What kind of phones do your parents use now? Do they text with you?

They both use Samsung SGH-A767 phones, which I admit are pieces of crap themselves, but they were both coming from motorola razr's last July (when I got the 3Gs), so I thought the phones were good enough to get them more acclimated to texting. Though e-mail is an interesting idea, they're just recently learning how to send pictures to our iMac through bluetooth and getting used to the iMac itself (lol). Plus, texting me is a great way to contact me while I'm in a class or at work, so I can respond to them without anyone catching me breaking the whole "no phones" rule every place tries to implement.

Also, every one of my friends text so much that I think we rarely call each other these days. So the messaging plan in my case is still a necessity, where as though they might end up liking Internet usage - especially if I got them iPhones as well - they don't see the need or even have a "want" for it.

Guess I wont be waiting outside for this one, I cant buy it until July 14th. :(

*snip*
I go home with a new iPhone with a fresh battery and no scratches. A month later when the new model arrives, I get it and hand down my "used" phone to my wife.

When I had my iPhone replaced and same with my sister, the serial numbers all start with 5K over the original of 8***etc. I'm guessing that 5K's are service part iPhones and not new ones as you state. Also, I've seen a sticker on boxes that say, 'this device may contain recycled parts' or something along these lines.

Food for thought I guess

It seems someone has never used an iPhone in its entirety. Multiple times daily, I use data while receiving calls. Text during a call, push notifications.....not being able to do this would simply defeat the purpose of an iPhone. IMO. AT&T has been wonderful in Louisville. I only drop my calls in the garage under the 30 story building I work in.

AT&T is an evil company that needs to die.

That is a bit ridiculous. AT&T has plenty of non-iPhone customers. You go ahead and enjoy being in the middle of an MMS, then the data transfer has to stop because you get a call... that is if you get the call... because I have seen EV-DO phones choose data over voice at times... so then, when your iPhone is polling the server for e-mail, your calls could go straight to voicemail instead. Push notifications are data too. Enjoy missing that outbid notice from the Ebay app because grandma decided to call you at that moment.

If verizon had the iPhone you wouldn't have to buy it with them anyways... I however would like to be able to make calls with my iPhone when traveling in rural areas, and thats something I can't do half the time now.

Enough with the "Verizon-can't-do-voice-and-data-simultaneously" bit. WE GET IT! I've been with VZW since 2000, and I've never once had a situation where I've ever had the need to do both at once.

What about all those folks that have no native 3G coverage for AT&T, that only get EDGE? Hhmm? That's right, they can't do voice and data together either. I don't hear them complaining too loudly.

AT&T fanboys (if you wanna be called that), get over yourselves. Apple is a business, they will make phones for other non-GSM carriers, end of story. I'll be laughing while I keep my calls connected on an iPhone, and you are dropping them.

Better network > "voice and data together" any day of the week.
is that why where i live i get 5 bars when Vzw gets 0?

It would be nice if the iPhone was available on all of the major carriers in the US, however I don't think that will happen anytime soon. I think Apple is committed to AT&T only in the US at least until Android starts to steal major market share.

There are many people like myself where AT&T only is not an option. The only option I have is to use another platform. That said I am happy with my Android phone. I always wanted an iPhone, but now even if it becomes available on Verizon I might stay with Android depending on who is offering the best handsets. Since my Droid has been updated to 2.1 it is starting to feel pretty polished. The Android Market continues to grow at a rapid pace and I am able to find about any application I want.

I really like my iPad and am interested in seeing what the new iPhone will offer, but after owning my Droid for 5 months I am very comfortable with Android as well.

I am curious why so many are upset with the idea that Apple might push the iPhone to other carriers? Can anyone explain how a one carrier strategy is better for gaining market share over a multi-carrier strategy? How does the customer benefit with the iPhone being only on AT&T compared to the iPhone being available on different networks?

Yes, imagine. It's mind boggling to me (a Verizon customer).

Why would anyone want a phone that's not a very good phone?

True, why would anyone want a phone which relies on an archaic OS such as WinMo? ;)

The iPhone happens to be an excellent phone - sends, receives, multi-tasks calls extremely well, conference calls are seamless, visual voicemail is remarkable.

FYI, the iPhone carrier's coverage has improved dramatically, since you've lambasted them last.

What remains mind boggling, is the inability to access information, servers, browse the web, take notes, map locations, read/send email, texts, etc,, all while on a call.

Mind boggling, indeed. :)

The new iPhone is going to be named the "iPhone iiii" and if you are a Verizon customer, "uuuu" will not be getting one.

Mind boggling, indeed. :)

What is also mind boggling is the fact that a corporation as large as AT&T has such limited resources they can only provide 3G service to selected top markets in the United States. Verizon provides the same level of service in the small rural markets as they do in the largest markets. It just boggles my mind that one can do it and the other can't. AT&T might have faster 3G in certain places, but Verizon covers most of the country with a very acceptable 3G service.

In the end it comes down to this... You have to use what works where you live.

Much agreed, however, AT&T's 3G coverage has been dramatically improving, overall.

Also noteworthy, the speed of AT&T's Edge seems to be on par with that of Verizon's 3(2.5)G - I've compared web access speeds with friends who are on Verizon, while on Edge, in sparsely populated areas in PA, and New York State.

The Edge network, for the most part, kept up with Verizon's.

Nevertheless, I'm very much looking forward to 4G, LTE. :)

OFF Topic, but . . .

I am in need of a new Mac Book Pro in addition to a new iPhone. I was going to wait until the educational discounts which begin in June and the new iPhone comes out.

I live in the over-taxed California. I have a free ticket to fly to Portland, OR where there is no sales tax. I plan on buying the three items (iPhone + MBP + Edu Bonus) spending over $3,000.

My question is "Will the iPhone be taxed on where it was purchased or where the service is located?"

Who cares about all the other stuff?

All these human beings can't take vacations in June. Might not seem drastic to some but sounds like communism to me.

Good question.

No, if you were to purchase the items in Portland, you would not be charged sales tax.

I too live in Louisville and get excellent service from AT&T. I always laugh when I hear about them having ****** service, cause I have no idea what they're talking about.

There are given places that I will lose service but that's a given and about it.

Verizon or AT&T ?

Not stealing the thread but, I've waited this long to get a new iPhone, I'll wait and see what happens with Apple + VZW.................

Either way, I'll also pay the full price so I dont get stuck with a 2 year BS contract and poor service.

It'll be interesting to see what happens between the

NEW OS 4.0

and

NEW iPhone + Features

AT&T + VZW should match Sprints plan on cost for service, although I think that if the iPhone comes to VZW, that AT&T is going to loose a good amount of customer base.

Are we all expecting the new iPhone to be "Right up there" with the best of what's currently out there hardware wise?

Something like this "kick ass" product from Samsung. The "Galaxy S"
