hope AT&T changes that to 500mb at least, esp given the amount of data the iPhone 4 pulls vs past versions.

How many people really use over 2gb per month? I went on vacation with the 3GS and didn't go over 500mb used for the whole month. My regular usage is around 200mb. I'll put the $5 back in my pocket per month. Plus if Verizon is really getting the iPhone there will be more competition with pricing.

People need to use more wifi and manage there data usage better....

Wifi isn't available everywhere... And I use almost 6gb a month, but if I cut out of the streaming music it would still be almost 3gb a month just with data including tethering. And that is with an iPhone 3G...

I've used well over 2GB most months and most of it is while I am at home. Sure I could use my WiFi and I get almost 14Mbps on that on my computer. I am also paying $30/Month for my 3G so I am going to use it. It's fast as well, 3.5Mbps so why not? Yesterday, I was using my phone to tether just for no other reason than to just do it. For $30 a month, I'm using it.

Why don't you come back and report your usage on iP4 and not 3GS. This devices eats data more, as I used crap on my 3GS and this one sucks it- I think on WIFI too  J/K

Is it available at your house? I could see some people having no Internet and just using their iPhone and tethering with mywi but seriously you don't think they'll catch on? It's only a matter of time.

Be responsible people.

I've only used about 20mb on my iPhone over AT&T since Thursday. I do email pushed and maps occasionally but for GOOG 411 cuts down on data. Twitter, Reeder, etc.

If you include my house then it would be almost 30gb a month. I don't use my phones internet at home as I have a laptop for that with WiFi at home that is way faster than iPhone's internet w/ tethering.

But since your paying for it might as well use it, whats the point in only using 100mb when you pay for several gb's of data... Just a waste. So yes if I were to check something out real quick like what the weather is or tv listings then I would use the cell network and not wifi

Well get out more then :p

I am out but usually I'm busy doing what I'm out for. Maybe I'll glance at an email or what not, but my face isn't always in my phone.

Not possible. Tagging pics with your location uses the GPS but it doesn't use any data. Try this: in network settings turn off cellular data and then take a pic. It will still be tagged with its location.

I thought turning 3G off would still let EDGE go through... Or are you talking about the airplane mode?

You are one of the reasons why the towers are over taxed. I hope you don't live in my area....

This is exactly why I will keep my unlimited plan, even though I use nowhere near the bandwidth that is allowed on the less expensive plan--

As more and more apps use services in the background, more and more bandwidth will be consumed.

I would rather "overpay" for my unlimited plan now, than get a surprise bill at some point in my future.

+1 Plus I don't trust things like reading my water meter, electricity meter and data downloads. There is no way for us to contest charges.

My wife and I just got the iPhone, and I decided to go with the 200 MB plan for both of us, and watch our usage carefully, and see how it goes. So in this cycle (28 days left) I've used 9 MB and she's used 4.5.

Fortunately right now we can do just about everything on wifi, and when not on wifi, we stay away from the streaming and app downloading. I wish I had the option for the unlimited so I could not worry about it at all, but if we decide to move up to 2 GB, it should be more than enough.

You can monitor data usage through ATT's app or via text message notifications.

2gb is plenty for a person that should be using wifi.

I'm anal retentive as hell, and have access to wifi easily. I could probably stay within 200 MB if I'm very careful. The wife is harder to reign in. :)

But even so, I really think the only thing that gets one past the 2 GB is the streaming audio and video, so it's simply a question of not doing that when off wifi.
