BS that they don't support the original iPhone. Facebook and using email both work fine with the camera and Edge. Even the cheapest POS flip phone from 5 years ago with a camera and Edge supported MMS. I understand the marketing move to get people to buy new phones. But that should be based on new features such as speed, better camera, GPS, etc. and not prohibiting the use of existing features in the 2G iPhone.

If you do not want to update, but still want MMS, you can get the carrier file which a few users have posted downloads for, and install it. To do this, download th ipcc file, plug in your iPhone to iTunes, go to the iPhone and hold Option key (SHIFT on a PC) and click "Update". You should now be able to browse to where you downloaded the carrier file. Reboot your phone, and you are all set. Hope this helps some of you.

I got the ipcc file alright but when I use SHIFT (I'm doing this on a PC not my Macbook) and click update, iTunes only looks for a ipsw file. I cannot see the ipcc file I put on my desktop in the directory and there is no option to see it in the file type dropdown. Am I doing something wrong? I have a 3G, 3.0 (for tethering) not JB.

thats why it just works, because they don't support jack except their newest hardware. Silly Mojo, didn't you know that only the newest hardware from apple can support MMS

I can send MMS messages to friends on AT&T, but for whatever reason MMS messages don’t make it to my Verizon (previously Alltel) friends.

Sending.....

Ok, I've done the carrier update and restarted the phone. The camera logo is there but the pictures will not go through. I goes about 80% and it says "sending..." but it never goes and the red button shows up! I don't know what is wrong with this??!?!? What is the solution??? Is this a problem with software or AT&T issue?????:confused::confused:

Your solution is to sit around and wait for AT&T to unscrew them self. Its been hit or miss, with man more misses. Its been a few years since the Iphone has been out without MMS, whats another week or so even if AT&T broke their promise on the date?

I got a $20 that says Apple will not shame themselves by using this feature in a T.V. commercial as a selling point.
The rest of the world would say" WTF ? You mean this is some new innovation?!?!"

I don't think the majority Apple will put a mms feature in their commercials more likely AT&T will.

still waiting...

still not working for me here... starting to wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I originally had a first-gen iPhone before replacing it with a 3G in march...

harumph.

Finally broke down & gave AT&T customer support a call... on the phone with them now.... they've tried taking off/readding my texting plan, turning off my phone & reregistering it with the switch, all no dice so far... I think I may have them baffled....

Will update y'all as I find out more...

Okay... update... just got off the phone with AT&T... the first customer support person tried the previously mentioned fixes, they didn't work, and they forwarded me on directly to tech support. I talked with a really helpful guy who just reconfirmed all that we'd done... and we found the culprit. if you hit #*06# on your keypad, it gives you some sort of internal AT&T routing ID (forgive me for my ignorance...) anyhoo, that number didn't match up with the number that AT&T had in their system... the number in AT&T's system was that of a 2G iPhone. Like I was guessing before, I'm pretty sure this is because I first opened my AT&T account with a first gen (2G) iPhone, and then in March upgraded to the 3G. I guess the AT&T system never updated properly...

Anyway, the tech guy escalated my case to the west region tech office, and I'm supposed to get a call back/resolution by the 30th at the latest. (although he said that 24-48 hours was more likely) This isn't an isolated case, as he also mentioned that he'd handled 12 of the same problems in the past 4 hours...

So, in summary, if you already have MMS working fantastic... If not, and you're getting the 90% and then failure thing, give AT&T a call & best of luck...

For those folks with a 3G or 3GS with the problem of AT&T never updating the account when their plan was updated from a 2G iPhone, how are these people using 3G internet on the device?

good question... wish I knew. Far as I know I've been browsing with 3g speed, even though my phone was registered as 2g with the network... I guess I'll see....

AT&T doesn't differentiate EDGE from 3G when it comes to data.
It's just data.

The data plan on a 1st gen iPhone is just that, a "data" plan, not an EDGE data plan. Same thing with the 3G and 3GS, it's a "data" plan, not a 3G data plan.

I had to do a a Restore and a Fresh install. Basically setting up my phone as new and my MMS has been running great for the last 2 days.

Wait until we hear officially what tethering will cost us when it becomes available. Then the REAL whining will begin!

For real! Our only hope and big plus that we have is, all us iPhone users actually carry a lot of weight when it comes to making our voices heard and AT&T being forced to listen and consider!

#*06# resulted in "Error performing request Unknown Error"

Just FYI: I tried using the IPCC file that was posted here, and it caused my phone not to connect to AT&T's network here in north Texas. I confirmed that "AT&T 5.5" was the Carrier version, after a very lengthy restart time (~2 minutes). However, I just got "No service" at the top of the phone. Luckily, I still had my previous 5.0 IPCC file and was able to repeat the steps to put 5.0 back on there. Now, I have a connection to AT&T once again.

I've gotten the text message announcement from AT&T about MMS, but I still have yet to get prompted in iTunes for the new carrier settings file (after 3 days since the original text message).

Oh well, it's not like I'd use the send MMS feature anyway, when I have MobileMe email on the phone. Would be nice to receive the messages from friends, though, instead of going to the stupid AT&T website to retrieve it with a password.
