why the restart? i thought using a UNIX OS meant that you never have to restart?

Because on a UNIX os, you have deamons which have to restart, and it seems this update does not restart the deamon itself, so you have to reboot your phone to restart the deamon

I have the original iphone and once again cannot use the features of those who wait. This sucks:mad:

My first car didn't have A/C or a DVD player. Those are pretty much standard nowadays. Should I take my car back to the dealer and complain?

Your iPhone still does everything it did when you bought it. You weren't promised unlimited compatibility, where you?

'Broken.'
LOL.
They "fixed" something they knew would get them into enterprise faster.

And the problem with that is? Obviously this "Active sync issue" cannot be that big of a deal for most people. Besides a few random threads here and there, I'd never heard about it really before now and I use Active Sync with my iPhone 3GS everyday....

Let it go. Eleven times in a single thread is more than enough. Are you a Microsoft shill or something?

I am responding to posts asking why not upgrade to 3.1

I simply said I would like to continue to get my work exchange email.

i had to search online since it was my first time too..

simply go download the .ipcc that Diddy posted.. then remember where it saved.

TO be extra careful this is what i did after reading over a post on a different forum.

quit itunes.

go to terminal and type in: defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

then hit enter...

open itunes... then select your iphone on the left. over on the summary tab, hold down "option" while clicking the update button next to iphone firmware. NOTE: ive done this on a mac using the latest itunes, an im not sure what button you hold down on windows to do the equivalent. probably alt, but im not sure. This gives you the ability to choose a custom install file from a location other than where iTunes is programmed to read from

select the .ipcc file you just downloaded... then click Ok.

give it 5 seconds. them boom. youre done.

reboot the iphone. and send an MMS.

This isn't working for me-I can SEE the ipcc file but not select it. Mac OS X SN. Thanks!

TRIPLE POST?!? Sorry! Never had that happen to me on MR before.

anyone know???

anyone know... does the carrier update file HAVE to come from the computer you sync to all the time? or can i just connect to any itunes to get this update?

I have mine done since I have my laptop, but roadtripping with 4 other guys this afternoon who don't have their sync computers with since they have desktops they sync to, and they want to update from my lappy before we roll.

Thoughts? ideas? anyone?? :) TIA!!

If you are on a Mac, connect your phone to iTunes. Hold option+click and select the 5.5 IPCC file. It should update your phone. You might have to type something into TERMINAL beforehand. Here's the command:

For Mac OS X:

Close iTunes if it is open
Start Terminal (Applications > Utilities)
Run the following command: defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

When I was running firmware 3.0, the above sequence (modify iTunes with Terminal command, and then option+click to install an .ipcc file) was EXACTLY what I did to enable tethering. And that "hack" was the ONLY hack I had ever done to my iPhone. And when I installed firmware 3.1 over that hack, I had a LOT of problems with my iPhone. Problems that an AT&T level 2 tech IMMEDIATELY identified by asking flat out if I had installed a carrier settings hack.

I'm not suggesting that nobody do the above. I'm only saying that I will never manually do an update like that again. The hassle of fixing my iPhone (restore as a new iPhone) was just too big!

Do you have to have iTunes 9.0 to get this to work cause I didn't want to upgrade that out of fear that it would mess up my ability to jailbreak and when I type in the command

It doesn't work...the command is not found and the ipcc file is greyed out...

mms

Maybe its the area im in, who knows.. I've updated the carrier settings, rebooted.. and that all works, but every mms i attempt to send out fails....
this is with full 3g singal... any ideas?

Not true.
3.1 breaks MS Exchange Active sync (on stock, non-jailbroken phones) leaving MANY enterprise users without their work email in the mail app.

It doesn't really break it right? It just starts being honest about what security it uses. So if your IT guys don't mind having a 3G connecting they should lower the security setting.

You realize you'll never be able to upgrade your iphone again, right?

I would suggest googling the issue and finding out a little more about it then.

Thanks! Seems to work on my jailbroken 3.0.1

The link should download as an ipcc file not zip. If using Safari you may need to go to Safari, Preferences and uncheck "open safe files..." Otherwise use firefox.

Upgrade instructions/ MAC:

MAC OS X:

1. Close iTunes.
2. Open Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal).
3. Run the command: defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

4. Open iTunes & plug in your phone.
5. Click on your phone in iTunes(under device settings).
6. MAC OS X: hold alt and click “Check for updates." Point to the file location where you saved the download.
7. Reboot phone
8. Go to Settings, General, About. Scroll down to "Carrier" It should now read AT&T 5.5

Well, it would have been nice if the device didnt lie to begin with.

Hey, iphones had to get into enterprise quickly though, right?

I've sent 2 pics that went out fine, but the person didn't receive them on the other end. Do you have to update carrier settings to receive pics?

now let's hope that verizon gets the iphone

What...and go thru all of these growth pains again?...this time with Verizon? I hate to say this, but by the time that Verizon gets the iPhone (won't be until Verizon has a full nationwide 4G nework), AT&T's network will be in a much better shape to support the iPhone's unique bandwidth requirements than Verizon will be on THEIR Day 1.

Let me get this straight, this only works with people who have iphones? I can only send MMS to someone who has an iphone too?

If you want to upgrade your carrier file without running 3.1 just do this:

1. download the ipcc file from the post earlier in the thread

2. If on a Mac type this in terminal while iTunes is closed:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

3. Open iTunes and attach your phone.

4. Decline the upgrade to 3.1 prompt.

5. "Option" click the Update button and select the ipcc file that you previously downloaded.

6. It will only take a second to apply the file. Once it's complete disconnect your iPhone and reboot your phone.

7. enjoy!

I just tested this process on my phone and it worked flawlessly.
