You can buy from apple stores and return the old iphone to any local AT&T stores. Believe me. I did it today. I bought one from AT&T online and one from a local apple store with AT&T Next Year Plan(24 months). I returned two iPhones to a local AT&T store. They inspected the phones and gave me two receipts. There wasn't any hassle. No question asked.

PS: They needed IMEI numbers of new iPhones to do the trade-in.
When you say two receipts, you mean you will be getting the (up to) $650 credit on your Next bill for each? So if an Apple store has the phone you want, you can reserve it and come in and buy it on Next? Wow.

You can use the credit for up to 5 lines with next upgrades to iPhone 7 per account. 650 per line

Interesting. I don't believe what you were told is correct since it contravenes the intention of the promotion, but miracles can happen.

I will apply the principle of "the second mouse gets the cheese" to that one though...

But does it? I guess the thinking would be that people would still stay until they got all their credits coming to them. And if not then at that point AT&T comes ahead a little and doesn't pay back additional credits...

I could be wrong, of course, but I don't believe that Apple stocks both locked and unlocked versions of every AT&T & TMO phone model and configuration. We don't see people complaining that they went in to buy a new phone (full price or financed) and Apple only had the *other* version available. Nor have I heard of any reports of buying a full price TMO phone to use on AT&T and then finding it was a locked version. It's this that leads me to think the locking occurs during activation in some manner.

Again, I could certainly be wrong. While that's a rare thing, it has happened a couple times. :D

well, i went to the apple store today. the first guy i talked to thought that even if i bought an unlocked phone, that ATT might be able to remotely unlock it once it goes on next. the other guy wouldn't really answer my question - i asked him if i could buy the verizon version and put it on next (so that i'd have the qualcomm modem). he got all sidetracked trying to tell me that the ATT $650 promotion was not real and trying to get me to sign up for apple's installment program instead. i got tired of arguing with him so i just let him sell me the ATT version of the phone.

at this point i'm still waiting for my T-mobile sim to see if my unlocked ip6 is now locked.

Did anyone here buy a phone at apple (via ATT Next) and then go to ATT with your trade in and get the 650? I can't get a single employee of AT&T who seems to understand their own promotion. I had to school a guy today who tried to tell me it was only for if you were buying the 32gb. They are clueless! So he told me I had to buy it AT TT and if I bought from Apple I could not trade in my 6 plus at AT&T for 650. I'm so closed to just buying from AT&T and taking the $250 trade in seeing as how I'll upgrade in a year anyways so I only get $325 of that 650. AT&T has got to get a clue. Their employees are AWFUL.

I did just that. Purchased a MB 128+ at the Apple Store and financed thru AT&T Next. Traded in my 6+ at the local AT&T Store. Should be a small increase in my bill since I opted for a higher priced phone. I plan to take full advantage of the promo since the new device will get passed on to the wife next year.

Just did the two phones on my account today too that were purchased from the Apple store, they did need the IMSI from the new phones but other than that no issues what so ever.

I did an att.com order for an iPhone 7 with next for 24 months and traded in an iPhone 6 at the corporate ATT store. I then proceeded to reserve an iPhone 7 Plus at the Apple Store also on ATT Next for 24 months. Went to another ATT corporate store and traded in an iPhone 6S Plus.

Both stores gave me a receipt with $0 dollar value and it stated September Trade In. Hope I get both credits or I'm out $1,300 over the next two years in credits!!! I think the key is a corporate ATT store. Both reps I worked with knew the program and had me out in less than 10 minutes.

I was told in a chat today that it ended 9/25 so this seems to confirm it!

I was in an Apple store today on the phone with ATT and she said I had to turn it in by the 25th. However, this paragraph below contradicts that. It's from that link the other person posted (thank you for that):

"Once you receive your new iPhone you'll have 30-days to get the promotional trade-in value for your eligible iPhone. The trade-in promotion code is required for online trade-in. The promotion code is valid for 30 days after receiving the new iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus, even if you receive the iPhone after September 25, 2016."

I'm not quite sure what the point is of having this end date of Sept 25 then? Unless it means that you had to have paid for (ordered and paid tax) your new iPhone 7 by the 25th.

I do all mine online. You just have to use the promotional code when you fill out the form. The links below are all you need. No need to deal with people who don't know what's going on.

I don't trust it through the mail, too much could go wrong...lost package...ATT employee claiming damage...etc. At least when your bring it into the store they inspect it right in front of you and you get a receipt for proof. Feels much safer.

Is anyone thinking to turn in their 6 as late as possible in case their 7 has the noise problem with video?

Something I don't understand is why anyone would choose the 30 month option over the 24 month option when choosing this program. Since AT&T is making the monthly payment, why not let them pay it off earlier?

My receipt at the store also said $0 value, but the code Fall2016 trade is on it. Wow, I thought I had until 9/30 to trade my 6 to get my mom her 7. Soooo glad we were able to find the black 7 she wanted in store and did it already. Less glad I get her 5C until my 7+ shows up in November.

Pretty sure as long as you order by the 25th you're good. then you have 30 days after receiving the phone to do the trade in

ATT spells it out here for those who will receive the Iphone order late:

https://www.att.com/esupport/article.html#!/wireless/KM1123971

Once you receive your new iPhone you'll have 30-days to get the promotional trade-in value for your eligible iPhone. The trade-in promotion code is required for online trade-in. The promotion code is valid for 30 days after receiving the new iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus, even if you receive the iPhone after September 25, 2016.
  • Note: Once your trade-in is received and verified, your bill credits will start within three bill cycles. You will need to pay your bill in full, remain active and in good-standing on your installment agreement to continue to receive your credits towards your installment payments. If you cancel service, your device balance (up to $970 based on which iPhone model you buy) will be due.

The 25th is the last day you can order and take advantage of the trade. Those that ordered by the 25th then have 30 days from the day they receive their new device to send the old one in.

if you bought at the apple store, how do they know you ordered it before the 25th? seems like i need to get my ass into an ATT store today and turn in the old 6.

unless the fact that an ip7 was activated on the account before the 25th counts as far as this is concerned (apple did have them in stock yesterday)

That would make it on record so should work. I want to keep my 6 a bit to make sure there are no sound problems with the new 7.

Because you're on Next payment plan and they can lookup when you signed the agreement.
