Just got done w/ a chat and the rep told me:

1) existing customers qualify
2) any Next plan qualifies
3) you can buy a more expensive phone and pay the difference

Basically I was told to upgrade to the model I wanted and when my phone arrives bring in my iPhone 6 to start the credits. Does this jibe with what others have been told?

Exactly what I was told. I did a live chat and took screenshots, so if they try to change this promo in any way I'll just call and raise hell :)

Thanks for posting info everyone! I just ordered my 7+ 128gb.

The older hardware must be owned outright.
I'm assuming they mean "can't be on Next plan that isn't paid off". Two of three phones I'm going to turn in will still be on Apple Upgrade Plans started last year. I'll continue to make the 12 remaining monthly payments on them. From AT&T's point-of-view, those phones should look paid off.

Same for me also. Also have screenshots.

I would try to return it in store after you receive your new phone because I heard that it takes a really long time for returns to get received and it could get lost, then ATT will bill you the entire cost of the phone and by that time, you won't be able to return the new phone if something goes wrong.

Okay, I'm having a hard time understanding the whole taxes on trades when it comes to cell phones. In most states, when you trade in a car (lets say worth $10,000) and buy a more expensive car (lets say worth $30,000), you would only pay taxes on the difference (works out to $20,000). Why is this not true with cell phones?

It's not about cars vs cellphones.

Sales tax is applied to whatever the price is for the goods at the point when you pay. You pay the car dealer $20,000, so you pay the tax on the $20,000.

For AT&T you are still paying $650 for the phone, so you still pay the tax on the $650. The reason why AT&T is calling it free is that you pay $650, but you immediately get a $650 credit on your bill (note the exact wording is "Free after $650 in monthly bill credits"). The state doesn't care that you got a $650 credit on your bill, they want their share of the initial transaction.

For another example, I got a generator for "free" but had to pay sales tax. It was $300 MSRP but had a 50% off sale (so $150 at the register) and a $150 manufacturer's mail in rebate. Because I paid $150 at the register, I had to pay sales tax on that amount even though later I got the mail in rebate which reduced the price to $0.

Anyone know if you can still trade in and get the bill credit if you bought the phone from Apple but still through AT&T Next?

Yes, that is what I was told also. I printed the chat conversation and the promo from the website for good measure. I talked with three different people via online chat and a voice call, 2 confirmed it, one had no idea what I was talking about, and couldn't even find the promotion on AT & T' webpage....fingers crossed the trade in goes as planned.

Does anyone know how the credits apply though? Cause i would want to pay off for the phone right away so i can unlock it

i'm confused. my iP6 will be off of the 2yr contract Monday (9/12). they'll give me up to $650 towards the iP7? it's going towards the bill but can it be used to pay the next plan on the device? my brain hurts and i think it's a little more simpler than this.

Didn't ask this when I was on Chat and looks like it's down now --

anyone know if you are on Next 24 annual upgrade and you upgrade next year if you still get the credits or they stop when the 2017 iPhone is activated? I assume they stop, but curious.

Are you saying they are giving you a $650 credit w/o a trade in?

It's 24 monthly credits payed towards the line on the new NEXT Installment plan with the trade in of your owned iPhone 6/6s/6s+

Hi, I have 3 lines on my att account and all three phones are fully paid off. Does anyone know if this is restricted to one phone only for trade in, or can I trade in all 3 to get $650 each bill credits?? Thanks in advance!

so when or if i want to upgrade to the 7s/8, my iP7 will be on the next plan and will need to be traded in or paid off by me, correct?

So if you own a 16GB iPhone 6 which is fully-functional but in bad cosmetic shape (low resell value), and only upgrade phones every two years, this deal benefits you the most.

I wonder if they will let you take this deal every two years, which technically allows you to have a free $650 phone every two years and at the same time hooking you up for two more years of service.

I think that's correct. Either way you will forfeit the remaining amount of credit.

You don't pay $650 out right, it's still a Next plan in your account. Just AT&T will credit you your Next monthly payment as long as you stay in their network.

Hmm so I already preordered the iPhone 7+ based on the screenshots with the rep that I posted earlier. However, now I'm wondering if they are going to screw us. The offer is good until the end of September but with shipping dates already slipped, I won't be getting mine until October and won't be trading in until after the promo date. Does this matter? (I.e. When I go to trade in my phone on October 10th, are they going to tell me I missed the promo period?)

I believe it is when you ordered the new phone, not when you receive it. You should call them back and ask this

that is exactly what I was told when I called and went to the store.
