Wait... so a company was paid because customers are getting lied to?

We do not know what the settlement was, but that seems likely. I better way to look at it is that Sprint was paid because its customers were responding to AT&T misrepresenting its own to AT&T customers and possibly hurtling Sprint. :)

I'm not siding with At&t on this but I can't believe Sprint of all companies had the AUDACITY to try and call someone out about being misleading, Sprint's coverage is less than garbage (if there's a word for that), they should be sued for lying about their coverage in the US.

Maybe Sprint should save its money for their wireless infrastructure instead of litigating with other companies over a stupid icon.

Yes, 5GE is annoying, but it’s not the first time they’ve done this and they weren’t the first before that (see T-mobile with HSPA+).

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Or Verizon with their non-standard 5G Home products, and now their not-wide-enough Ultrawideband...

If it were true, we wouldn’t call it marketing...

Whatever 5Ge is , it’s damn slow.

This changed on my phone recently from LTE to 5GE, and I certainly agree -- less bars + slower. At least from the past few weeks of usage.

Someone mentioned before why Apple allowed this "rebranding" -- perhaps it's more about when the phone connects to the network, and the network sends back the label, and Apple doesn't necessarily catch what the string is that's displayed on your phone?

AT&T should be sued by actual customers for the misleading labels. Apple should be sued as well for accommodating AT&T on this scam.

Apple should be sued for ATT's advertising? What?

Please, hire a lawyer. Spend a lot of money. You found the secret to untold riches.

WOW

Pretty sure ios 12.2 added it.

I use ATT, have for a great many years. No problem with the network or the service, but this particular ad campaign (and that's all it is, advertising) is stupid. Real stupid, but not actionable. Next your gonna sue because axe body spray doesn't get you laid? Ha. No one really falls for these advertising stunts. They didn't when Sprint tried it, they don't now that ATT does it.

Well, whatever they are doing with law suite, boy when I went into near Seattle, WA area which we rare go into, I noticed on my original iPhone X this 5GE and thought, what the hell is that? Is that like the faster speed than LTE? So I went to my speed test app and saw that it was INCREDIBLY FAST! I mean it was like 160Mbps down and like 30 to 40Mbps up. I'm like daaaaang!!!! Where in some areas, I only get like 15 to 40 Mbps and like 5Mbps up? Sheees, It's like dialup. Yes, I'm with AT&T. So, whatever the naming scheme maybe, it's fast this 5G of sorts.
You sound like a ridiculous corporate shill. “5Ge” is literally 4G LTE. No difference. AT&T has admitted as much.

You’re overestimating the technological intelligence of the average American. It’s honestly dumb that they can name it whatever they want and trick consumers into thinking it’s different.

Cut the kid a little slack... They think dialup was measured in Mbps. ;)

And they aren’t wrong— I see speeds 3 times faster when connected as 5Ge. 140Mbps down.

The simplest solution always seems like the most obvious. Just create a new badge for LTE-A (advanced) or LTE+ and keep the 5G label pure.

3G
4G (HSPA+)
LTE
LTE+
5G

Sprint lost tons with their faux-G (4G) branding back in the day so I can see their point in trying to spread the justice.

Except that 4G is actually supposed to be faster than LTE, and LTE was just stop gap. It’s actually called 4G-LTE and has the same meaning as 5Ge, which is to say that it’s not quite that generation but it’s evolving to it. So I agree with you that we should keep the 5G label pure, but your list’s order is slightly wrong.

Or just say what it is, LTE. Problem solved.

Sprint: You can't say it's 5G, that's misleading to consumers.
ATT: Here's $100.
Sprint: Ah, no problem then!

Given that it’s an unwinnable lawsuit $100 would be a huge win.

AT&T: You’re honor, we’d like to keep the 5Ge’s marketing campaign.

Sprint: Girl really? “5G’s please?” Good God Girl, Get a Grip.

This all comes across as desperate on Sprint’s part. They are teetering on the brink, praying their merger with T-Mobile goes through. Let AT&T’s customers decide for themselves if it’s a marketing gimmick or not. Why doesn’t Sprint just focus on not delivering a sucky network? This is the best use of their paltry resources??

I speed tested 5GE in DC, and got a whopping 4 Mbps. They should obviously fix the speeds of LTE first.
There are many factors involved with the actual speeds you get, with the big ones being congestion and signal strength. Unless you're right by the tower, and that tower isn't overloaded, you probably won't be able to get good speeds.

I’m all for whatever AT&T is doing/branding. These speeds are insane/way faster than anyone really needs on a phone... here’s what I’m getting with just “normal” LTE:

Whiny Sprint or not, this is still a major dick move from AT&T and their brazen defense of it makes me slightly nauseous. This is indefensible.
