AT&T is full of sh*t regarding their 6G technology. It’s not an established standard by global telecoms and is easily 10 years out. It’s marketing hype similar to their 5Ge claims. Which by the way, Verizon’s 4G was faster and had better coverage. Even T-Mobile had faster 4G speeds.

In addition, At&T got their wrist slapped by a number of marketing watchdogs who said their 5Ge claims were misleading.
Verizon has always danced all over AT & T when it comes to service, price, you name it. 👍

I think the big takeaway from the event this year will be the iPhone Mini. I really don't think most people care about 5G given how fast LTE is for most of us.
People will care very much if Apple gives them a tiny phone and price it at $750.

Apple will have to hit the Marketing hard to sell a phone with a smaller screen size than the 11, charge $50 more than $699, and then convince people that it's a good buy.

Case in Point: I think they marketed well the Apple Watch SE at $279.

Wow where do you live?

Houston Texas here (metro, not suburban). There are certainly plenty of people around here who aren't taking the quarantine seriously, but overall it feels like things are pretty sedate. I go for runs outside every day, and just judging from street traffic things are still pretty locked down here overall. I live with someone who is immunsupressed, so we're not taking any unnecessary chances. So, at least for me, new iPhones aren't exciting at all. I put that money into a better desktop computer.

I think they're finally starting to learn that while Wall Street has mostly RE-bounded, Main Street is still hurting BIG time !

Even here in La Jolla & the greater San Diego area, most smaller service companies are hurting BIG time !

If the 6G service is the same as the 5G service they rolled out, which was 4G service they decided to rebrand until a judge put an end to it, then AT&T is working on 5G along with "creative marketing."

And I'm busy building 9G and my friends, they really are looking into 12G..but yeah...might be years before you see it. I mean, it's hard. And 14G, don't even talk about that.

I don't have access to the paywalled article that is the source, but I think this is a little unfair. All the major equipment manufacturers and many big carriers have started research activities on 6G (see e.g. here), just like research on 5G was started years before it became a standard. I don't doubt that AT&T has some engineers working on that. Don't mix them up with AT&T's marketing department, which is responsible for things like "5Ge".

I just wish they would fix their current buildout. Been an AT&T customer for over 15 years, recently had to switch to Verizon due to the sudden lack of service lately. In my area AT&T has always been decent, even in my travels, but within the last 3 months, nothing but dropped calls all over the place (for me and some co-workers), I finally had enough as I can't deal with it and moved over to Verizon. No dropped calls yet and in places I have been traveling where I had zero signal with AT&T, I have signal now. Not bashing AT&T by any means, but before they get this 6G going, maybe work on the current infrastructure.

Working in att mobility hq was Interesting. My favorite part of the day was eating in the cafeteria. Occasionally the head of marketing or ceo would eat with us peasants. Normally, though, half the cafeteria was full of McKinsey and Accenture consultants with their different colored badges.

I bet they received a research report from McKinsey telling them to not expect wild sales due to 5G. That’ll be 1 million dollars please!

To me this sounds like ATT making a cop out. They’ve been doing shady stuff since the 4G and 5Ge logos are nothing but marketing lies. I switched away from them years ago and wouldn’t trust anything they say.
Ya. Looking for excuses.
5G Nationwide service? Having a town of 12,000 with 5G so you can check the box for coverage in a state. Lame.

When people complain about 4G, I never hear complaints about speed. The complaints are generally that a signal isn't available everywhere. On rare occasion, I hear a complaint about low data caps.

It doesn't seem to me that the 5G deployment will do anything to solve either of those issues.
5G can help with these issues (e.g. by making new spectrum available for cellular networks and increasing spectrum efficiency). But of course a lot depends on the carrier's actual deployment.

There are also a lot of changes under the hood that consumers don't necessarily see, that are expected to enable new kinds of services and scale up to massive amounts of IoT devices.
