I really doubt its Terabytes.. MMS messages aren't that large.

but they add up. For example I pulled an MMS my sister sent me today. It was 189KB (1200x1600 which is about 2MP). Since the first iPhone was 2 MP and the current one is 3MP. I am going to up that size to 200KB for the average to make the math easier.

At 200Kb per MMS means for ever 5 MMS sent is 1 MB of data.

So for every 5000 MMS sent is 1 GB of data. so for ever 5 Million sent is 1 TB of data.

So even my Terabyte could be wrong. It could even by a Petabytes in the data spike AT&T is dealing with. A number that will drop like a rock after this weekend.
So yes I was wrong. It turns out that it is LARGER than I originally though.

Please note the example I was giving you was work off a camara being 2 MP. Considering the 3G and 3GS both have larger camara than that the data spike jumps even faster.

Still don't understand why my First Gen iPhone won't be able to do it. My 3 year old Sony W810i could MMS 3 YEARS AGO!!!!

+ ~ 7 million owners of first gen iPhones. I say boo to both Apple and AT&T on this one. My Razr did MMS just fine, but my $400 "smart" phone is somehow incapable? "I'll believe that when my s*** turns purple and smells like rainbow sherbert."

How to sync?

I have successfully sent and received a video MMS. I can save the video clip in my camera roll. The question is I tried to sync it back to my computer, it did not show it in the import list in iPhoto. Has anyone tried that yet?

No. A 3G is NOT only $49. It is $49 PLUS the gigantic leap in monthly fees.

2G: Unlimited Data + 200 Txt = $19.99/mo (plus tax etc)
3G(S): Unlimited Data + NO Txt = $30.00/mo + $5 additional for 200 Txt = $35/mo

Still think a 3G is ONLY $49? Why would I pay nearly twice as much PER MONTH for a plan that has LESS text messages and horribly spotty 3G coverage? I know the answer! Now I can use it to send MMS! Even though my Verizon brick from 2003 could do that.... and it didn't even have 2G.... oh man Apple/ATT.

I don't understand what the problem is people. I thought most of you were relatively smart.

YOU DON'T NEED TO UPDATE TO 3.1

Just download the carrier file that is floating around the internet, follow one of the 100's of tutorials, and just update the carrier file!

It is very simple. I've had MMS for a week now and I still was able to keep 3.0.1 and all of my jailbroken goodness.

Unless apple really drops something REVOLUTIONARY in an update, I think i'm set.

I got a 25% discount from my buddy that worked at AT&T. So its worth it for me buddy. And guess what? If you used one for a week, you'd be willing to pay the difference. And btw, I could give two ***** about mms. You have NO IDEA how much **** you can do with this phone.

I get 19% discount from ATT for being active duty military. Either way, I'm not gonna pay twice as much for 3G internet that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Ultimately that's just my preference, but I've used the 3G quite a bit, which only confirmed my desire to not overpay for an underwhelming increase in internet speed. I agree, I too will probably never use MMS; I just think it is unacceptable that Apple can't support such a barebones basic function on the original iPhone.

A 3G is 49$ now... no excuse to still be on the regular iPhone

Umm... I paid $400 for a "smart" phone. I reasonably expected that this BASIC feature of even the cheapest phones on the market would be enabled at some point. I refuse to be forced into an early upgrade.

In other words it's not an excuse. It's a valid reason.

nice sig.....?

3g is "spotty" if you live in the middle of nowhere.

I have full reception literally ALL the time in Minneapolis.

I'm from chicago, which seems to have good coverage as well.

I was in cleveland a couple weeks ago and it worked fantastically as well.

whats with this "spotty 3g" BS? If you don't live in the middle of nowhere you're fine, and if you do you have far fewer reasons to even have the data package in the first place.

I don’t care what kind of update they bring.. if you can’t unlock/jailbreak, it’d 3.0 for me. :)

0xe800003d fix

hello I have a 3GS with 3.0.1 jb and I was receiving the 0xe800003d error. I tried this fix and it solved my problem
***I TAKE NO CREDIT FOR THIS THIS INFORMATION, FOUND ON MODMYI VIA STEALTHBRAVO MANY THANKS!!!****

“iTunes could not update the carrier settings on your iPhone. An unknown error occured (0xE800003D)”

Then SSH to your iPhone and change permissions in the /private/var/mobile/Library/Carrier Bundles/ folder.

Type this in terminal:

chmod a+rw -R /private/var/mobile/Library/Carrier Bundles/

My first car didn't have A/C or a DVD player. Those are pretty much standard nowadays. Should I take my car back to the dealer and complain?

Your iPhone still does everything it did when you bought it. You weren't promised unlimited compatibility, where you?

This is quite possibly the most horrible excuse for an analogy I have ever read. To do what you suggested to a car would cost the auto maker thousands of dollars for each unit.

To enable MMS on the 1st gen iPhone would cost apple roughly $0.0001 per unit.

You guys srsly. The Verizon iphone is coming. Just wait till next year. Half the users will jump ship and those who stick with the sinking ship (ATT) will finally get good service!...just be patient; because Apple will be on multiple carriers pretty much exactly when predicted. ;)

Really. How can they not want to soak up all that unused bandwidth. JUST BE PATIENT. iPhone on other U.S. carriers is coming, and will be reality within a year. Likely by next July. All arguments against this are irrelevant. I know a guy. Srsly.

Yeah. I know its all speculation and whatever. Believe what you want. ATT did not renew their exclusivity. Also 4g is on the horizon. And the iPhone is known to be mysterious when it comes to updates. We are going to see a multi carrier (US) 4g iPhone from Apple in summer '10. And I will be basing my purchasing decisions on this assumption.

Just think about it is all I ask.

Has anyone who's mms isn't working also have their phone on a business account or have the business sms plan on their phone?

I still can't get it working. Even after a restore and many other attempts.

Get ahold of AT&T because it's possible there's an account setting they need to tweak. I've heard of a few people here who needed that done to get MMS working.

"and it didn't even have 2G..."

Yes, it did. If it did MMS it did.

1G - Analog
2G - Digital with data speeds less than 144kbps
3G - Digital with data speeds greater than 144kbps (technically, EDGE and 1xRTT are therefore 3G but since they barely meet this definition and are bolt-on improvements to 2G technologies instead of being designed from the ground up as 3G, and are vastly slower than UMTS and EVDO, they're VERY VERY rarely called 3G - usually 2.5G or 2.75G)

I'm on a business account and my iphone nor my wife's iphone shows a camera after we update the carrier settings and restart our phones. I was going to restore until I read your post, so now I'll just contact att instead and see if they need to do anything on their end. Hopefully it will all work out! Thanks

It works for me

Ok, so I guess I have to decide if I want to keep my exchange account for work, or be able to use MMS.
(3.1 is required for MMS. 3.1 on the IPhone 3G breaks exchange active sync.)

Thanks for putting me in that situation Apple!

I use 3.1 with exchange, no problem, and MMS is working great.

I think the point here was that discounts (FAN accounts) DO apply to the iPhone 3G(s) data plan while they DO NOT apply to the "original iPhone" plan. So, with your's 19% discount you're looking at

$20 for original iPhone data plan
vs.
$30 less 19% discount = $24.30 for iPhone 3G(s) plan

plus of course an SMS/MMS package if you previously only used the 200 rolled into the original iPhone plan (if you already upgraded to unlimited then your SMS/MMS cost is the same regardless of which model you are on).

For $4.30 a month, you get 3G data & data access plus MMS. Not a bad upgrade if you ask me.
