If that's true (not doubting you, doubting AT&T) that would be a significant difference.
right, which is why i asked for her to note this on my account and repeate it ten times back to me. at first, we thought it was my discount brining me under 99 bucks, but then after she put me on hold, she came back with this new news

AT&T does not treat all customers equally.
Eligibility is based on many factors.

How many lines you have, service levels, FAN accounts, how long you've been a customer, payment history, the list goes on.
So trying to compare one person's eligibility to another is pointless.

I've been an AT&T/Cingular/AT&T customer for many years. I have a FAN account and am on a family plan with bundled services.
I have been eligible to upgrade after 12 months, regardless of the phone I pick, for several years now.

Not bragging, just putting it out there as yet another example of how AT&T decides your upgrade status.
Loyalty holds a lot of weight in AT&T's eyes. Occasionally they need to be reminded of that fact, but overall my experience with them has been very good.

Getting all indignant about not being treated equally is pointless.

thanks for telling me haw att works seeing as how I work there

Just because you work there doesn't mean you know what's going on. Trust me. I don't work at AT&T but I know more about it than the people who work there.

I don't see how locking people into a new multi-thousand dollar 2 yr agreement a couple months early is doing right by anybody.

I have every right to complain, and I will :)

No one is forcing you to read or respond to it, and I'm not being disruptive, just stating my opinion.

Of course it's probably very convenient for them to make more money now than before, but why complain again and again? They went out of their way to break their ToS.

People are never satisfied.

Yeah. Been a customer since the Pacific Bell days, and it seems to me that the iPhone is the only phone they make special deals for. Rightfully so, it's their biggest money maker right now.

I am calling ATT back to confirm this with them, haha, let's see what a second person says, this is to good to be true

It also depends on how much you pay a month. I bought my 3G last year in late July and my monthly bill is at least $150 a month (unlimited voice/data) and i've paid all the bills on time so it said I was eligible on July 30th because of that. I think of you pay the bare minimum on your monthly service it affects the upgrade date.

That makes sense, my bill is $89 and purchased in July as well.... It says I'm eligible in December.

So basically their saying, the more money we jack from you, the sooner your allowed to upgrade and all you other ******s who pay the minimum.... f-off!

Basically.... The more $$$ you give'em, the sooner you can upgrade.

Well if you worked there you would know that upgrade eligible people in July / August / September will receive the full $199 / $299 upgrade prices on June 19th... maybe you should get your facts straight before you start confusing everyone.

Straight from the Gizmodo iPhone 3GS review:

If you're eligible to upgrade in July, August or September, AT&T's letting you do so at the full subsidized $199/$299 price. If not, you'll have to wait until your 18 months are up.

Do you realize that these people have jobs and might not read rss feeds while concurrently working, and realize this press release was just issued?

I've seen numerous people say they've called and the rep has no clue what they're talking about, and then referring to them as idiots. Why not let the memo propagate through the system before bombarding some poor rep who's just trying to do their job.

Yeah. Like a hooker :p

Nah, what do you want them to do. Obviously the guy who pays 4,000 a month is more important to them than the guy who pays 40 a month. Even if they say thats not true. I am on a business account and we pay a few hundred a month. We're eligible I believe. Even though my rep said to me and I quote, "The guy who spends 400 bucks is just as equal to us as the guy who spends 4,000 or 40."

OK, the second cust service rep just confirmed this info....purchased july, aug, september

Wait wait wait... let me get this straight.

I got an iPhone 3G on 8/30/08.

So you're telling me that I can buy a 32GB on Friday for $300?

WOW. This is the first good thing AT&T has done in a long ass time.

Can someone clarify that there IS NO UPGRADE FEE?!?!?
Basically it is $199/$299 for EVERYONE regardless of contract status? Where is that press release? Because the one out does not state that!!!

Ok, this may be a dumb question but I am now going to sell my 3g iphone and was curious when I sell it and delete ALL DATA on it, do i leave the sim card in (im AT&T) or transfer that sim card to my new 3gs phone?

Basically.... The more $$$ you give'em, the sooner you can upgrade.

Honestly, this is genius idea they should install permanently. If you spend $100/mo instead of $70, that's $360 a year more they'll get out of customers. Let them be eligible for a new iPhone every year.

i just sold my iphone 3g (yesterday) and am using my old blackjack - when i go to att sight they say i'm not elibible for an iphone upgrade because i have the blackjack - they need to get this fixed or their gonna have a bunch of angry people on their hands.

Wrong. If your contract eligibility date is June-September, you are able to get the $199/299 3GS this Friday. This has nothing to do with the upgrade fees or any other fees, only the cost of the phone.

I agree, think about it folks, it makes sense from a business perspective. You are going to reward those who spend more with certain perks and benefits, one of which is being able to do this upgrade at a lower cost. No different than Sprint having premier launch parties for the Pres for their “valued clients.”

if i got the original iphone on launch day then upgraded to 3g on launch day, do i qualify for this price? it says im not eligable until 12/12/09

This is not true. The Press Release was very clear. If you are not one of their customers that spend > $99 per month per line and would have qualified for at 12 month Upgrade Eligible price in July / Aug / Sept. you still don't qualify.

For example, iPhone customers who spend more than $99 a month per line with us generally are eligible for an upgrade between 12 and 18 months into their contract.

We also currently offer early upgrade pricing only for iPhone 3G S and iPhone 3G.

All of that said, we’ve been listening to our customers. And since many of our iPhone 3G customers are early adopters and literally weeks shy of being upgrade eligible due to iPhone 3G S launching 11 months after iPhone 3G, we’re extending the window of upgrade eligibility for a limited time.

We’re now pleased to offer our iPhone 3G customers who are upgrade eligible in July, August or September 2009 our best upgrade pricing, beginning Thursday, June 18.
