They are probably working on their towers and it will not be a permanent issue.

Just tested in PR and I am 1.6 down 1.2 up

All good in Louisiana:

Seems like we might just be overreacting to an outage...

Overreacting, maybe, but if they can send us all sorts of 'system' txt messages
for past due bills and new customer information, they should also be able to send a "network outage" txt instead of us finding out on our own.

I'm certain ATT wouldn't like us to "throttle" our payment to them to say, 1/10th of the bill and then be told "we're working on it". :D

How can it be an issue with towers if it's happening in many different geographical regions and all at the same exact capped speed? It seems like they are either rolling out this cap incrementally to other markets, or perhaps they have just targeted certain markets? It's still strange that they would do this in some places but not others.

NOTE: It also seems like more than a coincidence that they decide to do this right before/during the 4th of July weekend when all of the news sites and blogs are off... as if they were trying to avoid publicity about it. As if no one would notice.... maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I'm usually right about these things. lol

I've done extensive speed testing on my iPhone 4 due to antenna issues. I live approx 1500ft from an AT&T tower, and have no antenna issues in the area of my apartment. That said, at this location I have been averaging between 5-6mbps down and 1.4-1.7mbps up on iPhone 4 over the last week and a half. Now I'm getting 1.5-3mbps down and 100kbps up! What the hell? I had a couple spikes up to 202kbps for upload, but that is it. I live in a low load area on the edge of town in Springfield, MO where there aren't a bunch of 3g data users (I live here because I go to Missouri State).

What REALLY sucks is that I had been getting the 4-6mbps down since January and my uploads on 3GS were in the 300-350kbps range. One of the important reasons I got an iPhone 4 was because of the fast upload speed. Now it's 1/3 slower than my 3GS?!?

SCREW YOU AT&T! Greedy bastards.

I'm in Lafayette, IN. Its about in the middle between Chicago and Indianapolis in North Central Indiana. I've been testing my connections, but I havent been having the problems with AT&T that some people have been having here, actually, its almost as good, if not better than my Wi-Fi at home.

Welcome to the upload cap! Your experience exactly matches mine. I'm in the Quad Cities (IL/IA) and I've *never* had any issues with 3G performance here. Same exact experience though... before July 2nd, I was getting 3-5 mbps down and 1.6 up. Now I'm getting around 2-2.5 mbps down and less than 100 kbps up.... which, as you noted, is *slower* than my 3GS was getting before I upgraded!

My trouble with our 3G data started sometime 7/1 - at points it was non-existent. This applies to our two iPhone 4's and an iPad. Our speed tests show 1.5-2MB download and 60K-90K upload. This applies in a 'weak' area and one where we are close to a known AT&T tower.

Immediately after the launch and up to 7/1 - speeds were both very good.

It's the same at home - even though we are using a 3G microcell.

Personally I think AT&T is having issues of some sort and will clear them up. IMO, there is much more data being downloaded then uploaded. If true, I would think they would throttle downloads first.

Location: Northern VA - Chantilly - Fairfax area.

In Los Angeles, California on a 3G Micro-cell with Wi-Fi turned off and I'm getting a mere 1.3Mb down, and 54k up. WTF? I'm literally less then 5ft away from my Micro-cell right now.

With Wi-Fi I get 8.1Mb down, and 626k up.

Same story in Baltimore MD...
On 7/1 I had a solid 1mb of upload... and for the past few days, it's been capped to 95kb...

No problems north of Boston (albeit in a non-HSUPA cell), I'm getting 300K or so upload.

same problems in Delaware, outside Philly

Wilmington, DE here, about 20 miles or so south of Philadelphia. Same crap, started about a week ago. Couldn't really connect to the internet over 3G at all. Replaced phone, called AT&T about 6 times or so, swapped out SIM, restored, the phone. Nothing is working. I can connect to the internet now, but my download and upload are only a fraction of what they once were. I am PISSED.

If this doesn't resolve itself, this is probably enough to push me away from AT&T. ETF or not. I've got the money. I'm pretty sure I was one of the last holdouts as AT&T has been fine where I live, work, play, and visit family.

I first noticed this yesterday in Kansas City, when I was trying to email some photos of the family during 4th celebrations. It took forever! I had tested photo uploading before and it was so fast with the new hardware. Now it crawls along at near dial-up speed. Way to go, AT&T! Worthless...the whole company. Apple needs to get on top of this right away.

I think people are over reacting this is not a cap. a week ago i was getting between 1.2 and 1.5 up and between 1.2 and 2.5 down on average. im in los angeles. but today my down speeds are between 250-1.2 and my up speeds average 500-600. I think there is a network issue

I think the boygenius link refers to the antenna issue and not this. This is def not just an iPhone 4 issue...

No, the Boy Genius Report link specifically states that they're not referring to the antenna issues, that they are reporting an entirely new issue - one of extremely slow data (even if the phone is lying on a table, untouched).

is there a clause in our contract that adresses 3g performance? surely ATT can't change the network performance without breaking some sort of clause right?

I was just looking through this to see if they could ever change all the unlimited contracts over to 2gbs. It looked like they could adjust bandwidth like this without any notice and without offering you the opportunity to cancel the contract.

I went to the AT&T store today, had some account maintenance to take care of. While there I mentioned the observed upload speeds and showed the AT&T rep my speedtest results. He denied any explicit upload cap but went on to say that "all networks do this sort of thing". He then passed on thus nugget of wisdom: that my upload speeds "will be much faster over Wifi".

FFS.

If a few speed tests can bring down the system, AT&T has an even bigger problem. :)

I don't disagree with that, but during normal usage the typical iPhone probably uses very little in terms of upload bandwidth.

With the advent of the iPhone 4 and the awesome upload speeds, people have been running a lot of speed tests, which I believe has provided AT&T with some very warped data. One speed test might use as much upload data as a typical phone uses in a day, week or month.

So the more excited people got, the more people did it and so on. So I do think potentially all these speed tests have significantly skewed AT&T's data on upload usage and thus caused them to implement a lower cap.

With all due respect, the Boy Genius report is absolutely talking about a different issue. It speaks of intermittent 3g connectivity issues that vary from one test to the next. It also speaks of a 3gs next to a 4 without experiencing the same issues. That is absolutely NOT what is happening here. This is problem affecting (most likely) all phones (certainly all iPhones- i tested) and it seems to be on a city by city basis.

Just for fun I ran a dslreports speediest to the Dallas server from a Denver suburb.
