That's just wonderful! Out of three tests in Monterey, CA I can't even get into the Mbps...

Yeah, I did a free test on ATT back in '08 when I was living in Monterey. Same deal, they claimed GPRS was fast and acceptable to watch streaming video. I had ATT for 8 hours and sent the SIM card back. Nice to see nothing has changed! At least their Apple Store opened that summer.

yep new york most be really slow

Least you can use a fat girl if desperate. Try using AT&T during desperate times (natural disasters)... can't get ANYTHING... gagg, did I really type that?

Strange about the better speed tests people are posting, btw... upload speeds still seem to be less than 10% of download speed. That can limit TCP/IP downloads due to ACK congestion. Thought AT&T was also deploying HSUPA ?

The iPhone does not support HSUPA. My averange upload speed is 140-280 Kbit/s

AT&T is a government contractor at heart. It does things slowly and bureaucratically. You're going to love them sweet when the nukes hit. This whole "consumer thing" is new to them. To me the biggest positive of AT&T having an exclusive with Apple for a few years here is the rubbing off of the Apple ethic onto the wireless division managers. It has got to be hard to adjust for those stodgy AT&T folks.

Well, not really.

ATT for wireless isn't the ATT of old with LD lines and bell labs and all that, it's Cingular... with SBC oversight. Not a good combo.

The ATT that you're remembering is well and truly gone now.

I think SBC just didn't want to spend at the rate they needed to to keep up.

Is Verizon 3G going to collapse in June? Thinking of returning one of my Family Plan 3GS's.

Wow, does AT&T not get it? They need to improve their speed and system fast. Other companies are just waiting to have a better and faster system.

Up until a week ago, I did not realize how poor AT&T's service was in some areas of the country. Where I am at AT&T is better than Verizon, but not by much. I've travelled all over the country and had some spoty coverage, certainly a lot of 3G holes, in New York and some other large cities but had really good coverage in ones like Dallas. Generally speaking, my phone and texting coverage was just fine only hurt with Edge vs 3G.

Last week I visited Phoenix, AZ. The service for AT&T was so poor I wanted to go and get a Verizon phone right away. Not only did I have poor 3G coverage, I had very poor talk and text coverage! I could literally be OUTSIDE in an open area have decent if not really good bars, walk 2 feet away and totally drop the call then have no bars.

It was so frustrating, I thought perhaps my phone was going bad. I asked everyone I could who had a cell - who are you with and does AT&T coverage suck here in Phoenix? The resounding answer was Verizon and YES!

I can now totally understand if this coverage exists in such a large city like the greater Phoenix, AZ area how bad it must be in others. I am thankful to be back in a place where at least my cell phone works but AT&T - the map issue is BIG. You can't wait two years to upgrade speed OR your coverage!

Areas in Phoenix where I tried my phone: across the street from a relatively new Apple store in Scottsdale, in the Mill District, in the ASU campus, Glendale,at the University of Phoenix stadium (wow talk about bad here), Happy Valley, Tempe and Mesa.

I'll give you central Scottsdale... AT&T coverage sucks there, but you can blame that on the Scottsdale city council.
They are very slow and even sometimes flat out refuse to issue new tower permits.

As for ASU and UoP stadium, I have no issue with voice or data everytime I go to either area. I suggest you get your phone checked out.

I live in NE. Phx. and work in NW. Phx. and AT&T's coverage hear blows Verizon's out of the water.

I switched to (Cingular)AT&T because I literally had to go outside to make or receive any calls when I was with Verizon.

Good Grief !!!!

Attention Apple:

If the Tablet requires a 3G contract, I will definitely NOT be buying a Tablet.

However, if I will be able to buy a Tablet with WiFi only and no 3G, then I will definitely be buying a Tablet.

I'm just one person, but I'm sure there are millions of iPhone owners out there that already complain about their AT&T contract that would NOT want a SECOND contract!

:apple:

Your complaint is about the contract, not whether or not the tablet has a 3G radio, right?

It shouldn't matter whether the tablet has a 3G radio or not, as long as you're not required to activate it.
