Enough with the "Verizon-can't-do-voice-and-data-simultaneously" bit. WE GET IT! I've been with VZW since 2000, and I've never once had a situation where I've ever had the need to do both at once.

What about all those folks that have no native 3G coverage for AT&T, that only get EDGE? Hhmm? That's right, they can't do voice and data together either. I don't hear them complaining too loudly.

AT&T fanboys (if you wanna be called that), get over yourselves. Apple is a business, they will make phones for other non-GSM carriers, end of story. I'll be laughing while I keep my calls connected on an iPhone, and you are dropping them.

Better network > "voice and data together" any day of the week.

You mean you've never needed to... *gasp* multi-task?

Because apparently everyone says this is a big seller for them.

Never once? maybe b/c you CAN"T?!?!

a friend may call me, wonder how to get to a certain location.
I pop up google map.. direct them to location

or.. someone wants to know cost of something.
pop open safari, check prices, etc

Not to mention fwd'ing emails and pictures while you're talking to someone!!!

Not to be a stick in the mud or anything, but just for a point of clarification/accuracy. AT&T has almost 200k employees most of whom have nothing to do with this and would not be effected by it.

I realize that the AT&T wireless business is impacted by it, but this does not impact all AT&T employees.

I can't wait to upgrade my 3G. It is on its last leg (well not really). Vibrate button malfunctions, pretty much unusable, and it is close to being completely out of space. Give me 64GB! :D

My 3G is still just fine, but I would certainly appreciate a bit more memory (I have 16GB) and some more speed. Looking forward to what the new iPhone is going to bring.

Most likely the June vacation moratorium has been imposed on AT&T retail employees plus certain customer support and operations groups.

AT&T must be pushing for this to come out earlier than July, if they're smart.

I'd say the iPhone really took off with the 3G, with the lower contract subsidized pricing and all. So, most buyers are still on that two year contract that expires mid-Julyish. They must surely want to hook them on another 2 year contract, using the newest iphone as the bait, and effectively cutting them off from going to another carrier/phone.

If they wait until after those contracts expire, the hordes of cell phone free agents will start to consider Android and the like more seriously, without an ETF hovering over their heads.

My bosses need to do that all the time. Like most computing devices it varies depending on your needs.

From the article: "Apple has typically launched its new iPhone models in June of each year, although the iPhone 3G did not launch until July 11th, 2008, just inside the window predicted by AT&T's vacation block that year."

How can you say they "typically" do something when you only have three data points and one of them doesn't fit your model?

Love it!!!

iPhone 3G starting to show it's age. Can't wait for the new hardware to come out. The 4.0 software looks awesome, and not being able to use it fully on my 3G sucks, but I'm ready for a new one anyways.

A large company of consultants I use just switched all their employees over to AT&T because they need to be able to do this. Of course, the reason they need it is because they tether their laptops to share data while on conference calls, so that means the iPhone is out. But the point is that just because you don't use it doesn't mean there's not a need for it.

Any Verizon employee's being told they can't take June off? May hint to something. ;)

Verizon employees are probably being encouraged to take time off in June, because business is going to be pretty slow as people line up outside AT&T stores.

It's just one of those things that you dont know how wonderful it is until you have it :D

What about Apple employees? Surely there are Apple retail folks on this board. Any heartburn over taking vacations in June?

I'm still with the original iPhone and I am very much ready to part with some dollars for the new hardware. Very excited. But the iPad is at least keeping me busy in the meantime.

My wife and I play iPhone hand-me-down every year. Of course I get the newest model and she gets the previous year's. BUT...(wink-;)-hint) I do one thing. As my iPhone is at the end of it's 10th month, I go to the "genius" bar complaining that the screen locks up. They open a case number and tell me to go home and do a clean restore.

4 weeks later I go back and say "It still locks up sometimes. Usually while web surfing but sometime while sending texts. Just a couple of times a week". They whip out a replacement iPhone but I object. "I don't want a refurbished phone that was someone else's problem." Apple say's "We don't put our refurbished iPhones as warranty replacements. This one is new and unused but without the nice box and accessories."

I go home with a new iPhone with a fresh battery and no scratches. A month later when the new model arrives, I get it and hand down my "used" phone to my wife.

Congrats, you're commiting fraud.

That sounds about right! :D

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm sure Apple will make a GSM phone if they think there's money in it, and I also didn't say that EVERYONE needs the voice+data at the same time on GSM.

All I said was that I won't be switching to Verizon this summer because I DO use voice and data at the same time. I'm sure there are people who don't have AT&T 3G coverage who want to use data and voice at the same time, and I'm sure there are ones who don't. When AT&T and Verizon both have widespread LTE, then I'll think about it, based mostly on prices at that point. As of now, my 3G coverage with AT&T is just fine where I travel, I don't have dropped calls, and I enjoy being able to use voice+data simultaneously. For my needs and location, AT&T is the better choice than Verizon. Everyone knows that with any cell carrier, your mileage and experience varies from location to location.

Personally, I don't care who does and doesn't have 3G, edge, GSM, EVDO or whatever you want to complain about, I just stated a personal preference.

Also, I hope you enjoy your as of now non-existant phone on a network we don't know for sure it will support. I'm already enjoying my iPhone on a network that works perfectly fine for me.

You've never had a situation because your network doesn't allow you to do it. Weak argument. I use voice + data on a daily basis. I talk while sending email, talk while looking at maps, talk while surfing and finding a phone number for my wife...the list goes on and on.

By the way, do you like your calls going to voicemail while you surf the web, 'cause that's what the Verizon network supports. Think about how archaic that one is. I'm waiting for an important call but don't dare check email, check weather, etc. because I might miss it. Do you get that?

Better network > "voice and data together" any day of the week.

I've had my iPhone in Long Island, NY and Phoenix, AZ and never had a problem with the network. 4-5 bars everywhere I go and rarely a dropped call. Sure, my evidence is ancedotal, but it's no different than the evidence your argument is based on.

If I worked for AT&T and needed time off during June, I'd contact the EEOC if they denied me.

And what, complain that you are a member of that well-known protected classification, "persons who require a vacation in June?" I guess that's right up there with race, color, religion, and national origin, huh?

Back to the topic: new iPhone in June. Yay! My current iPhone 3G contract is ending soon, so the timing is perfect. This is probably true of a lot of us who bought the 3G the day of its release in the U.S. or soon thereafter.

Does anybody know the gap between the previous iphone launch dates in the US and the UK/European launch dates? Or have they been simultaneous? (this I doubt...)
