No you both pay the EXACT SAME 30 a month for data. DUH.

Also WTF is MRC? and what's it got to do with how much your paying for data with your iphone and how much your using.?

No, he's assuming his total monthly bill is higher than mine, which may or may not be the case. But he can act like it is to make him feel special.

Paying for tethering is the stupidest thing I've ever heard especially when you're going to be capped on the data you can use. we're already paying for the bandwidth...why double-charge us? It's like buying an MP3 on your iPhone and then being charged again if you want to listen to it on your computer. AT&T sucks.

Exactly.. $20 charge for the "privilege" to tether with a capped plan is rediculous.

You are paying for a 2GB bucket of data that can be consumed by your mobile device on a monthly basis.

It should not matter where the initial request of that data came from, whether it be your phone, your friends iPod or your PC. Who cares..all data is flowing through the mobile device and going against your cap.

Data is data..

I could care less about the tethering and for those of you who use it I feel for you. It's crap.

What gets me is the $15 a month for only 200mb.... or $25 a month for 2g's... Seems to me there's a big gap there. I should be paying 1/10th the price of 2g's for 1/10th the amount of data supplied.

I checked my usage and I'm averaging around 300 mb a month. Now I save a whopping $5 a month for 2g's. The hell with that. I'd rather pay the extra $5 for that fluke month where I go crazy with data usage.

I don't use a nav app all that much but what about those who do. Say you're going on a long trip. How much data will that use?

My highest usage in the past 6 months as been around 500mb, so obviously that would be the best choice, but my plan is so convoluted and woven through previous plans I don't know what switching would do.

I have 1100 minutes (more than enough since most people I know are with AT&T, but when I was re-signing my contract keeping it was the best deal), 200 texts and unlimited data on 2 iPhones and I pay $141/month.
Is this similar to what others are paying?

This is insane. So I can sign up for tethering, but I am capped at 2GB?! I use as much as 1GB a month just on my iPhone. If I tethered to my laptop, I would expect to burn through 2GB of data. AT&T Fail IMHO

Yeah, the tethering announcement is a double edged sword for some. Great we finally have tethering! Damn, they lowered the data cap from 5gb to 2gb.

I can understand implementing a sharing of the data between the iPhone and the device being tethered to, but if you're going to do that, at least leave the data cap at 5gb..

Knocking it down to 2gb = loss...

I'm talking about the overall amount of money that's paid to AT&T monthly. Hence MRC - Monthly Recurring Charge. Look it up. Anyways  I've got an unlimited plan with 5 lines. I pay a couple of hundred dollars a month. So while we pay the same for Data. I doubt your total bill is more than mine.

Well I tried that but when I google high MRC the top ten hits have nothing to do with phones.. infact the first one is about model trains. so who's the smart guy now ? ;) Using acronyms is not the best way to get your point across.

Trust me I could have an entire conversation with 90% of the "words" being acronyms with other people in my industry and you'd have no clue what we just talked about.

yeah sure your ONE COMBINED BILL FOR 5 PHONES add's up to more then 1 guy's bill with one phone. HOWEVER........ your still paying the same amount PER PHONE!!!!!!!!!

My MRC is more than your's, which doesn't mean a thing. I usually use about 500 mb a month. The time is coming when AT&T will start charging for data use above a set limit. Don't cry when it happens.

wow, was just about to flip over this until i checked my usage. my phone reads 1.8GB. BUT, it's never been reset! that's the amount i've used in 2 years!!!! my usage is under 200mb a month. i'm shocked. i'm always playing with the phone.... i guess since i have access to wi-fi often, i don't use the data much. i'm torn though about if i should really take the 200mb plan. i'd all of a sudden feel like i have to be careful. hmmmmm... will look closer at my bill history to make a decision.

Step 1: Jailbreak your iPhone (Cost $0)
Step 2: MyWi (Cost $10)
Step 3: Save $240 per year on the 'privilege' of tethering, same 2GB of data either way...

Breakdown:
Tethering through AT&T (2GB of data between iPhone and tethered device)
Total cost: $540 per year
Tethering through MyWi (2GB of data between iPhone and tethered device)
Total cost: $250 per year

Difference: $290

You do the math...rather I did it for you ;)

That's fine and when they do start charging i will either pay it or i will go to another provider. But i'm not going to sit around and whine and cry about it. There are plenty of people doing a fine job of crying to the point where it should be raining outside

Also if they did start charging that would allow me to leave with no ETF and eventually all providers will probarly get rid of unlimited plans. So ill deal seems to me you can't deal with it eh? :p

2GB is 2GB no matter how its used. If tethering was free I doubt 'everyone' will be using tethering.

So you don't mind $20 for tethering? If so, with customers like you, no wonder AT&T is laughing all the way to the bank.

No one wants to pay more. But you can't argue that a person who uses iPhone + tethering isn't going to average more data usage than someone who uses an iPhone alone. The counter argument is that this effect is already factored in the price.

It seems like you would you prefer if it was $25 for 1GB/mo and $25 + $20 for 2GB/mo + tethering just so it would be more consistent.

And your attempting to make me look stupid by trying to pull my post apart to mask the fact that your pissed at AT&T? No one cares man. You need to get it worked out.

The tethering charge is BS!!!! If there are caps on the data plans, then tethering should be free! I don't mind the new data plans, but to be charged $20 just for the privilege of sharing my iphone data (which I'm being charged by usage now) with another device is completely unacceptable. I'll be jailbreaking thank you very much AT&T.

Agreed. Not allowing tethering may have been annoying, but from a business/bandwidth stance it made good sense with the unlimited plan. This does not make sense.

I deal with it just fine, just pointing out the MRC doesn't mean a thing. I am keeping unlimited for me and my kids, to insure there is no pain at the end of the billing cycle.

who the hell ever said I was "pissed" at AT&T ?

I think the 20 bucks for tethering is bovine manure, but pissed?

no I simply wont use tethering. Just like I have not been using it for almost 3 years now.

You assume too much man.

None. The nav apps store the maps on the phone and don't require a data connection.

oh. I knew the maps were stored on the phone, I just wasn't sure if they needed to send data for location purposes. I guess that is all done through gps and doesn't need data.

With these new plans, are you still required to have a data plan with an iphone? I'd rather just limit my data usage to wifi only if I've got to pay $15 a month for 200mb. I could deal with $15 a month for 500mb or 750mb but not for 200.

Well HOPEFULLY it will work like the iPad works now and warn you when you reach the 200MB limit and ask you what you want to do. Hopefully.

But ya I would think the 200MB would be enough for most people unless you stream video a lot. I use slingplayer and youtube a few times a month and I only use about 500MB/month.

True, but isn't that why you buy the bigger data plan? Like buying a car but having to pay extra to carry passengers.

The tethering does stink though. I agree if they are capping the data, why charge more for tethering? Doesn't make sense to me. Have the option to tether it for free under the capped data or have an option to pay for more data. I'd love to be able to tether once in a while. My grandmother doesn't have a computer or wi-fi around and would love to tether my phone to my laptop so she could see the internet.

seems in the last 10 month i only once exceeded the 200MB. so i think I will go to the $15/200MB plan. I'm a bit pissed that they lowered it to 200MB from the 250MB that we had before. Given the shoddy service of ATT i will also reduce to a plan with less minutes. Of course I will lose all rollover minutes. Thank you ATT.

I'm not too worked up about the new data plans because I think there should be a data cap. There are too many people out there who think the can use as much data as they want and hog the entire bandwith. However ATT's coverage is so shoddy that the only way to respond to this to reduce the money I spend on ATT to an absolute minimum.

Really kills any hope of video chat over 3g with that fancy new front facing camera

yeh, that's something to think about. new features of the new phone make me wonder if i'll use more data. like Pandora. if that can run in the background now...i'm afraid i'll use it more and run up the data. or run up the data loading better pics and hd video.
