Anything for a buck. Marketers are worse than lawyers, but no one ever makes bad jokes about them, oddly enough.

I’m all for whatever AT&T is doing/branding. These speeds are insane/way faster than anyone really needs on a phone... here’s what I’m getting with just “normal” LTE:

Dude. I wish I had 1/5 of that speed. I think it’s a crime my provider claims 4G, let alone LTE. Here’s what I get living in the same city as my provider’s headquarters.

I’m switching this weekend, even though they are doing everything in their power to stop it from happening.

AT&T has defended its 5GE branding by calling 5G Evolution "first step on the road to 5G" and by claiming that customers "love" the 5GE branding because they "want and deserve to know" when "better speeds" are available.

You’ve gotta be shittin’ me. Nobody loves this marketing crap.

They claim 4 - 20 mb/s speeds as 5G speeds, but it’s horribly false. Those speeds are actually 3G speeds. I live in The Netherlands and I get those speeds in very remote areas and they indeed call it 3G. In downtown areas I have 80 - 100 and that’s just 4G. Oh, and I probably pay a third of what you pay in the USA...

What 5G phone are you claiming to use that's not getting 5G speeds? Your story sounds made up.
My guess: Any 4G phone that displays the 5Ge indicator. Isn’t that the point of his ‘game’, claiming to be tricked into thinking he owns a 5G phone and than complaining that it doesn’t reach full 5G speeds?

Why do americans have to be difficult? Just call it 4G like everyone else - and leave 5G for when 5G is available.

The problem is no US carrier supports 4G yet. LTE is a promise to support 4G in the future. We’d all be super happy to have 4G today. Forget about these 5G games. Let’s get 4G! ATT is using shell game with a promise to deliver 5G service by substituting a promise to deliver 4G service. That’s just crazy!

I use ATT, have for a great many years. No problem with the network or the service, but this particular ad campaign (and that's all it is, advertising) is stupid. Real stupid, but not actionable. Next your gonna sue because axe body spray doesn't get you laid? Ha. No one really falls for these advertising stunts. They didn't when Sprint tried it, they don't now that ATT does it.

But Sprint really did offer 4G since 2008, and was the first one out of the four major networks, but instead of the LTE standard, they developed WiMAX. They didn't lie.

While I definitely do not support the ridiculous number of Lawsuits, many completely frivolous, that people & Companies in the US bring to court, I think it is right that in this case AT&T are brought to task.
5G is an accepted protocol. Regardless of the speeds this 5GE gives, if a Carrier offers "5G" and doesn't even have a 5G network, they are obviously trying to deceive people. Further, "Enhanced" sounds like it is somehow 5G+. I would have that that at least the FTC would have something to say about this ; if someone sold a TV set advertised as "4K" and it was only 1080, I would imagine they would be prosecuted.
But Sprint also showed their supposed act of looking after the consumer as cynical to say the least; they settled, but in the Settlement AT&T will continue to be able to advertise this as 5GE. So it was indeed just a money grab.

AT&T should be sued by actual customers for the misleading labels. Apple should be sued as well for accommodating AT&T on this scam.
Before you even get that far, I'm stunned that there isn't some national body that would deal with advertising standards and deal with this.
American commerce is broken.

"amicably settled."

Whatever that means.. Either you settle, or you don't. I can't believe AT&T politely offered their views

No company ever does anything politely... if you say something is fake.

Why should anyone mind about slightly misleading labels? Let’s just have nice marketing based names that sound better.

5Gf
Because it’s on the road to 5G which will be fast.

6GG - 4G but reflecting that the speed is like having six horses (geegees).

16G - it’s 4G squared, because everyone is expected to use the connection at least 4 times a day. It’s quite conservative really because most people will use the connection many more times than 4, but they don’t want to be misleading...!

InfinityG - because numbers are confusing. If we can have ‘unlimited’ data why not infinite speed?

InfinityPlusGeExtraPremium - whatever the carrier who doesn’t use ‘InfinityG’ first can use in response.

Why do americans have to be difficult? Just call it 4G like everyone else - and leave 5G for when 5G is available.

Because there is less government oversight.

European consumer protection laws would stop this pretty quick, most countries have some sort of federal and/or state bureaus that can sue and/or hand out smaller fines directly.

"AT&T has defended its 5GE branding by calling 5G Evolution "first step on the road to 5G" and by claiming that customers "love" the 5GE branding because they "want and deserve to know" when "better speeds" are available."

...y'all never asked me AT&T*. Stop lying**

I don't love a brand, I love better speed and connectivity..

*Yeah I feel triggered because they said 'customers', which I read as all customers.
If not, they should've been specific...of wait they've already shown they can't be specific by calling something 5G which it is not?

**Ok I'm lying as well, I don't even live in the US and am no customer...but what they can do I can too.

What 5G phone are you claiming to use that's not getting 5G speeds? Your story sounds made up.
What are 5G speeds?
Theoretically, 5G speed should be 10x 4G speed, but actual testing in Chicago showed it at best 4x speed, by the antenna and the only phone connected!
So, if you can see the antenna from your location and it's not raining, you can expect about 2x speed over 4G! So, what is all this fuss about? Do, users here think 5G will be live changing?

I wish iOS had a switch where you could refuse certain cellular network speeds.
Whenever it drops LTE and says 1X or 3G it means no data and is completely useless. Instead of a cellular switch in settings for enable/disable LTE there needs to be the same switch for 1X and 3G to complete disable them.
So in this case only allow 5GE and LTE.

"We understand why our competitors don't like what we are doing, but our customers love it."

No, no we don't, hence why I'm switching to Verizon once my contract is up.

Whatever 5Ge is , it’s damn slow.

Agreed. My work phone (Verizon) is far faster on 4G vs "5Ge" on my personal phone (which isn't 5G at all).

There are many factors involved with the actual speeds you get, with the big ones being congestion and signal strength. Unless you're right by the tower, and that tower isn't overloaded, you probably won't be able to get good speeds.
I was right by the tower, but my point stands. 5GE is supposed to represent the fact that 5G speeds there yet the tower can’t even accommodate those speeds. In other words, if the tower is congested, maybe they should add more lines to increase its bandwidth. It’s like a sewer line that’s too small to handle all the drainage and floods frequently and the builders going “good news!! We upgraded the sewer. It now has all these fancy sensors now, but the diameter is still the same.”

4G i Sweden (iphone x)... Should perhaps be called 7G in AT&T terms?

My feelings on it are mixed.

I like having a new indicator. It does show 5GE in only certain areas (it's nothing like how AT&T replaced the regular 3G indicator with "4G").

But... I've learned that it absolutely has no impact on my speed.

At work, with 5GE, I get just ~20 Mbps.

At home, with regular LTE, I get ~200 Mbps.
